Que orgulho do povo Brasileiro. Que alegria viver no mesmo tempo que Lula. Viva os povos indígenas, viva nossa natureza, viva a democracia, viva a ciência, viva a educação, viva os direitos humanos.

The organising by Lula's voters in Brazil right now is astonishing. They still might not win but they've put millions on the street and they have shifted the polls back to a tie -despite, in a friend's words, fighting "everyone -Trump, Meta, legacy media, the rich, betting companies, evangelicals".

Hello friends from outside Brazil For the past 2 weeks we've been fighting against Big Tech's algorithms clearly taking Flávio Bolsonaro's side, they aren't even hiding it anymore, it's surreal to see You can help us doing simple Google searches as the quoted post describes

Some people are reporting that the true result about the murder plan was not obtained in the first search Its called "Operação Punhal Verde e Amarelo" (operation Green and Yellow Dagger) the plan to murder Lula, Alckmin and Moraes, known and approved by Jair Bolsonaro.

Meta, X and other Big Techs are trying desperately to limit our reach on social media so we're trying to get to the search algorithms to spread the word: Flávio Bolsonaro is involved in crimes and schemes and is also trying to free his dad from jail, yes the one who attempted a coup d'etat

To all my non-Brazilian friends, please take a look at this to understand what is at stake for future elections ANYWHERE

Zuckerberg's own employees confirm that he directed an intentional effort to throw the Brazilian election in favor of Flávio Bolsonaro, apparently because he understood this is what Trump wanted. www.reuters.com/world/americ...

This was obviously not written by me, but those around me can attest that it might as well have been, given that everything I've been saying about AI in research is there. Great piece that everyone should read and reflect upon!

Some of my thoughts about the surge in AI-generated papers, why this feels like a completely new kind of problem, and what this means for how we evaluate science in biology. Out now in PLOS Biology: journals.plos.org/plosbiology/...

We found that the most gendered experience wasn’t work-life balance, the focus of most retention efforts. It was feeling devalued, in formal evaluations, but particularly in everyday interactions. Unlike every other topic, the gender gap in devaluation was larger among more senior faculty.

Why every university have a math department? Because all other departments need to talk to a mathematician at some point. And most of time that talk was not the best, sometimes was borderline disrespectful. Maybe what AI has done with mathematics, and mathematicians was give them back their humanity

Now that it's officially out, I have to say I'm quite proud of this work🙂 I got involved in it after a bit of a failure in another proj. Took way longer than it could. Started pregnant, published close to baby's 3rd bday😅 Very grateful for my patient mentors and collaborators doi.org/10.1093/molb...

I am pleased to share that our nowcasting R package {nowcaster} is finally on CRAN! The package wraps statistical models to estimate not yet reported data using an empirical delay distribution, either from individual-level data or from the differences of aggregated time series of cases.

Hear this wild idea out: what if we started blaming a system that forces researchers to publish a lot in little time? What if we stopped rewarding the number of papers when hiring new PIs? Do you really think researchers would still give up on doing what they love the most and hand it to AI?

Hetan Shah@hetanshah.bsky.social

AI is screwing up journal papers: Journal editor asks authors of 10 submitted papers to meet and discuss their paper. Of the 7 that showed up, 3 were unable to answer basic questions about the paper and 3 had difficulty when asked further questions on technical details… medium.com/@TmlrOrg/ask...

Don't get me wrong, I dislike (to put it mildly) AI more and more everyday, but if we don't stop blaming the tool and start rethinking the academic system, we are bound to a lost battle. Have a good weekend

Maybe one day I'll be one, but today is not the day (and each day I feel less and less hopeful, but I digress). You should definitely join if you can, though. The path towards a better academia is always easier when shared with the right people
