Are there people out there building custom game controllers (like people build mechanical keyboards)? Is there something like QMK but for HID gamepads?

I've fallen down the rabbit hole of building keyboards lately. This is my take on a planck, with a pseudo-split. Hand-wired with 48 keys, 4 RGB LEDs, runs QMK + Vial on a raspberry pi pico. It only took me about a day to get used to it, which was a surprise considering it's my first ortholinear!

I've come to the realisation that, in my personal projects, I basically never want them to be "production-ready". Because I really want to get into the root, fundamental stuff, there is always going to be a well established thing that people should use instead. I just want to know how it works.

I'm building something primarily with M3 hardware right now, and disappointedly found out limit switch holes are M2. So I did the obvious thing and ordered a set of M2 hardware. Just kidding, I drilled the holes out to M3.

I gave FreeCAD a go years ago, and it was just kind of incomprehensible. Tried again today, and it's actually...really usable? I'm not sure if it's having used a few other CAD tools in between, but it seems to have made some serious strides!

A small but impactful hack for my setup at work: A switch that maps my keyboard to either my Linux or Windows machine. It's literally just a SP4T switch, a couple of sliced up USB cables, and a cap across the power supply. The cap keeps remap settings when switching between computers.
