Hello from Help & Kindness. We work alongside people, groups and services across Dorset to help people find support, build stronger connections and make better use of what communities already have. We share what we are learning—and learn from others doing the same.

Today I had the joy of joining our Children's Service colleagues and wider Strategic Alliance for babies, children and families in Dorset. I was entrusted with hosting a panel discussion with people representing our community voices. It was a huge responsibility - heroes that I look up to >

> that I rely on for good sense and solidarity - and just hoping I could create a space where they could share their concerns, values, and hope. And they spoke. And people heard and were moved and inspired. And I was cheering and crying inside.

... Everything happens in the space between the words I think. We just don't always notice it. When we're rattling along within the noise (including the chatter in our heads) we forget that the words are often just a way to reflect deeper unspoken change and processes which are often unexpressable.

Brigid Russell@brigidrussell51.bsky.social

What happens in the spaces between the words, in moments of what may sound like silence, is actually full of sense-making and meaning and collective pause for breath. How very much I need and appreciate those spaces for listening, and connecting, and being. Still.

This mediating and reassuring role is so vital for our communities. We hear again and again from people who are overwhelmed, confused, and often frightened about things that are digital, including things online. Wrapping access to services inside a trusted provider can be the key to digital equity.

For us, a referral is only the start. In Dorset, we recognise that people may still need a trusted person, time and encouragement to make the first connection. The practical question is not simply “was someone signposted?” but “were they able to take up the offer?” And it always takes time.

Once again we heard today that communication, local relationships and lived experience are crucial. People want to see a difference from the contributions and feedback they give on services, to build real #LivingIntelligence that drives real improvements. What helps this in your view?

Individual Service Funds (ISFs) can be transformational for people who draw on care and support. However, they are not widely available, and the way they are delivered can vary greatly. TLAP has published a report to support local authorities to develop an offer around ISFs. Download it now.

We're just beginning a quiet, small, and gentle project in Dorset listening to people who are ageing without children. One of the experiences that has been shared is feeling left behind because of a lack of intergenerational contact and becoming out of touch with current things and culture >

We are beginning a small, quiet, and gentle project to listen to the voices of people who are ageing without children in Dorset. One of the many different experiences we're hearing is how lack intergenerational contact leads to feeling left behind and losing touch with language and popular culture.>

Being able to check out the meaning of phrases on the news, things people are talking about on TV and in the press, hearing about new tech or physical things that change, and learning understanding what new terms mean and what social trends are emerging all contribute to feeling connected.

There is such quiet power for change in what you describe and what you do in this generous education. The nurturing of the trees is match by your nurturing of people and places.

The Orchard Project@theorchardproject.bsky.social

Training people to care for #communityorchards and #forestgardens is a vital part of our work, as the ripple effects of this extend far wider than we can ever imagine. Here's just a few images from our work across the UK over the past few months!

We believe communities are full of knowledge, relationships and practical capacity. Our role is to help make more of that visible and connected—so people can find help, give help and work together. Follow for field notes, useful evidence and honest conversations about place-based change.

Everyday communication, local relationships, and lived experience are crucial. Support is often seen as a collection of separate services, while trusted community organisations see the whole picture. We're interested in what helps places turn knowledge into relationships and action.

What would a bold policy offer look like that supported communities to be connected, confident and in-control? What if we acknowledged community spaces, organisations, groups and activities are essential? These are questions we have been asking at @jrf-uk.bsky.social

Every pound of public money we spend has two jobs: It buys a service, but it also creates social, economic and environmental value. That’s what our Head of Scotland Naomi Mason told the Scottish Government’s Public Service Reform Committee earlier today.
