Ygra is such an interesting card, probably one of the most interestingly designed cards in quite some time. There's so many ways to build it: Food, Control, +1/+1, Aristocrats... But that wide design space make it one of the most complicated commanders for me to build personally. My thoughts...

This leads to inconsistent gameplay. You need card selection from two different themes with little redundancy in either department. Also Golgari is notorious for lack of card draw which complicates the matter, especially since most of the draw options don't synergize well with Ygra as a commander.

So it works, but not always well. Can have some banger games where Ygra sweeps the game, and others where you don't draw into any of the cards you need for your 2nd theme and there's just not much you can do. I love Ygra, and one day I'll find a way to perfect it. Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk.

Go Control? Hope your opponents have plenty of creatures to feed off of and hope Ygra doesn't get removed (spoiler: it will) because almost all of your cards are one-and-done so if you have to start from scratch building it back up, it's going to be rough.

All of this plus Ygra is an expensive commander at 5 mana AND a massive threat, so it needs heavy protection and mana to get it back out once it dies. So that means you need great ramp and a melody of protection options. This takes away from card slots you need to fuel two separate above themes.

This means you need to use a combo of these themes. And it definitely works; it just doesn't work consistently. Go foods? You'll play weaker cards to generate foods and then you still need a way to sac them since paying 2 mana per food is inefficient. Then you'll have to dip into Aristocrats.

Go Aristocrats? You'll need to generate tokens, which also typically involve food generation as above since White has much better raw conditionless token generation. Also many Aristocrat staples share no synergy with Ygra itself.

Aristocrats: This theme has good support in Golgari, though I think Orzhov does it better. Also Aristocrats typically involves a grindy group-slug kind of gameplay that directly opposes Ygra's theme of growing big and taking out people with Commander damage.

Control: If everything is food, that means you can fuel Ygra with opponent's creatures. Why sacrifice your own board when you can make opponents sacrifice theirs and grow Ygra anyway? Well, you're at the mercy of opponent's board states and control doesn't have much repeatability or recurrence.

+1/+1 Counters: Ygra is the only thing that cares about +1/+1 counters. Putting in things like Branching Evolution or Hardened Scales is great but the only thing it affects is Ygra. Also those cards do nothing by themselves, you need something to put counters on Ygra so you need foods to die.

Food: Ygra obviously loves food. While food has been getting some great additions in recent sets, food as a theme overall is still a weak theme IMO, with inefficient support. Compared to many other themes, food-related cards typically can cost a lot of mana for little payoff and minimal impact.

I also don't like infinite combos. Nothing's more boring than a game ending on turn 5 by someone saying "I win" while most people have near-full life and an established board state. That said, let's get on to why I find Ygra so interesting, but so difficult to build.

While there's loads of ways to build Ygra, I don't think any singular way will work due to lack of support or synergy. This means you need to use a combination of these strategies which can lead to inconsistent gameplay. Let's look at some of these strats and see why they don't work in a vacuum:

Here's my deck as of now: archidekt.com/decks/162178... Pretext to how I build: I like bracket 3 decks. It's a perfect mix of allowing synergy & letting games last a good amount of time, but not go on too long. Not sure about you, but I play MTG to PLAY & enjoy the game, not for it to be over ASAP.
