Rumour has it that Bristol must maintain its current level of roadworks because if all the cones were returned to the ETM depot at once they’d be enough concentrated mass to form a back hole.

70 percent of the internet was vulnerable yesterday to very bad security flaws inside a coding language. Turns out, *one volunteer* is mostly responsible for maintaining that code & helping push updates. Yesterday Ondřej Surý saved the internet. So I called him up www.theatlantic.com/technology/2...

theatlantic.comThe Man Who Saved the Internet YesterdayOndřej Surý was a relatively anonymous volunteer working on PHP security. Then the internet exploded.

Nowadays, the internet sometimes feels like a once well-to-do neighbourhood that became a slum after an industrial park & motorway were built through it. And I'm the lifelong resident who refuses to leave, unable to accept that the decaying, now unsafe area will never regain its former grandeur.

Signing up to the next service I see that advertises itself as not asking for fucking feedback after every customer microtransaction. (If you've enjoyed this post, please rate my performance on a scale of 1-5. Further surveys may follow. Past performance is not an indicator of future returns.)

Bought a vintage stereoscope image of the (second, 1816-1867) #Hotwells spa building in #Bristol. Sadly I can't virtually share my (Brian-May-designed!) stereoscope viewer. If you have red/cyan 3D glasses, the third image might give some idea of what I'm seeing... #history

A productive evening. Thanks to the Bristol Hackspace laser cutter and FreeCAD I now have a custom-size IKEA-SKÅDIS-compatible pegboard for the wall beside my desk...

The SQL Server datetime type stores dates starting from 1 Jan 1753. Not un-coincidentally, Britain and her colonies transitioned to the Gregorian calendar in 1752. I’d say this happened exactly 274 years ago, but it’s hard to be precise…

…because 4 September 1752 didn’t exist. We skipped from 2 to 14 Sep overnight, Julian to Gregorian. Which might well explain why someone at Sybase looked at that whole mess and decided to draw their line above it. #sqlserver

This is one of many reasons I remain living in a little flat in Hotwells: the things you happen to see when you pop out for a coffee. #Bristol

For Christ's sake, The Guardian. I've *got* a perfectly decent password. Why do you need to email me a code to log in? What's this extra protection *for*? Is someone going to hack me and leave a right-wing comment under my name or something?

Today I used a domestic degreaser to clean the front of my Bosch oven. And wiped off the symbols and numerals from around the main control and temperature knobs. Luckily I can remember where "180°C" was, and how to turn the oven on. Next time I want to grill something it's roulette time...

My friend (and Coffee Club barista) Mabel went above and beyond normal latte art today after a conversation about music. #moomins #snufkin #harmonica

sometimes I look at sofas that don't have proper armrests and it brings me, with deep horror, into the lives of people who apparently never lie down across their sofa and instead just sit on them (?) like circus freaks

Starting to feel like the best sci-fi property to understand the rise of machine intelligence might be Blade Runner, a story about two co-dependent species trapped in an endless dyad of making things just a little bit worse.

When I bought a £130 folding exercise bike from Amazon a few years back I really wasn't expecting to get this far. I mean, however far 999.9km actually *is* on a stationary bike...
