In this study, we evaluate the performance of an AQG absolute gravimeter (from our colleagues at LIAG Hannover) next to our iGrav superconducting relative gravimeter and a CG-6 at the Todenfeld observatory.

The iGrav is a very sensitive instrument for continuous observation of changes in subsurface water storage but it doesn't know absolute gravity. So this joint experiment gives pretty unique insights of the characteristics and a well-determined scale-factor to convert relative into absolute gravity.

πŸ€’πŸ˜‘ This literally isn't cool anymore. Kudos to @copernicusecmwf.bsky.social as it takes some discipline to formulate such numbers in levelheadedness (yes that's a word). For decades, the global ocean absorbed excess energy and, thus, buffered atmospheric effects. When this stops ... .

Two versions of my favourite ship, RV #Polarstern: one that I worked on during an #Arctic expedition in 2022 and one that I have just finished building from bricks. Evidently, I'm not too old for this!

This.

When I look at heatwave forecasts, I focus on that overnight low, like the shocking 27 C for NYC. "Tropical nights", when temps stayed above 20 C / 68 F, drove much of the mortality during past European heatwaves, and 2021 Pacific NW heat dome. Inability to cool off overnight is the silent killer.

We are officially at 68950, but that doesn't include 29 Starlink satellites launched May 1 and 45 rideshares launched May 3. We estimated we would hit 68999 on May 9. Time is running out. We will be making additional changes, like changing the default format to CSV. Watch here and spread the word!

Paper alert πŸš¨πŸ“’ GRACE-like reconstruction of terrestrial water storage, starting from the 1980ies(!). Thx to #openaccess PubFund of @unibonn.bsky.social find it for free at Copernicus ESSD via doi.org/10.5194/essd... This work by PhD cand. C.Hacker is part of @crc1502-detect.bsky.social 1/n

Very convenient data, esp. if you otherwise have none. We tested the data extensively vs terrestrial water budgets and even against data from the @esaearth.esa.int CCI sea level budget. I might give it a try also as GRACE 'gap filler'

As a use case, we derived monthly evaporation fluxes 1984–2020 for a selection of river catchments across the globe via water budgets. That's basically: subtract TWS change, precipitation & river discharge from each other, the rest is evaporative losses. Data: doi.org/10.5281/zeno... 3/n

While it is only a 1st look into what can be done /w the reconstruction, it's interesting how one can already see the water cycle change, e.g. /w increased precip in the Niger region, or a possible signature of deforestation in the Amazon that leads to more runoff and less evaporation. 4/n

The Two Line Element (TLE) format, which has been used to describe orbits of unique satellite objects for decades, is running out of available numbers within its standard. It appears many users are still not aware or have not switched to alternatives. (me too tbh since I'm not running op. services)

T.S. Kelso@tskelso.bsky.social

1/ Banners went up all over CelesTrak today because users continue to request GP & SupGP data in TLE formats. Of 1,200,556 requests on Feb 28, 95,675 are being redirected from deleted legacy files. Tens of thousands more are getting HTTP 404 errors.

Max TLE number for regular objects is 69999. β‰₯70k is for placeholder/analyses. In Feb26 we have already passed 67999. At the current rate of launches and insertion, this limit will be reached THIS SUMMER. See @tskelso.bsky.social 's recent posts if you haven't already, and be prepared πŸŒπŸš€πŸ›°οΈ
