Day 27: Dumb This highly intelligent-looking blob is the Indian Purple Frog. The translation of its scientific name (Nasikabatrachus) is “nose frog”. Native to India, the frog’s call is described as similar to a chicken clucking! #inktober #inktober2026 #inktober2026dumb #illustration #animalart

Day 23: Dapper “Conformity is the last refuge of the unimaginitive” ~ Oscar Wilde Oscar Wilde, known not only for his stories, but also for his dandyism and pursuit of beauty. #inktober #inkober2026 #inktober2026dapper #illustration #portrait #oscarwilde #ink #dandy #dapper

“A.I. makes art accessible.” Art has always been accessible. There was like a six month period where I drew all the sketches for my comics with a lined notebook from the grocery store and a random green marker.

Day 8: Stinky - Corpse Flower (Amorphophallus titanum) The corpse flower blooms every 3 to 7 years with its main body (the spadix) growing over 3 meters high! The stench, described as rotting meat, can be smelled up to 800 meters away and attracts carrion insects for pollination.

Day 4: Cactus Depicted here is a cactus coreid nymph, also commonly known as the cactus bug. They live and feed on prickly pears. (Reference used by photographer Phil Clark) #inktober #inktober2026 #illustration #bookart #insect

Day 2: Relic My reference was a grave a found in the midst of London. It was so calm in the graveyard only a few meters from the bustling streets. The ground was carpeted with white flowers, birds sang and squirrels were scampering about. #inktober #inktober2026 #illustration #sketch #bookart

Added more paintings to my van! This blue fella is a pūkeko, a bird found throughout New Zealand. Their striking colours still have me yell “pūkeko!” when driving past a group- and I see them almost every single day! #birdart #vanlife #van #mural #illustration #painting #illustrator #newzealand

Happy #kidlitartpostcard day! My name is Merle Grimm. I love illustrating facial expressions and bringing character-driven plots to life, especially if adventure is involved! I’d love to collaborate with you on your next project. #bookart #bookillustrator #kidlit #kidlitart

Cover art for one of my all time favourite books - “the Golden Compass” or “Northern Lights” by Philip Pullman. Did you spot Oxford’s skyline in the bear’s silhouette? And my first sketches, where I was figuring out the composition. #bookart #kidlitart #coverart #childrensbook #illustration

I illustrated the scene about a year ago, but wasn’t happy with the finished product. I’ve gone back and am so pleased that I did. It’s satisfying comparing the old and the new and seeing how one has sharpened one’s tools! Do you ever go back to your old art and feel the need to redo it?

Today I’m sharing an experiment. Spring has finally arrived in New Zealand. Last week I spotted a Tui bird in a cherry tree. I sketched the Tui, scanned the sketch and digitally added colours to all the white areas. I think it looks a bit like a print. What do you think?
