Should probably do an "introductory" thread: I work as a software developer, now for a company in London, but I live in a village in Fife, Scotland. Technically I've been on BlueSky for a bit over a year already but have only fully committed to the move since the US elected Trump for a second time.

pretty clear evidence that republicans in the US losing any election going forward are going to always beg for a coup if they lose. lots of people will have to go to jail

My heart is heavy. Walter Koenig, our Ensign Pavel Chekov, passed away early today. Walter and I met on the bridge of the Enterprise in the 1960s, and we stayed friends for nearly six decades. When Brad and I married in 2008, Walter stood beside us as our best man.

We’ve never learned this lesson in the UK. We still have to listen to the ‘legitimate concerns’ of a bunch of racists and fascists.

I’m not a political journalist, so was gladly surprised at the community I found here last night. To Americans anxious about the upcoming elections, a key thing we learned in Brazil that might help you: DO NOT engage with the far-right online. Don’t share rage bait. Amplify your people. Ignore them.

This is such a fantastic photo: "The Witches' Tea Party" but I want to use it to explain the origin of the tall, pointy witches hat. The real story of this photo: These are residents at the Hospital of the Holy & Undivided Trinity: an almshouse in Castle Rising, Norfolk, England established 1610.

I simply cannot support a politician that has not issued a policy paper with seven Pledges and eight Commitments called something like 'Sensible Growth for a Prosperous Forward'.

Lula’s victory in Brasil and the Student List’s win in Serbia show that the slide into rightwing authoritarianism isn’t inevitable. Whether over two years or three weeks, progressive majorities have been roused to defeat the far right through the hard work of organising.

I have not seen any reporting about this from Australian media. It is hard to overstate the extent to which this is a weird (and obsessive and hateful) British media thing.

Jess O'Thomson@jessothomson.co.uk

Viscerally upset by the Beth Upton stuff. They won't be satisfied until they have hounded a woman – who the tribunal explicitly found had done nothing wrong – to her death. Btw the "incident" in Australia is that a patient worried she *might* be forced to be treated by her. She of course wasn't.

First Orban, now Vučić. Both fundamentally undone by rank corruption of their regimes. Which is so often the reality of the authoritarian right in power. Really worth paying heed to in Western Europe right now

Peter Geoghegan@petergeoghegan.bsky.social

Wow. Vučić has conceded Serbian election. Massive moment for the entire Balkans

Look at the comparisons in the graphics here, between Scotland and England, and the rest of Europe, and remember that Westminster has most of energy policy reserved - so it’s their responsibility. And they’re not prepared to let us manage it ourselves.

Aye. I'm on Oil heating, no mains gas here. Refuse to fill up the tank just now. With prices this high, it would cost over £4,000 to properly heat this home over winter. Will make use of the wood burner and small electric heaters for as long as possible. It's not just Oil tho. Scot's impoverished...

In his acceptance speech, Lula says he will work to regulate digital platforms in Brazil. “Digital crimes must be dealt with like real-life crimes.” This comes after Meta directly interfered with the Brazilian elections, favouring Flávio Bolsonaro.

Gavin Greig reposted

In one day, two politicians - Bolsonaro in Brazil and Vucic in Serbia - with ties to Trump have lost surprise elections thanks to high turnout. The rise of the international far-right is not inevitable.

The same issue that lots of political ideals run into. Zionism needn’t inherently be racist; Zionism *as it is currently practiced* is. The Greens should have been more careful about that distinction.

How odd that Reform, Tory, and even Labour MPs know that Thatcherite privatisation caused Britian's massive debts, but want even more privatisation (of course, donations from private healthcare, fossil fuel etc lobbyists have no effects on their deeply held views) meme via The UK Against Hate

Rowling *never* writes about women’s rights, workplace discrimination or the threats to women from predatory men. I tracked her posts for five months: Well over 200 hateful transphobic smears. Not a single post about women’s actual concerns or needs None

I used to think that people who advocated this kind of thing were just honestly mistaken. The older I get, and the more I see of them, the more I think they just have no redeeming qualities.

Kat Tenbarge@kattenbarge.bsky.social

I left X almost exactly two years ago because of the violent, celebrated rape culture that was dominating the platform. Two years later, I’m undeniably better off, and the culture around sexual violence at large is arguably worse. I believe X has played a serious role in that.

The BBC trying very hard to be fair to both sides, but at the cost of taking overt racism at face value here by not reporting what the group was chanting, or what its banners said, but instead reporting content from its own website in what is supposed to be a news report about the protest

BBC report sanitises the overt racism: It notes that organisers warned marchers not to talk to journalists, then gives the "anti-immigration group"'s own sanitised description of itself. It does not report they chanted "England for the white man" in the streets. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

people like to cite the poem about the nazis eventually coming for you after other marginalized groups are left. and while thats true, it shouldnt even take you being affected to take action. you should just do it because its the right thing to do. you shouldnt need another reason.

i think the real thing that makes someone a leftist is when you start to actually give a shit about movements and issues that don't affect you. anyone can stand up for things that affect them. but it takes actual principles to stand up for groups you're not a part of. most people dont do this.

I was genuinely gobsmacked by the framing of the article. The headline is "man says he gets stick for supporting trans people", two-thirds of the piece is "but what about the poor terves?"

The Americans I know personally are good people who bear no personal responsibility for this. But the American electorate as a whole have thrown away the international standing the US used to claim for itself by electing Trump not just once, but for a second term. Jan 6th should have ended it.

Ian Dunt@iandunt.bsky.social

Obviously I want the utmost damage to Trump in the midterms, for Congress to constrain him & for a Democrat president in a couple years time. But honestly something broke in my relationship w America when Trump won the second time. I can't imagine feeling excited for an American president again.

Actually, it was plain he should never have been elected the first time. But going back in for more won’t be forgotten in a hurry.
