If you’re wondering why I haven’t posted about a current issue consider that I’ve been too consumed with thinking about it to start to form words about it.

Second this heartily! Particularly fascinating to hear Greene discuss the final title card from his particular perspective as a documentarian. Not sure I agree with him on that, but it’s very thought provoking!

Darren Hughes@longpauses.bsky.social

Nicolas Rapold's conversation with Robert Greene is the You Can See Me discourse you're looking for. Near the end Greene compares it with Twin Peaks: Fielder/Cooper, the naive lovelorn investigator, attempting to save Liz/Laura, the unknowable beauty. Or maybe all movies are just remakes of Vertigo.

Stories like this shouldn’t even be surprising. But they are. We used to give people more credit.

Last night I gave a lecture on La Jetee to a prison classroom and basically everyone in the class loved the movie. People who try to tell you that difficult or experimental art is only for educated nerds are wrong, that’s just shit that giant corporations want you to believe.

Not much of a Trekkee but always thought he was great when I dipped in, and was tickled to learn we shared the same college alma mater. R.I.P.

Jesse Thorn@jessethorn.bsky.social

My pal Danielle Koenig shared that her father Walter Koenig passed away last night at age 90. A performer whose kindness and warmth shone through the screen. He will be well remembered.

Lots of great options in this poster contest but I particularly enjoyed playing spot-the-auteur in this one, even though I got totally stumped by this stubble-faced guy who looked remarkably like Bill Pullman.

I love a good quest, and this one is right up my Murnau-fan alley.

🏳️‍🌈 Ms. Marya E. Gates 🦩@oldfilmsflicker.bsky.social

With the release of "The Faust Bible," this Silent Sunday I have continued my investigation into the height of the great F.W. Murnau and whether or not he was, in fact, a giant. Read: oldfilmsflicker.substack.com/p/was-fw-mur...

I’m proud to say that I was able to watch YOU CAN SEE EVERYTHING last night in a packed cinema without having had anything spoiled for me. Thanks to everyone in my feed for helping facilitate this (intentionally or not.)

Wish this wasn’t a school night- otherwise I’d be pretty tempted to drive down to see DREAMS MONEY CAN BUY in 16mm again. Amazing film!

The 5 Best Films of Every Year Ever: 1915 ends next week! Do you have five (or any) favorites from the year? Submit them at www.the5bestfilmsofeveryyearever.com/list or reply here by Monday 10/26 to be included in the season’s final list. Please share around, we’re getting more and more each year!

Don’t know the real one for certain. My dad took me to STAR WARS at the Coronet in Fall 1977 & my mom took me to SNOW WHITE & THE SEVEN DWARFS at (she thinks) the Stonestown, but the Chronicle archive movie listings indicate it played there when I was younger than she says she’d have taken me to it.

Mark Thompson@markreckons.bsky.social

First film you saw at the cinema. The real first one, not the pretend one you tell people! Mine: The Empire Strikes Back, 1980, Wigan. We were near the front and I can still remember how massive the AT-ATs looked, looming over us out of the snow :) Film, year, where, and whatever stuck with you.

Same company releasing Blu-Rays of the first and only Academy Award-winner for Unique and Artistic Picture and the film Louis B. Meyer engineered it to beat, both before the end of the current Oscar Season™, is pretty exciting!

Flicker Alley@flicker-alley.bsky.social

The definitive edition of F.W. Murnau's SUNRISE, restored by @sffilmpreserve.bsky.social is coming to 4K UHD and Blu-ray Disc in early 2027!

I happen to know of a college library with zero Kubrick movies on Blu-Ray and no budget to purchase any either.

Liam Billingham@liamgbillingham.bsky.social

If you picked up the Kubrick box set today, donate your old Kubricks to libraries, video stores, whatever. Make it so that a 14-year-old can find it and blow their mind.

Great news for San Francisco music fans- this is where I saw Merzbow, Wesley Willis, Evangelista…

The most unhinged Tod Browing-Lon Chaney movie?

The first World Cinema Project set entirely made of films I have never seen. (Though I’ve seen another Flora Gomes film, the delightful MY VOICE, so I’m particularly intrigued by MORTU NEGA.)

***ANNOUNCEMENT*** Coming on January 19th on Blu-ray in the US from @criterion.bsky.social: #MartinScorsese's #WorldCinemaProject No. 6! Established by Martin Scorsese in 2007, The Film Foundation’s World Cinema Project has maintained a fierce commitment to preserving and presenting masterpieces

THE NIGHTINGALE is one of the harshest movies I’ve ever seen in a film festival setting. Interested to check out the other four! Here’s my last four, sorta. (They’re slightly misordered, and there’s a non-spooky cartoon I haven’t logged yet that would displace one of them if I had)

Ariel 아리엘@archivistariel.bsky.social

I guess this is kinda a reveal on my series for this month but whatever. If you don’t wanna read my thoughts on these films, don’t hahahah. They’re all fucking brilliant. Big TW on The Nightingale tho #lastfourwatched #letterboxdfriday #filmsky

Keep hoping someone’s gonna pick my favorite Cecil B. DeMille film from 1915: THE GOLDEN CHANCE, which was filmed at the same time as THE CHEAT and is (IMHO) superior in every way but one (no Sessue Hayakawa performance). Not this week! still a great listen though.

Is there a work of art that was created well before the current era that you feel explains Trump and MAGA and everything better than anything contemporary? For me it’s Assassins (1990) but I’m curious if other people have one.

R.I.P. Eva Marie Saint. Unmentioned in this little piece about the Paramount Theatre, where I saw NORTH BY NORTHWEST twice, is the fact that the second showing in 2008 was preceded by the recitation of a message of appreciation from the star to the audience who had gathered to see her signature film

Brian Darr@hellonfriscobay.bsky.social

What a cartoon. Other Letterboxd reviewers have covered a lot of the bases on why it's so special (check my 'liked" reviews at the page bottom) so I wrote a few paragraphs about why my last encounter with it was so special (hint: the venue was and is the most glorious movie palace I've attended).

Two faves are RAW DEAL & SILVER LODE, both of which I’ve nominated to the National Film Registry in hopes that a film that Alton was the main cinematographer on could finally be inducted. (His only Registry film credit is “Additional Photography” on AN AMERICAN IN PARIS, where Alfred Gilks was D.P.)
