Roughly 25 ODNR inspectors are responsible for Ohio's 96,000 oil and methane gas wells. And the state wants to expand fracking for gas to run data centers? This is an environmental disaster in the making. @ccbecker271.bsky.social @peopleoverpetro.bsky.social @ssteingraber1.bsky.social

New report: Ohio recorded 2,529 oil and gas incidents from 2015 through 2025, rising from 103 a year to 268. With @buckeyeenviro.bsky.social, we went through ten years of ODNR records. Oversight isn't keeping up. 🧵 fractracker.org/2026/10/ohio...

These were regulatory approvals that allowed construction on over 5.9 square miles of land across Texas. We don't know if these data centers are complying with the suspensions. TCEQ needs to send inspectors to make sure they are.

On October 19th, the day we published our report, TCEQ's interim director wrote to the Governor that the agency had paused. Yet that very same day, TCEQ approved a concrete batch plant at the Stargate campus in Abilene. Its own record names the site "OPEN AI."

The directions say to turn at the "OPEN AI DATA CENTER ENTRANCE." The next day, TCEQ approved stormwater coverage for an Amazon Web Services data center in San Antonio, filed and approved the same day. TCEQ suspended both on Oct 21.

TCEQ has also suspended 17 data center approvals issued after Abbott's Sept 21 order. Stargate Abilene and Milam, Google, Amazon Web Services, QTS, Nscale's Microsoft site, and Chevron's Project Kilby, a 2.67 gigawatt gas plant being built to power a Microsoft data center.

When wastewater from DeepRock's injection wells shot out of a Noble County well at 42 gallons a minute in 2021, the injection wells got suspended, but no additional fines or violations came after that.

ODNR has about 25 inspectors and Ohio has about 96,000 active wells. We looked at how long inspections take and figured each inspector would need something like 664 workdays to get to all of them once, so it's 2.5+ work years before anyone checks the same well again.

"Minor" isn't minor. In 2016, static electricity from power lines made a Columbiana County tank explode, releasing 2,478 gallons of crude oil and 210 gallons of oil and gas wastewater. ODNR classified it minor. The well hadn't been inspected in 12 years.

Much of the radioactivity of fracking waste is alpha and beta radiation, radon, particulate matter. Monitoring gamma radiation is one step in the right direction, but not enough to quantify the full harm and risks a program that deems radioactive waste "safe".

Through Right-to-Know requests, we obtained about 400,000 pages of PA waste records. A Chesapeake wastewater sample held radium at nearly 2,000× EPA's drinking-water limit, which only lab testing reveals. PA needs enforceable, agency-led requirements

Brine is waste fluid from the Oil and Gas industry. Analysis of brine from PA shipped to Ohio shows high levels of radioactive and other hazardous material. @buckeyeenviro.bsky.social 's map of where is is being spread should be closely followed by communities nearby concerned about potential risks.

Where has oil and gas waste brine been spread in Ohio? Our new blog post takes a closer look at what it shows, how brine spreading continues in Ohio, and what it means for communities. Explore the map and read more: benohio.org/where-has-oi...

At FracTracker, we strive to remind everyone that we all live downstream. Through data collection, mapping, and analysis, we track fracking, pipelines, data centers, refineries and other parts of the fossil fuel economy so the people downstream are not the last to know.

“Essentially the same thing.” PA oil & gas reps are asking why brine from existing wells can’t be treated as “mineral brine.” @paenvironmentnews.bsky.social reports, they’re discussing repermitting wells so brine “can be used for other applications”, including spreading on roads.

Pennsylvania's oil and gas wells reported 3 billion gallons of liquid waste last year. One sample tested at nearly 2,000x EPA's drinking-water limit for radium. Thanks to a 1980 loophole, that's not classified as hazardous waste. Read the report from Matt Kelso: fractracker.org/2026/08/penn...

fractracker.orgTracking Pennsylvania’s Oil and Gas Waste in 2025 - FracTracker AlliancePennsylvania's oil and gas wells reported 72.6 million barrels of liquid waste and more than 825,000 tons of solid waste in 2025, with unconventional wells accounting for nearly all of it. This analys...

Where it goes matters too. Injection wells took about 6% of that liquid waste — but 3 in every 4 barrels of that waste went to injections wells in Ohio. This new report gives context to the crucial reporting from the New York Times about risks of these wells. www.nytimes.com/2026/07/29/c...
