Also, I should mention there were some very weird circumstances in the review process for this game…

My review of Phantom Blade Zero for Eurogamer is up! Some highly impressive combat here, and really beautiful world design. Yet balance & quality issues in the build I played let it down somewhat. www.eurogamer.net/phantom-blad...

At that stage it’s impossible to replay the whole game to see if the patch has altered the overall experience. I went back to old save files to check if problem bosses still felt the same, and for the most part they did, so I feel my criticisms still stand. But yeah, really not ideal!

They’re patching it *again* - 49.4GB this time. No idea what’s in this one but it could end up feeling very different from the build everyone reviewed

If you’re wondering how it is for women reviewers out here, I’ve started getting emails telling me to kill myself for… a largely positive review

Alan and I very much on the same wavelength here, it seems

Been playing Phantom Blade Zero and there is lots to love here with its strong unique kungfupunk art direction and setting, but also just as many frustrating design choices and shortcomings that keep it from greatness www.creativebloq.com/reviews/phan...

Games that put out a day 1 patch that fixes the issues pointed out in reviews sure is becoming a thing, though having that happen as you’re writing the review feels new.

Firstly, S-Game asked reviewers not to discuss a huge chunk of the narrative, to the degree we couldn’t even discuss the prologue cutscene. This meant I couldn’t fully praise some of the cool storytelling methods used later in the game - a huge shame!

Secondly, two days before the review embargo lifted, S-Game rolled out a big patch which aimed to fix various performance issues plus the difficulty curve - including stats of enemies, bosses, weapons and abilities.

Once again getting that weird sensation of ‘wait, I’ve been here before’ seeing all those in-game locations and hearing the ringtone

It’s interesting that companies always seem to know exactly what employees want, or would find useful, when designing their fake phishing emails

this is fucking appalling. i already knew james dolan (who owns the knicks and madison square garden) was a douche but this is next-level. www.nytimes.com/athletic/771...

I’ve seen one company send an internal fake phishing email promising free flu jabs for employees. Haha, imagine giving that away for free! Don’t be silly!

Bioware was a pillar in so many devs’ journeys, including my own. Mass Effect and Dragon Age were integral to me. I’d never seen stories written this way and I’ve been chasing those highs ever since. What an incredible loss for games and storytelling. Truly.

BREAKING: Electronic Arts is cutting 400 jobs and shutting down BioWare, the legendary development studio behind Dragon Age and Mass Effect. www.bloomberg.com/news/article...

This is a rogue pick but I friggin loved SWTOR when I was younger. I got super invested in all the Sith power struggles and internal political drama. Probably the most motivated I have ever been to grind through an MMO

Let's honour BioWare's legacy: what's your favourite BioWare game of all time? (And why is it Mass Effect 2?)

Like the main appeal was that it could be used for very quick simple edits, and now everything is unbelievably weird and clunky to use. Who designed this?

Ahhh it's out! I was so happy that Eteo asked me back, and I finally got to write about the game that has haunted me like no other: ECHO!

ECHO is a very underrated and cool game. Great to see some writing on it so many years after release!

Great to have @florencesn.bsky.social writing for us again, with another brilliant piece. Really interesting comparison here between the meaning (and monetary value) of the mirrors in the real-life Palace of Versailles, and the enormous sci-fi hallways seen in ECHO. Go have a read!

It's actually ludicrous how many times I've bumped into friends in random BC car parks this last month. This province is nearly 4 times bigger than the UK

Just pulled up to the bar to do some work. In front of a bunch of hockey guys, my laptop decided to do its fancy-schmancy gamer™️ light show, outing me as a big ol NERD

Staying at a hostel which has an ‘AI’ vending machine which lets you tap your card, then open up the door to take stuff out. The staff said apparently it sometimes charges people like £30 and then refunds them much later on. Anyway seems both trustworthy and necessary
