I used Rails in 2009~2010 and was not a fan, even compared to boring Java with Spring. I muted DHH long ago because he's been insufferable even before his anti-woke cabal. His keynote is incredibly rude towards his own community, but also extremely funny. I'll take the win. 🙂

Checking out Grokipedia on RCS since I know a thing or two about the topic: > ... carriers like those using Google Jibe hubs routinely inspecting decrypted payloads to enforce policies, as confirmed in deployment analyses where TLS alone proved insufficient against endpoint access by providers.

Claiming that telcos routinely inspect decrypted TLS to Google infrastructure is quite the insane claim! And the weirdest part, it references a Reddit thread where people explain precisely the opposite.

Now the sad part, Wikipedia's article is pretty bad too. Lots of confusion due to the terrible job done the press, not trying to really understand what Google did with/to RCS.

By 2050 I hope we'd have collectively moved to Zstandard. 😔

It’s 2050 and a teen girl is torrenting a .tar.gz file of all the consciousnesses of all the tech bros who uploaded themselves into the cloud in a bid for immortality and modding them into The Sims 4

@quarkus.io afaik you're the biggest project encouraging the use of Jib. Google has just abandoned Kaniko and is doing less than the bare minimum maintaining Jib, with bugs and PRs left untouched for more than a year. A fork governed by people who care about community contributions would be nice.

I never understood the stance "the issue isn't Jira but how it's configured". If a tool enables and encourages such bad practices, it's definitely at fault.

What would your reaction be to this question: "Anyone else having a hard time getting their most senior engineers to consistently use JIRA? The most enthusiastic adopters on our team are PMs and me (the founder / CEO)" Is your reaction different if we substitute JIRA with AI?

I had a little USD balance at my Swiss broker and I thought I could outsmart IBKR doing an ACH transfer instead of playing the SWIFT fees roulette, but they returned the funds and it cost me $25 in fees. 😔 It must come from a US bank and they really check. 😅

I sent them to my Wise account and $30 disappeared on the way plus $6.11 taken by Wise on reception. 🤔 I guess I shouldn't bother with ACH in the future, I don't remember losing anywhere close to that to intermediary banks via SWIFT.

To add insult to the YAML brain injury, the fact some tools specifically expect .yml or .yaml instead of working with either extension is infuriating. 🫠

Xavier Niel calling Musk an asshole is another episode of "the worst people you know are all fighting" but for people who don't know French billionaires, at least Niel is genuinely funny when roasting people on Twitter.

There's probably a lesson in Silo where the IT department enables self-preservation and authoritarian power, while holding critical knowledge and employing the people who can figure it out and topple the system. 🤔

MAGAts realizing Elon is gonna eat their face is extremely funny but let me share a personal anecdote. Some have asked "why aren't there more European H-1Bs"? I'm unsure it's true in proportion, and remember that Europeans can get a green card within 2/3 years while Indians need a multiple of that.

Here I have several coworkers that went through IT apprenticeships, then figured they wanted to do more and eventually got a BSc or even an MSc.

But there's still plenty of work for IT technicians that never got a university degree. And I don't believe they're the ones most threatened by immigration and foreign workers, even though it's a hot topic in Switzerland too.

There's a more interesting question though, why do so many H-1Bs go to "mid-skilled" positions at WITCH type consultancies? It seems to be a simple game of numbers for these companies, they apply for N visas and know they'll receive one third, it's the cost of doing business.

I never liked the narrative "there are many unemployed American STEM grads". STEM is a meaningless category, a chemical engineer can't and won't do menial IT work. Why doesn't the US realize that the very existence of these IT consultancies means there's an unfulfilled demand?

Secondly, while the entire European market has traditionally been smaller than that of the Bay Area alone, if you are willing to apply at big tech companies in multiple cities/countries, there are interesting opportunities.

You probably will enjoy less disposable income, but there are nice tradeoffs. This also gives you the opportunity for an internal transfer on a L-1 visa later on, even though I assume many big tech companies don't encourage that anymore.

The company is a late-stage startup in Utah, big Scala shop, at least at the time. Unfortunately the offer isn't competitive enough compared to Switzerland, that's fair, they're in Utah for a reason I guess. So I decided not to waste their time with an unlikely H-1B application.

So, why aren't there more European H-1Bs? The main reason is that if you've graduated from a good European school, you likely won't be willing to enrol in a "pay to play" Master's that would only serve as a springboard from the F-1 OPT work permit to H-1B.

Admittedly I was a bit new to the LeetCode game but overall I did fairly well. However I ended up being turned down several times past the final round or even by hiring committees. The H-1B lottery meant that trying to hire me was not worth the effort.

Fast-forward a few years, I'm back in Switzerland and looking for a new job. Without trying too hard this time, I apply for 2 openings in the US. One cuts things short once they realise immigration will be an issue. The other agrees to make me go through the full round, and extend an offer.

I'm exactly in the demographics where Trump wants more immigrants from: www.theguardian.com/us-news/2024... I went to a top school and by almost complete luck I then got hired by the biggest consumer electronics company in the world without even really trying, where I worked 5 years.

theguardian.comTrump bemoans lack of immigrants from majority-white countries to the USEx-president avoided past ‘shithole countries’ racist invective, but said the US hadn’t gotten enough immigrants from ‘nice countries’

Even though Samsung isn't exactly top-tier if you care about software, my résumé was enough to get a really high response rate when cold applying to proper tech companies in 2014/2015.
