The Kyoto Protocol was gaveled in 1997. The ‘climate time’ that has passed since then — full of worlds avoided, but also opportunities missed — reminds me of song lyrics about looking back at your adolescence and recalling its dreams about all the things you’d never be. Here’s to you, Kyoto. 🍻

Dr. Evan J. Gowan@evangowan.bsky.social

I was at the Research Institute for Humanity and Nature in Kyoto this week. They have a gavel on display that was used to announce the agreement of the Kyoto Protocol. Alas, the protocol did not have enough of an impact to stop the rise of carbon emissions.

This week’s failure in Addis Ababa to agree on a timeline for the next IPCC report is disheartening to everyone pushing climate science forward.

It’s astounding this isn’t the only thing people are talking about. It shows how much power mainstream news, who are blacking out the climate element of this El Niño, still holds. #ClimateCrisis

I’m thinking of my U.S. research colleagues as their funding dries up. This isn’t just a financial crisis, it’s political decisions creating an existential moment for U.S. science. Many people are simply waiting — and hoping — this will pass, but returning to ‘the norm’ isn’t guaranteed. 🥹

David Ho@davidho.bsky.social

I don’t think everyone realizes how bad things are for US science: For the fiscal year that just ended, the Trump regime withheld $1.4 billion from the National Science Foundation’s research budget, which is about 1/5 of its primary research budget.

If you are in Kangerlussuaq next week and want to learn more about our @firnmelt.bsky.social project, please see the open house below. 👇

We are hosting an open house in Kangerlussuaq, Greenland, on Wedesday October 7th 2026. The event gives people the opportunity to meet our ice-sheet scientists and traverse vehicles, and learn a little more about the FirnMelt project. Funded by @erc.europa.eu

Stopping regulation of climate-polluting gases from U.S. power plants would be profoundly short-sighted. These emissions harm public health today, and put future generations at greater climate risk.

The New York Times@nytimes.com

Breaking News: The E.P.A. is said to be planning to announce that the U.S. will no longer limit climate pollution from power plants.

Yes, the AR7 WGI expert review period is still ongoing. 👇 Climate experts, please consider if you can help make the next IPCC assessment report as comprehensive and insightful as possible. 🤓

Yes, our review article on Petermann Glacier is even more topical with its recent calving event! Whether you consider Petermann to be an ‘ice stream’ or a ‘glacier’, might influence how you think about the stability of Northwest Greenland. 🤓

ESA Earth Observation@esaearth.esa.int

Earlier this month, a 76 sq km section of Petermann Glacier in northwest Greenland broke away. The newly formed tabular iceberg covers an area about the same size of Manhattan and is estimated to be up to 150 metres thick. This huge loss was captured by the Copernicus Sentinel-1 radar vision ⬇️

Here’s some fantastic thermal drone imagery of a thermal spring in East Greenland. Captured by Eva Nielsen earlier this month. The spring water is 53C, flowing down a rock wall behind the field team. Our HotBlink project is funded by the Independent Research Fund of Denmark.

Hey! Team FirnMelt is looking for a PhD student ⤵️

Engineering the ice sheets to limit their sea-level rise contribution is a drastic idea, but it could be on the menu in an ‘all of the above’ response to accelerating climate change. This talk from former IGS President Doug MacAyeal swayed me on the topic. ⤵️ youtu.be/E0TGF_zDtCw

Yes, American science continues to trundle headfirst into an “evolve or die” era. Thankfully, lots of bright climate folks are finding ways to move the ball forward without relying on the U.S. government. 💙✊

With so much happening in the world, it's easy to lose sight of the steady creep of climate change. But every so often, it forces its way back onto the front burner, forcing us to consider our collective climate trajectory. 👀

Holiday in the climate emergency. No that’s not AI or edited, just a snapshot I just took with my phone on Lacanau beach in France. What future will this boy grow up in? It is in our hands, but time is running out.

It would be poignant — and easy! — to make a montage of people going about their normal lives with wildfires looming in the background. Perhaps a fitting homage to our climate inaction. 🥺 ‘Golf under fire’ is almost ten years old now!

Now opening nominations for the Best Image of Climate Politics in a Nutshell 🌎

Yup. Canadian wildfires are expected to worsen in the future, as our warming climate increases their frequency and severity. This is pretty much a statement of fact. Sadly.

This post is unavailable.

Sadly, it’s no surprise that climate change is making El Niño events more ferocious. 🌊 Here’s IPCC AR6 Box 11.4 saying that extreme El Niños occur more frequently in a warming world. ⤵️ Still, the exceedance magnitude of this summer’s event beyond all previous events is eye opening. 👀

Zeke Hausfather@zekehausfather.com

With all the July model runs now in, it is very likely that 2026 will see the largest El Niño event since records began in the late 1800s – and potentially by a truly mind-blowing margin. The median estimate is now 3.6C, roughly 0.8C hotter than the prior record (2.75C). www.theclimatebrink....

Dr. Alan Grant was the first depiction of a field scientist that I ever saw. The character opened my eyes to a career studying the natural world. 🥺

My privilege to share some lovely stories from the science community about what Sam Neill's timeless performance as Dr. Alan Grant in Jurassic Park meant to them—and why it will continue to inspire kids to chase their own discoveries for years to come.

This heavy-handed policy is seeking to turn back the clock on years of international scientific collaboration. Climate change doesn’t recognize borders or geopolitics. Such global challenges demand global collaboration.

Science Magazine@science.org

NSF has decided to ban collaborations between every U.S. scientist it funds and nearly all Chinese research institutions and their employees. The new policy abandons NSF’s earlier attempt to balance the potential risks and benefits of such collaborations. https://scim.ag/4bw5Of5

Yes, Arctic wildfires are ‘new’, and sadly they form a positive feedback with climate change. Increasing wildfire activity is increasing the vulnerability of permafrost to thaw, accelerating the release of long-stored greenhouse gases. This is a feature, not a glitch, of the Anthropocene. 🔥📈🔥

These are the types of actions that determine our ‘worlds avoided’ or ‘opportunities missed’. We owe ourselves—and future generations—better. Shame on Duke Energy. #ClimateAction

The New York Times@nytimes.com

The Trump administration on Monday said it would pay Duke Energy $129 million to abandon its plans to build an offshore wind farm off North Carolina. It was the fourth such deal struck by the administration to throttle the development of offshore wind power.

…and it’s a damp heat! 🥵

And we've done it! All time Danish record of 36.4C broken with 37C. Previous June record (from 1947) beaten by a full 1.5C. Also warmest tropical night on record. Previous record was August 1975* *Not a typo for UK readers, 1975 was was warmer than 1976 in Denmark. www.dr.dk/nyheder/vejr...

Climate science seems like an abstract profession—until you're writing the next IPCC report in the middle of an extreme weather event. 🥵

Ed Hawkins@edhawkins.org

The London Ambulance Service responded to the highest number of life-threatening emergencies in its history yesterday. The Chief Executive said this was "driven by the extreme heat across London".

I have many happy memories of Athabasca Glacier, but sadly it is perhaps now a candidate for the glaciercasualtylist.rice.edu — It is very likely ‘critically endangered’ under all plausible climate scenarios.
