Let me tell you a story about the politics of Australia: Over the last 28 years generally, but over the last decade particularly, I've done a lot of politics outside of Australia. Last week, an organisation I work with called me in for a meeting mostly among people like me around the world /n
For two years, student-led protests have raged against Aleksandar Vučić and his corrupt government in Serbia.
Today, in parliamentary elections, he was toppled.
One of the most sustained protest movements in recent European history has succeeded.
Resistance works.
Thank you, thank you, thank you to everyone who spared a thought for my country today, who amplified information about the coup d’état attempt, and worried about Brazil’s democratic future—the world’s democratic future. We won! Women won! The Amazon won! Young people won! Democracy won! Hope won!
the right want Helen Haines' attacker to be left wing. the left want him to be right wing. the picture that is emerging is far more complicated. what it doesn't change is that this was an act of gendered violence, and that exists across the political spectrum.
The IDF is addicted to murdering children, aid workers, and journalists.
Anyone with any links to the IDF or Israeli govt should be regarded as a war criminal.
Israeli settlers attacked a Jewish American journalist in broad daylight, and Israeli soldiers did nothing. She said from her hospital bed, "Sadly, none of them will be prosecuted. I am sure of it.” @premthakker.bsky.social asks, "Are we going to let her be right?"
Did you know rooftop #Solar provided 47% of Australia’s energy needs, utility scale solar provided 22%. Total renewable energy was 80% And this happened 2 days in a row now. How long now before we see periods of 100%? Or will coal’s inability to shut down stop it?
Worrying scenes in the Channel today, for all interested in asylum policy and maritime tactics.
A small boat from Normandy spent more than 30 hours at sea. Those on board now on their 2nd rescue vessel as Border Force forced to play cat and mouse with far-right activists who have their own boat.
“Rupert Murdoch has done more than any living person, I’ve come to believe, to prevent governments from acting on the emissions that are heating the planet.”
So true. Murdoch has poisoned climate policy for decades in Australia and globally.

Headline "Education Standards going to Hell: AGAIN!" Same headline for last thirty years. Most significant finding in #NAPLAN ? Students in disadvantaged areas are still not achieving - cf: students in wealthy areas. That's the tragedy of Australian #Education .
www.theguardian.com/australia-ne...
Something that’s been lost in the NAPLAN reporting today: the equity gap in our school system is growing.
First Nations kids, kids living in poverty, and those in regional, rural and remote communities are falling further behind.
Most of them attend an underfunded public school.
The continuation of the genocide in Gaza does not manifest in the almost-daily killing of civilians, which while horrible is not evidence for genocide. Rather, it is Israel's refusal to allow the recovery of the most basic conditions of life, which shows the attempt to destroy an entire society.

That time of year again:
Glossy ads for private schools in a 24 page colour supplement.
Our class system on proud display.
If Labor governments didn’t funnel so much revenue to these wealthy schools, public schools would be better able to deliver “excellence” to the majority of students. #auspol
My timeline appears to be split on whether this Binface is funny or naff. In the avoidance of doubt, it's a joke that's became naff through overuse, but has come round to wonderful relevance again in these specific set of circumstances. So yes, if you're not team Binface now, you're losing.

“They’ve voted against cheaper electricity. They’ve voted against cheaper childcare. They’ve voted against free TAFE. And they’ve got a leader who while she’s saying workers should be easier to sack and paid less is flying around the country on Gina Rinehart’s private jet.”

"Something remarkable happened in April. For the first time in history, wind and solar generated more electricity than gas across the entire planet. Not in a country. Not in a region. Globally."
Tons of great news here from Danny Kennedy (via @billmckibben.bsky.social's newsletter, which rules).
Fascists always come for educators first—we know why.
We teach students to think for themselves, solve problems, question & analyze.
We teach them the world's a big place with all kinds of people—and there’s beauty in diversity.
They come for us because education is the foundation of democracy.
"Questions that have long structured our thinking about China—will it democratize?
Will it converge with Western norms?
When will its contradictions catch up with it?—may be entirely irrelevant.
New questions must take their place: What kind of world power should China become?"
“The very last thing Ireland needs…is another self-inflicted crisis. Yet, the government is gearing up for it by embracing militarism…
wading into wars with what little spending Ireland is capable of, would represent a significant threat to our security”
