One of the great ironies of anti-intellectualism in American life today is that teens with blue hair and pronouns at the liberal arts colleges currently under attack clearly recieve the closest approximation to a traditional classical Western education available in the U.S.

Replying to @jamellebouie.net

kind of darkly funny that "gender studies" is the stereotypical "useless degree" because gender studies will help you understand a large and important chunk of the current psychosis in american life

I think it’s at least interesting how many of the same people who bristle at eminent domain enthusiastically support megaprojects like nationwide high-speed rail. Not to say private manufacture is equivalent to public works, but I wonder how much the distinction matters to the displaced.

Azalia King was the last holdout preventing the construction of a Micron "megafab." Onondaga County authorities threatened to use eminent domain to take her home away by force.

Ik this is sort of a TERF-adjacent talking point, and I really don’t mean it that way — but it’s always crazy seeing gay men’s role in their own liberatory struggle relegated to “dying of AIDS while other people did the real work”

Sorry to lib out but I’m basically sympathetic to the democrats’ argument that they can’t get as much done because they abide political guardrails that trump ignores, and that this is worthwhile even (or especially) if trump destroys those guardrails.

For the same reason, I think political violence is almost never justified (with notable exceptions), even in favor of causes I support. Short of total political revolution, these apparent policy wins have no grounding, and we cede moral clarity against republican political violence.

All this to say, it doesn’t feel like a very compelling “gotcha” to note Trump’s ability to enact large-scale change quickly relative to Democrats’. That’s the appeal of fascist tools. If they weren’t able to do this, there would be no need to resort to fascism.

The Democrats (rightly) aim to create a society with durable norms. The argument that they should have sured up guardrails against Trump’s power grabs is compelling, but the argument that they should have also enacted the left’s policy aims through undemocratic means is not.

Sort of a telling misread of the social dynamics at play here. The kids I knew in HS who most resembled these DOGE people were smart and politically engaged. They weren’t shoving nerds into lockers, they were running cross country and making “god emperor trump” memes with plausible deniability.

The worst people you went to high school with are now running our government. They're the people who cheated on tests, bullied the smaller kids, stole stuff from lockers and lied about other students behind their backs. They grew up, stayed awful and became MAGA.

Trump's Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy just sent out a memo directing staff to "give preference to communities with marriage and birth rates higher than the national average"

Reading Paul Schrader’s book on transcendental style and he talks about the pact made by moviegoers, that like a church service one does not leave half an hour in because they’re bored. Sort of gets at my frustration with audiences holding work at arms length, giggling as if they know better

You are up to date.
