Software hardware hacky guy. I like game programming, old cameras, old AV equipment, woodworking, cats, techno remixes of Touhou music, and that one Garfield panel where Jon asks why they call it oven I made an open source console: https://gametank.zone

The GameTank is a project to build an open source console (done) and an ecosystem around it (in progress) The console itself is implemented as a homebrew 6502-based hobby computer that follows the ergonomic conventions of an 8-bit era console. i.e. cartridges, custom gamepads, analog AV output

wanted to increase the drama of the melee counter ability but this effect of blacking out the background and going full slowmo will probably get annoying quickly

application data sheet bragging about a speedometer being accurate to within 1 m/s which is 3.6 km/h that's kind of a crappy speedometer eh 🤷‍♂️

If anybody happens to be sitting on some old stock 2N5375 transistors I could use a couple to try to repair this vintage KIM-1 in a restoration-minded way

why do they call it a reflow oven when you of in the cold boards of out hot test the boards

"ExBus" short for Expansion Bus is the name I gave to a multiplexing protocol for PC-style addon cards to the GameTank. This protoboard card I just tested is designed to accelerate tinkering on ExBus by handling the mux logic and breaking out a select signal.

transcribed "Rude Buster" from Deltarune (from a MIDI, not by ear) to find places to improve my tracker's UI/workflow

GameTank SDK support for this tracker format is still on a branch. Need to fix SFX channel borrowing and the song stack feature, and move the legacy MIDI-based system to an option module before merging this into main.

writing self modifying assembly is a real good test of how well did I actually sleep

dragging the envelope array items now activates them as interpolation keyframes (right clicking deactivates them)

i need to implement serialization of this asap it is exhausting to fully define these configs

postponed that by writing better constructors to hardcode an initial config but hey the abstractions are now actually controlling the audio now! (tiem to sleep)

I could have adapted furnace or something I guess but I want to make the sound "chip" parametric, since the GameTank effectively has a software-defined soundcard

oh boy its my favorite kind of glitch the one that goes away when the scope probe is touching

Someday ill get the timing right to get past of the end of the stairs while staying in state.ascendingStairs so I can keep rising up and clip through the ceiling

ah yes, the hours before sending a rom file to the manufacturer to flash 300 cartridges the best time to muck around with the engine and risk introducing new bugs B)

I forgot to tell the factory that "WayWayWay" is a placeholder string for a fabrication date code 💀

I'm not super excited about blurry 50 fps gaming where it takes your $3000 gpu several frames to converge light into a discernible picture. I love how great games got to look but the tradeoffs we took aren't very good imo We need nice baked GI again that runs on a laptop you found behind a dumpster

im so glad you're working on the lightmapper.

spent all yesterday on tasks not inside a computer screen and that felt pretty good (gross as it was to open the P-trap when replacing the bathroom sink fixtures)

mind mapping on the whiteboard always ends up being the trick to clearing the ADHD static but for some reason I forget to do it until I've spent days too zoinked to do anything maybe i should write a reminder on the whiteboard

porting an old game to PC is the very definition of doing something for the love of the game, why is everyone infected with shareholder brainworms all of the sudden??

somehow I went weeks without a forced msoft restart and update and now the last three mornings I come back down to all my programs closed assumably to shove more lurching lasagna mandrels into my life without consent

After I replace the sticky tape holding the cassette head with actual M2 screws, next step is to try a few different ways of coating the disc in oxide.

Might start leading with "indie console" instead of "open-source console" I mean, the GameTank's still open-source! It's just that I often get asked what that means, when showing it outside of hackerspaces. :P

Which is totally fair- I talked to a lot of people this weekend who wouldn't feel much direct impact from the availability of schematics. They were excited at the prospect of a console outside the big three; especially one that embraces physical media and creators without corporate backing

Learning to write software is a gateway to incredible creative power that incurs no materials or external services costs, and there is a LOT of money going into trying to convince you otherwise. They want you to assume you have to pay them to accomplish anything, or else your ideas will languish.

Also is it just me or does it seem like there's been a fresh infusion of cash into the astroturf in the last 24-48 hours?

Hovering at a distance watching people interact with the tutorial text I rewrote at 1am to see if this is finally the phrasing that communicates the mechanic consistently 👀

I think I fixed it????? Also tutorialized the demo a bunch more and made it so you start out heading right instead of left

temporarily walled off sand so convention players wouldn't get stuck -> standing on that wall causes boss to hover in air indefinitely
