We had an amazing time at the Liberty Science Center this weekend! We brought our tunnel boring machine model and lots of educational activities to teach visitors of all ages about the science behind the Hudson Tunnel Project. Thank you, LSC, for organizing such a great event!

The tunnel boring machines building the new rail tunnel between New York and New Jersey are each longer than an entire football field, including both end zones 🏈 No matter who you cheer for on Sunday, everyone can agree: a modern tunnel that will make train travel better is something to root for!

Tunnel boring has started! After years of preparation, our first tunnel boring machine is getting to work, carving through the Palisades to build the first mile of the new rail tunnel’s northern tube. A second machine will start building the southern tunnel tube soon.

Tunnel boring machines do a lot more than just dig. They are underground factories that drill through the earth and build the tunnel tubes, positioning pre-cast concrete segments to form rings that lock together to make the tunnel lining. Who would have guessed that boring could be so interesting?

We’ve come a long way since crews dug the North River Tunnel by hand. @colleenonthescene.bsky.social dug deep into the history of the North River Tunnel for @northjerseynews.bsky.social to explain how tunneling has changed over the past 100 years. Spoiler alert: it's a lot easier with TBMs!

The tools and innovations to dig under the Hudson River dramatically improved since the Pennsylvania RR did it in 1906. But both projects share some similar challenges. Also we unearthed dozens of archival photos - check it out ⬇️

Our first tunnel boring machine is ready to launch! Check out everything that went into bringing this massive machine to life, from manufacturing and testing it in Germany to reassembling it on site in the launch box. This moment has been years in the making. Now it’s time to start digging!

GDC will hold a public Board meeting on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, at 10:00 A.M. Those wishing to participate virtually may submit written or pre-recorded video statements no later than Monday, September 28, 2026, at 5:00 P.M. Thank you to those who have already done so.

The Hudson River Ground Stabilization project is mixing concrete into the Hudson riverbed to make the ground firm enough for our tunnel boring machines to dig through. This takes a lot concrete mix. 208,000 cubic yards, to be exact. That’s enough concrete to build a sidewalk from NYC to Chicago!

Happy Labor Day! 🛠️ Today, GDC celebrates the skilled workforce that moves the Hudson Tunnel Project forward across New York and New Jersey. Hundreds of workers bring their dedication and expertise to our construction sites every day. Their commitment and hard work will keep our region moving!

This summer, GDC’s Community Engagement Centers became hands-on classrooms during our STEM exploration days 🔍 Students learned about the work behind building a new train tunnel. With guidance from project experts, they planned and built their own model tunnels 🚆

GDC's board meeting scheduled for August 19, 2026 is canceled and will be rescheduled. Notice of a new date and time will be provided in accordance with the GDC Act and GDC Bylaws and Open Meetings Policy. Additional details will be shared on our website when they are available.

In the 1800s, dirt and rubble were used to extend Manhattan’s shoreline. To prepare for tunnel boring through this fill, we’re installing pipes in Hudson River Park that will circulate cold brine underground, freezing the loose material into a solid block that is easier to tunnel through.

While the tunnel boring machines are assembled, crews are building access shafts in NY and NJ that will enable workers on the surface to support construction deep underground. Workers are currently installing the cap beams around the top of the shaft walls. Next step: excavation.

Two years ago today, GDC signed the Full Funding Grant Agreement for the Hudson Tunnel Project. You can see the progress we've made since then on both sides of the Hudson River, and in it. We're getting the job done, and we won’t stop until we deliver the reliable infrastructure riders deserve!

The Hudson Tunnel Project is more than infrastructure — it’s a real-world classroom. This year, GDC partnered with schools near construction sites to use the project to teach students about science, engineering, history, and more. We can’t wait to get back into classrooms in the fall!

GDC will hold a public Board Meeting on Monday, June 1, 2026, at 10 am. Members of the public who would like to participate virtually may submit written or pre-recorded video statements no later than Sunday, May 31, 2026, at 5 pm. Thank you to those who have already done so.

The walls of the new tunnel tubes will be made of thousands of interlocking concrete segments. The segments for the section of the tunnel under the Palisades in New Jersey are being manufactured now at a factory in Connecticut. Completed segments will start shipping to New Jersey soon!

Assembling tunnel boring machines is no small undertaking. Before these massive machines can begin digging, they have to be transported, delivered, and assembled. STV, part of the Hudson Tunnel Project delivery team, explains what goes into getting these complex machines ready to launch.

🚧Construction Update🚧 The HYCC-3 Project has entered a new phase: adding the roof to the tunnel box. We do this by filling the tunnel with sand and pouring concrete over it, then removing the sand once the concrete hardens. The end result: a fully enclosed box trains can travel through.

Our Chief Engineer has worked on tunneling projects all over the world. Hear him explain what it takes to tunnel through the Palisades cliffs and see the progress we’re making on assembling the machines that will get the job done in this new report from @nbcnewyork.com
