Not sure what to make of the "Meth Unabomber" (a.k.a., Jack Dorsey) leaving Bluesky board, encouraging folks to remain on X, and endorsing Nostr. Is every rich a*hole just losing their sh*t in different ways? www.businessinsider.com/jack-dorsey-... www.theguardian.com/technology/a... nostr.com

What is up with Bluesky? Opened it today to find random crap on my home page, mostly in German, with none of the posts from the few people I follow. That is not useful to me.

Final Day 1 thought: Unless I am mistaken, Bluesky is much like Twitter/X is now: you can no longer access content unless you have an account and are logged in. So these are really no longer an open microblogging platform at all but simply another chat/collab type app. Not sure how I feel abt that.

With "old Twitter", you could simply send a friend a URL to the specific tweet of interest. They did not need an account. They simply clicked & were taken to a web page of the tweet. This is no longer true for either Twitter/X or Bluesky. So it's not nearly as much a broadcast medium as it once was.

First day's testing results of Bluesky: It is clearly early days. I am curious to see how things develop, however, especially around the AT Protocol and how federation works in the future. I do believe the future lies not in centralized "Big Tech" services but rather more distributed offerings.

Bluesky has rudimentary image support. In web version, can only open file selector. No drag/drop of any kind. Phone has usual image picker from library or using camera. Ironically, you can do basic image resize once selected. But that's it.

- No emoji support? Seriously? - And absolutely no formatting? Let's try some **MarkDown** and see what happens. I am guessing it will _fail_ miserably. Editing window definitely does not appear to support anything (like hitting Cmd-B to insert bolding of any kind). > Suspect this won't be quoted.

Nope. No formatting of any kind. And mobile app only allows emojis due to built in iOS 📱support, not support in app. This falls down in web version. So not even smileys.

Bluesky thread/reply support is meh. Giving up on that for now. Moving on to other bits. Will just do straight up posts for each observation for now. Again, apologies for the noise as I beat on this a bit.

Bluesky observations thread. This will be a tad stream of (un)consciousness, as I just tinker with Bluesky posting to see how things work/don't work. It is in no particular order.

Ok, maybe mobile is better. You click on a post to go into it, then scroll down through responses and can reply in box at bottom. That seems better than what I see in web version.

(paraphrasing) Someone said "Bluesky is like Twitter 10 years ago." Sounds about right. It feels like "early Twitter". I do like the overall responsiveness of Bluesky. It is "teh snappy." :-) Of course, I am relying on Ferdium to give me a native app-like feel.

Hmmm. Second observation: Bluesky UI/UX needs work. It does not update terribly well. I often have to reload the page or otherwise click away and back to see updated info. Also, posting replies in a thread is... weird. I see the OP + my first reply. But if I click on icon to reply, only the OP. Odd

First observation: Not a terribly big fan of mobile-centric services (a la WhatsApp), and Bluesky appears to fall into that camp. They have a website version, iOS and Android apps. But no native apps for desktop OSes. I am testing Bluesky using my iPhone and in Ferdium on a Mac. The latter helps.

First post! Ok ok, enough silliness. I am going to try something different here. Anyone who knows me knows I have reservations about the narcissistic aspects of social media in general. But I want to give Bluesky an honest fair shake. So I have to do more than just lurk. So here goes.

You are up to date.
