lately, i have been having an odd feeling. i am a third generation atheist. i was raised with no faith, and also no feelings about faith. it’s just sort of a blank space for me. but as i’ve been watching what’s happened in minnesota, i’ve had this stirring feeling: we are going to heaven.

Some deaths become symbols almost immediately. Others barely register. That’s true in Minneapolis — and it’s true globally, from Gaza to Iran to Sudan. That disparity isn’t random, and it’s worth naming.

But Western policies still shape the terrain — sanctions, debt regimes, alliances, arms — in ways that intensify collapse and repression. Distance makes that influence harder to see. It's how responsibility gets laundered — it shapes how solidarity looks and how urgency is felt in the US.

Across Minneapolis, Gaza, Iran, and Sudan, racial hierarchy shapes visibility; proximity, responsibility, and leverage shape urgency. Structural violence persists because distance, complexity, and deniability allow powerful institutions to perpetrate harm invisibly and without accountability.

It’s why Gaza hits differently than Iran or Sudan. The U.S. funds Israel’s military, supplies weapons, provides diplomatic cover, and blocks accountability. This creates implication for US citizens, not just horror — outrage is immediate once that culpability is clear.

Iran and Sudan show the harder case. In Iran, the state killing thousands of protesters is a mass atrocity. In Sudan, hundreds of thousands have been killed and millions displaced in a war most Americans barely register. The violence is enacted primarily by internal actors, not outsiders.

In Minneapolis, Alex Pretti and Renée Good were elevated as symbols — mobilizing people fast. But Keith Porter Jr, Silverio Villegas González, Isaias Sanchez Barboza, and people who died in ICE detention haven’t become symbols the same way. That disparity reflects race, citizenship, and “innocence.”

Zooming out, the same pattern shows up internationally. Americans often react more intensely to white Americans killed by the state than to people killed by American power abroad. That's racial hierarchy — it's racism. But proximity and responsibility shape urgency too.

At least, that's all you can do until you find out Billy Bragg has a new song out, then you can put THAT on and get the fuck to work. youtu.be/IKOW2ZikGW8

He also reverses the Occupy–Arab Spring timeline. Adbusters explicitly framed what they were starting as a “Tahrir moment.” Flipping the sequence isn’t a small error—it recenters the West as the engine of revolt instead of acknowledging where the shock actually began.

I was in the West Bank during the Arab Spring, then back in the US for Occupy. It felt like a tsunami moving west: upheaval there, echoes here. Imagining the current flowed the other way is pure Eurocentric fantasy.

My main criticism is that while Palestine is mentioned, its central role in West Asian politics isn’t emphasized enough—possibly reflecting BBC influence. Still, it’s worth watching contrapuntally, in Said’s sense, attending to what’s said explicitly and to what’s assumed but left unnamed.

Curtis treats Palestine as incidental, framing West Asian conflict as a pathology of leaders (Assad) rather than conditions. He critiques Western demonization of Saddam, then repeats the move with Assad—projecting on his personality rather than recognizing the Nakba as is a cause in itself.

Stop saying ICE killed 2 people. ICE has killed at least 4 by force, 36+ in custody, and deported 600,000+—many asylum seekers sent back to life-threatening conditions. The real death toll is unknown, but it’s far higher than 2.

Speaking of Said’s contrapuntal lens, Andor is fascinating. Why is Disney comfortable bringing viewers so close to interpellation toward armed resistance? What’s missing? Is power now so secure that aestheticizing the activation of resistance is harmless?

“Only hours have passed since they shot a man right in front me and I don't feel like I can go home because I heard agents were looking for me. I don't know what the agents will do when they find me.”

You have to read this. Firsthand affidavit from one of the women who was there and recording the video. She talks about how Alex Pretti was directing traffic when she arrived. She watched him be killed in front of her. She's afraid to go home, worried she'll be arrested.

They're going to keep shooting nurses and poets, parents and neighbors dead in the streets, and every single time they do it they will concoct a lie to justify what they've done. The fact that people know this, and still stand up to them, scares them absolutely shitless.

ICE can't win against this. They are weak and scared and confused and have only gotten as far as they have because they lived in a propaganda fantasy. The real world is much colder, and much more full of brave, decent people than they could have imagined. They know they're losing.

Today is #ICEout day in MN with high temps reaching -11°F & masses are protesting at MSP Airport while hundreds are outside the Whipple Fed Building. On one side a blockade prevents ICE vehicles from driving thru while ice balls are thrown at vehicles on the other side. At least 2 arrests so far.

This country is becoming unrecognizable. What we’re seeing is state-funded fear. We’ve warned people: keep filming, go live on social media so these moments are documented and shared. This wasn’t a case involving masked ICE agents—but that’s happening too.
