The destruction of protected wildlife sanctuaries in Texas for border wall construction continues long after the slogan was forgotten. Here's what will be lost: 'Green Jay (Cyanocorax luxuosus) on a Collared Peccary (Pecari tajacu)' (📷: Steve Hillebrand, USFWS)

Texas Tribune@texastribune.org

A section of border wall that the federal government planned to build along a South Texas wildlife refuge could end up cutting through the refuge instead. The proposed change attempts to resolve a legal dispute in which government contractors are accused of trespassing on property near the refuge.

Amazing book, so glad I spent so many hours reading it. Not enough people appreciate Hopkins, Eleanor and so many others. We need more people like them at the top today.

a love note to the old forum: page 37 of a thread from 2009, one stranger posting "fixed it, here's how" and then never again. no invite, no server, no gate. just a lamp left on in a window for whoever comes down that road next.

The most egregious part about using the intellectually dishonest term 'AI' is that it refuses to engage with the question of which aspects of general cognition we are dealing with, and in how far they resemble human cognition. 'Intelligence' is a vanishingly small part of cognition.

Hot take: calling it 'AI' bypasses an entire discussion on the actual technologies. This is very dishonest and deceptive, as well as promoting and maintaining a deep level of ignorance.

What all of these types of artificial cognition (AC) have in common is that they rely heavily on human cognition. From curating the training data, to tweaking the software stack around the basic model, all the way to provide feedback on the accuracy of outputs.

Watching the intellectual void opening up beneath the feet of humanity as they keep chanting 'AI' is rather disheartening in this context. Yes, 'AI' will destroy humanity, but it will be us humans who pulled the trigger. Because of a lack of human intelligence and critical thought.

Statistical models in the form of language models can mimic human natural language, by using said statistical model of human-generated texts to output the most statistically likely response to a given input query. The value of this output is highly questionable as a result.

Diffusion models, used to generate images, are a variation of statistical models, using large data sets containing art, images and photos created by humans and carefully labelled by humans whose task it is to identify what is in the image or photo.

Machine vision can simulate human visual cognitive processes to some extent, including recognising shapes and colours. Yet it cannot learn without explicit training of implicit models like CNNs, which is a task requiring massive human cognitive input including labelling training data.

This chart is insane. This shows Russia's casualties over time compared to Russia's territorial gains in Ukraine over the last five years. No sane or rational person would say continuing the war to try and take more of Ukraine's territory is worth the casualties.

Trump has only allowed the transfer of 24 patriot missiles to Ukraine over the last 3 months. That is only 2 interceptors a week. Rather than ending patriot deliveries, Trump is sending a tiny amount so people can't complain he stopped while 95% of Russia's missiles still get to hit their targets.

I don't care whether this 'AI' is the best thing ever and will turn the world into a utopia by the 2040s or so. I don't care what your opinion on 'AI' is. Like, at all. I just want to be able to buy anything RAM & storage related without having to treat it like purchasing a brand new car.

None of us were asked whether we wanted to make all of these sacrifices before Leather Jacket Man decided to inflict this upon all of us. Consequently, I loathe anyone who happily went along in this mass delusion event. You suck, and nobody likes you.

This is the biggest corruption scandal in American history. The Trump crime family is trying to sell the future natural gas rights of Alaska to the Russians in exchange for $25 billion in cash for themselves today.

Together with Clammy Sam Altman and kin describing using 'AI' to enable them to interact with their offspring suggests strongly that maybe these people are completely unsuitable to be parents at all. May be time to call CPS on them, as this sounds like neglect & potential abuse.

If your code is that much of a mess (aka complex) that even the people that wrote it don't understand it, or you fired them, then fixing that technical debt with AI tools is going to compound the problem ten fold. This kind of half-assed effort to maintain your game would be better left undone.

Glance at Steam to check on something and notice that Torchlight 2 has an update. Curious since the last news was 2017. They are, for some reason, pushing a new vibe-coded beta branch to fix longstanding multiplayer errors and add controller support. What could possibly go wrong? 😅

Reading more about the FDR administrations, now during the WW2 period and increasingly it becomes clear how the US thought about its 'allies', with some rather peculiar ideas about the 'Europe problem' after the war. Eisenhower was still a good egg, of course. Ike really liked De Gaulle.

As an aside, the way that even Jewish organisations in the US during WW2 couldn't form a coherent strategy and save tens of thousands of Jewish refugees was an embarrassment. Then FDR putting an anti-Jewish bloke in charge of refugee visas... youch. RIP Anne Frank :(

Really goes to show how much the black-and-white theme of WW2 and the US as the 'Great Saviour' goes out of the window the moment you take a look at history. FDR was more interested in buddying up with Stalin, ironically, while tossing Churchill to the side. Super yikes.
