The crack publishing team for Five Songs really brought their F-game again, forgetting to hit the, like, two buttons to publish yesterday's installment. It's up now! I try to write about atmospheric Halloween music and just end up writing about industrial: www.fiverandomsongs.com/posts/2026/f...

New Five Songs is up, in which I begin contemplating Halloween music, to what we can basically regard as "mixed" results. I guess if you want to clear a party, this list can help you out. It really went off the rails. I guess it's spooky? www.fiverandomsongs.com/posts/2026/f...
I did post Five Songs late yesterday and then forgot to post here about it. Anyway, it's up, and it's revealed that I'm old. I know! Also: clueless. Music is discussed. www.fiverandomsongs.com/posts/2026/f...
Five Songs is up, with no particular theme other than the continued observation that the fall is noise rock season: www.fiverandomsongs.com/posts/2026/f...
In this post, I mention that I can't define emo and won't try. I then came across this list (www.emokidsanonymous.com/top-200-emo-...) via @garbageday.email and I'm even more sure I can't define it. Hoover? Drive Like Jehu? Fugazi? Coheed & Cambria? Baffling.
Five Songs, in which I explore the contents of the noise rock tag on Bandcamp and mostly complain about the contents. Riveting stuff! www.fiverandomsongs.com/posts/2026/f...
Five Songs! I forgot to post this yesterday! I wrote it, like, a month and a half ago! Listen to Butter Sugar Toast! www.fiverandomsongs.com/posts/2026/f...
The yearly stuff has come to and end, at least for now, so this is just some themeless writing. Mostly records you're already aware of. I do finally write about that Doppler record that came out this year, it rips. "Five Songs: they can't all be winners!" www.fiverandomsongs.com/posts/2026/f...
We're back in 1985 with Five Songs, and what am I going to talk about from 1985 other than Hüsker Dü's incredible run of records. Also, an incredible Foetus record. www.fiverandomsongs.com/posts/2026/f...
Five Songs arrives in 1986, the year I remember first buying a record with my own money. The records in here are frankly all over the map, but they're all good: www.fiverandomsongs.com/posts/2026/f...
I spent some time back on Twitter making fun of the various digital board game replacement gizmos that people would try and throw out there, and I see that there's a brand new one, the Ever Board (www.polygon.com/everboard-ta...). Let's have a look!

Five Songs arrives in 1987, a year of some monumental releases in metal and hip-hop, none of which I really talk about much. What are you going to do? Anyway, I do write up a Negativland record, so there is that. Can you believe that this is free? www.fiverandomsongs.com/posts/2026/f...
Dan's thread here on hosting his own work applies to so many people. I know there are discovery problems, believe me. I run a music blog that has ten readers on a good day. But if you're on somebody's else platform, you still have that problem, plus you inherit every problem of the platform.
I know there are costs. Oh, trust me, I know it. I pay for my own site, and my income from Space-Biff! is pretty meager. I'm not even anti-BGG, really. But I wish more BGG bloggers, especially those who think of themselves as doing serious work, would disentangle from somebody else's platform.
Five Songs is in 1988, and I don't have a lot of personal stories relating to these records, because I was a hopeless dork back then. Now as well, of course, but I'm a more knowledgeable hopeless dork. Progress! www.fiverandomsongs.com/posts/2026/f...

Five Songs has wound backwards to 1989, wherein I reminisce about debate camp. Yes, debate camp. Shut up! Also NoMeansNo, Einstürzende Neubauten, Operation Ivy, and others. www.fiverandomsongs.com/posts/2026/f...
Five Songs reaches 1990, a high school year from me, and I reveal my major extracurricular activity. Also, Skinny Puppy is in here. www.fiverandomsongs.com/posts/2026/f...
Five Songs is up, on 1991. And I go on and on about some records, like the infamous Negativland U2 single. But great stuff, too! Tar! Surgery! Cop Shoot Cop! www.fiverandomsongs.com/posts/2026/f...
Five Songs is in 1992. I reminisce about WRCT and tape trading, and failed to mention that the latter led to the bassist of a band on tour crashing in my dorm room one night. Hard to imagine that happening today! For starters, I don't live in a dorm. www.fiverandomsongs.com/posts/2026/f...
Five Songs, in which a story about superglue is told which does not look good for me. It's also probably not even the funniest superglue story I have from college. Also, some music is involved: the Grifters! Demilich! The Fastbacks! www.fiverandomsongs.com/posts/2026/f...
I still remembered to post this today! I mean, everybody is in bed, but whatever. So am I! Anyway, Five Songs is in 1994, I'm talking about college radio, and you're going to roll your eyes at one of these records: www.fiverandomsongs.com/posts/2026/f...
Five Songs is up, on the correct day. We're in 1995, I'm graduating from college, I talk about the Karl Hendricks Trio, and we've got some new releases: www.fiverandomsongs.com/posts/2026/f...
Yesterday's Five Songs was just posted. Editorial (me) is furioius with tech (me). Anyway, 1996: I moved to Seattle thanks to a classified ad, Gaunt is praised, Phono-Comb is remembered, and I defend an album nobody cares about: www.fiverandomsongs.com/posts/2026/f...
The threat has always been there, but as I reach 1997 on the blog, the day is finally here. Five Songs: The Skapocalypse. It's the peak year for ska, and I was listening to a lot of it. If you skip this one, you're a coward. www.fiverandomsongs.com/posts/2026/f...
Five Songs is up! We're in 1998, and I write more about learning to cook than about music. Some all-time records are mentioned alongside a ska record nobody but me remembers. Death is missing. www.fiverandomsongs.com/posts/2026/f...
@davidjroth.bsky.social I have only read the recap and haven't listened yet, but I cannot wait for "Drew Described Eternity".
Five Songs wanders back to 1999, with mentions of surf rock, a rap opera, and a ska record nobody has heard of. Wait, come back! www.fiverandomsongs.com/posts/2026/f...
New Five Songs is up! Today we're looking at 2000, a year I was very fortunate, an throwback hip-hop classic released, a left-field hip-hop classic released, and some other records also happened. Happened? Jesus, Josh, get your shit together. Send post. www.fiverandomsongs.com/posts/2026/f...
Yo @mlb.com this fucking sucks, keep this rancid shit away from me! Also, have you forgotten what happens when baseball gets in bed with gamblers, you historically ignorant bozos?
