Eight years ago today, a white supremacist shot and killed 11 people and injured six others at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Every house of worship should be safe from gun violence, but our communities experience armed hate far too often.

Today and always, our hearts are with the victims, survivors, their loved ones, and the entire Tree of Life community as we work to build a future where these attacks no longer happen.

We can’t keep letting America’s gun violence crisis destroy and upend young lives every single day. As we wait to learn more information, we know that a homecoming celebration should never end in gunfire. Our hearts are with all those impacted and the entire FAMU community during this tragic time.

Three years ago today, a gunman killed 18 people and injured 13 others in a shooting rampage in Lewiston, Maine. Families were gathered for youth night at the local bowling alley and Maine’s deaf and hard of hearing community were gathered at a restaurant for a corn hole competition.

And last year, Mainers voted to pass a red flag law, which allows family members to petition courts to remove firearms from a loved one in danger.

These laws have been lifesaving but more must be done. Our hearts are with the victims, survivors, their families, and the entire Lewiston community as we work to build on this progress.

Mainers demanded action, and their leaders listened. State lawmakers passed a 72-hour waiting period for gun purchases and expanded background checks to help keep guns out of the wrong hands.

Kaylub Giamanco, a father of two in Bend, Oregon, did what no parent should ever have to do when he saw a gunman enter his daughters’ elementary school. Kaylub is a hero, but he shouldn’t have had to be. In the shooting’s aftermath, Kaylub shared that he is just trying to sleep at night.

“I relive, I see faces, I hear voices, I hear screams.” Three young children and their teacher were killed in front of him, and he is struggling with the fact that he couldn’t save everyone.

What our leaders willingly put our students, teachers, & parents through is sickening. No parent should ever be the last line of defense between a gunman & children. Our leaders must do more to prevent gun violence before it happens, because three children dying in their classroom is three too many.

One week ago today, three young kids were killed in a shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon. Rhoam Summer was only 5 years old, and the youngest victim to have been killed in a mass shooting at a school. His family shared that he loved rainbows, unicorns, sharks, and dinosaurs.

The other two children were 8 and 11 years old. Their names have not been publicly shared at the request of their families. They each deserved to return home from school, to be safe and protected in their classroom, and to grow up. America’s gun violence crisis stole that from them.

Our hearts are with their families and the entire Bend community as they continue to grieve this devastating loss.

He loved to cook with his parents, sing, and tell stories of creatures with big teeth who need understanding and friendships. The Summers hope that we continue to honor him by making art and getting messy with our hands.

Homicides are declining across the US, and experts agree that community violence intervention programs are key contributors to this historic decline. We must build on this progress, not pull back resources from programs that make these wins possible.

A white supremacist’s attack on a Hindu temple in Aurora, Illinois was narrowly avoided last week when his rifle jammed. He was later arrested after sharing his plans to try again with coworkers. Houses of worship should be safe spaces, but far too often they’re targeted by armed extremists.

Among those worshipping at the temple during the attempted attack were @congressmanraja.bsky.social and his family. Our hearts are with all those impacted as we stand with Rep. Krishnamoorthi in working to confront the armed hatred that put so many lives at risk.

Our hearts are with the family of Megan Lambert, who has been identified as the teacher shot and killed yesterday at Silver Rail Elementary School. Megan was only 25-years-old.

Megan also worked as a volleyball coach at Central Oregon Volleyball Club, where in her first year coaching, she turned down payment so that the money could go to families of the players who could not afford to play. She was a selfless, beloved teacher, sister, & daughter who will be deeply missed.

Our hearts are with the family of Megan Lambert, who has been identified as the teacher shot and killed yesterday at Silver Rail Elementary School. Megan was only 25-years-old.

Megan’s family shared the following: “She loved Silver Rail. This was her dream job. She always fought for the underdog and those with special needs… We would like the other families to know they are in our thoughts and prayers. Megan loved those children, and so we will show you love for her."

Police have shared that three children, ages 5, 8 and 11, and one teacher were fatally shot at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon. A 7-year-old was also injured. America's gun violence crisis is killing our babies. Enough is enough.

Eight people were senselessly killed in a horrific act of gun and domestic violence in Erie, Pennsylvania on Friday when a man shot his wife, their three children, and two young grandchildren. An aunt and friend of the family were also killed in the attack.

Our leaders must act—for Michelle, Jonathan, Matthew, Twila, Lora, Angelina, Isiah, and Amari’anna. Our hearts are with their loved ones and the entire Erie community as we fight to honor their lives and build the safer future they deserved.

Police have shared that among the eight people shot and killed at a home in Erie, Pennsylvania yesterday were a 5-year-old boy, a nearly 2-year-old girl, and a woman who was 8 months pregnant. Seven of the victims were family and one was a family friend.

We can’t keep letting our families live and die this way. Our lawmakers must take action NOW.

Two young children should be growing up today. Instead, their lives were stolen in a horrific mass shooting in Erie, PA that left eight people dead. Our hearts are with their family now facing unimaginable grief. This endless violence must stop. www.nbcphiladelphia.com/news/local/9...

Latino communities are under attack—from the Trump admin’s cruel immigration policies to our country’s gun violence crisis. It’s time to fight for a safer future. This Hispanic Heritage Month, we’re partnering with @votolatino.bsky.social for a conversation on how to keep Latino communities safe.

Yesterday, a man was shot in his car by ICE officers in New York City while his five-year-old son sat terrified in the back seat. No child, family, or community should ever experience this violence. We demand a full, transparent investigation.

Only in America do disagreements so often upend lives and turn deadly. Why? Because the gun lobby stokes fear and paranoia at the expense of public safety. We can’t keep living like this.

The child’s parents—one of whom is a Detroit police officer—have been charged after the incident. Michigan’s law requires guns to be secured in a locked container or unloaded with a locking device when left unattended around children, because no 3-year-old should be able to get their hands on a gun.

She understands the toll gun violence has had on communities and she’s consistently pushed back on efforts to roll back lifesaving gun safety laws, including the bipartisan gun safety measures enacted after the tragic shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland.

This Domestic Violence Awareness Month, we’re reminded just how dangerous domestic disputes are, especially when an abuser is armed with a gun. Every year, more than 700 American women are shot to death by intimate partners—roughly one every 12 hours.

It doesn’t have to be this way. Our lawmakers must commit to passing commonsense gun safety laws that will close dangerous loopholes, keep guns out of the wrong hands, and protect survivors.

Nine years ago today, a gunman armed with 13 rifles equipped with bump stocks fired over 1,000 bullets into a crowd at the Route 91 Harvest music festival in Las Vegas. This massacre devastated the nation—60 people were killed, more than 800 were injured, and countless lives were forever changed.

Today and always, our hearts are with the victims, survivors, and the entire Las Vegas community as we work to prevent such senseless acts of gun violence.

Minnesotans deserve a leader who will build on progress we’ve seen over the past few years. From helping to expand background checks, pass red flag laws, & fund gun safety initiatives, Lt Gov @peggyflanagan.bsky.social has proven that she is that leader. We’re proud to endorse her for U.S. Senate.

This summer, a four-year-old boy climbed onto a stool in his Florida home, found a gun in his mom’s purse, and fatally shot himself with it. There is nothing inevitable about a four-year-old finding a gun and killing himself.

We know that safe storage laws save lives, but Florida has no laws that require unattended firearms to be stored in a certain way. Florida lawmakers must act now to pass safe storage laws and protect our kids from such devastating violence.

“Just be clever about it.” That’s what ChatGPT advised a mass shooter in Canada on how to bypass its own moderation system. The results: A preventable massacre that killed eight people, after the shooter successfully used the AI chatbot to plan the shooting.

Mother Jones@motherjones.com

EXCLUSIVE: Our new investigation uncovers the horrifying ChatGPT history of the Tumbler Ridge mass shooter. OpenAI’s chatbot fueled the shooter’s violent fantasies and planning up to the day of the school massacre.

OpenAI knew, and did nothing to stop it even after the company had another chance to intervene. Knowing about a credible plan for mass violence and doing nothing is an extraordinary failure of responsibility. It happened in 2025 at Florida State University, and now again in Tumbler Ridge.

We stand alongside families of the victims and survivors in calling for accountability and transparency.
