Seems smart. You don't want successful politicians associated with socialism.

NEW: DSA's National Political Committee passed two resolutions today aimed at Los Angeles mayoral candidate Nithya Raman, beginning processes that could result in DSA-LA being forced to rescind its endorsement of her this weekend and/or Raman herself being expelled from DSA by January.

This brings me no joy

Pro-ICE conservative blogger Samuel Sey, a prominent figure on the evangelical right, has himself been arrested and held for potential ICE deportation.

Our investigation into allegations of data fabrication at the firm SoCal Strategies, and an alleged association with the admittedly fraudulent firm Wedgewood Polls, has resulted in the pollster wiping itself from the face of the earth. Full story at 50+1: blog.fiftyplusone.news/p/more-polls...

Yes life is confusing and often out of your control. But that has always been true. Specific quantities like unemployment rate can change month to month. There are more curmudgeons than optimists today and that's probably a consequence of gerontocracy.

Judah Grunstein@judah-grunstein.bsky.social

I think this explains in the language of econ what @tressiemcphd.bsky.social has been arguing in the language of sociology, but which many people deny because it doesn't show up in the charts. People grasp how vulnerable they are to life's vagaries, even if the lexicon they use is affordability.

I've built 10 fires as an engineer. 0 have been on purpose.

Zach Weinersmith@zachweinersmith.bsky.social

I was thinking maybe panel three should have been Engineers, but then you have to account for who is building the fire.

It's odd to say this when France is on the verge of electing a far right government

Dr. Manhattan@thenewthinker.bsky.social

people in the US don’t protest like they do in France because the propaganda in the US is so strong that people internalize their failures instead of correctly seeing it as a product of a immoral, capitalist system

Bluesky today reminding me that there are a lot of homeowners out there who consider themselves diehard progressives but will turn into Grover Norquist the second you suggest that taxing the wealth held in their homes is fine and good.

Jacobin is correct, which is why Russia must be defeated swiftly and decisively.

Jacobin@jacobinmag.bsky.social

After years of warnings that the war in Ukraine could spiral into a full-on Russia-Europe conflagration, the conflict has reached a point where this is a real possibliity. It’s a prospect that threatens not just European lives but the entire globe.

This isn't too surprising if you have read about the internal politics of the DSA.

Chris Sommerfeldt@c-sommerfeldt.bsky.social

Pro-Palestinian protesters gather outside City Hall to call out Mayor Zohran Mamdani for what they see as his betrayal of the movement. "Mayor Mamdani, you can't hide we charge you with genocide" was a chant that just rang out.

One can make arguments for this policy, but the Green party is British. How would they even do this without the consent of the people who are currently living there? How would they actually establish that?

People really underestimate how many millionaires the country has. The ratio is far more than 1000:1

Dare Obasanjo@carnage4life.bsky.social

I was thinking to myself earlier this week that it's better for the economy and the world to have 1,000 people who can afford a Rolls Royce than one person who can afford 1,000 Rolls Royces. It's weird to see a similar message in a political ad as if I manifested it. I agree with this 100%.

Mass mobilization does make it politically unpopular to wage wars. But in an era of cheap mass production drones, what is to stop mad men?

Liberal Currents@liberalcurrents.com

"The future of warfare will be defined not by war but by 'neither peace nor war:' states of conflict characterized by endemic raiding, diplomatic posturing without resolution, and an increased unwillingness to distinguish between military and civilian targets."

I find these memes interesting because the actual stats end up being less impressive. 43% of Finland has a college degree while the US is at 50%. On the PISA, the US ties with Finland on science and math while doing better on reading. Having tuition or not doesn't seem to make a difference.

The problem with Republican senators today is none of their staffers have normal hobbies, like sports

Sahil Kapur@sahilkapur.bsky.social

A phenomenal moment in the Senate. Eric Schmitt, R-Mo., claims he has evidence Jack Smith went to a HAWKS game in Atlanta. Smith denies it. Schmitt declares he has busted Jack Smith for perjury. Smith, vexed, says he went to HAWKEYES game in Maryland. WATCH IN FULL, UNINTERRUPTED

It's amazing just how cynical this movie is in retrospect. But I disagree with the author's blame on corporations. Many people who were "mad as hell" decided the right approach was to reject New Deal liberalism and vote for Reagan's neoliberalism in 1980 (even more in 1984).

Liberal Currents@liberalcurrents.com

"What sociologist Ulrich Beck called 'the causes of our affliction' became ever more abstract and complex, impersonal and apocalyptic all at once. Pollution, radiation, inflation: invisible killers all. So, what do we do about it? The answer has been the same since the late 1970s."

If Mamdani can get Sunnyside Yards built it'll be great but the federal government won't give the money and it won't be built in just 4 years.

Henry @henrythedog.bsky.social

Mamdani: "We also know the president not just as the leader of the country, but also as someone who has built quite a lot of housing in our city."

It's sort of odd when people say "my country" when they're American. Piker is from New Jersey just like me. Sure I can give you opinions about Ireland influenced by my Irish heritage but I don't live there so my opinions aren't worth a whole lot.

Not only is this not what happened, this shows that Piker is tankie scum and an authoritarian at heart.

There's a surprisingly large overlap between people who say housing is a human right and who also propose laws that would infringe on that right.

Sam@samd.bsky.social

it’s awesome that Zohran and Nithya are true YIMBYs but it still pains my soul every time I see a left-NIMBY candidate running @davidmoralespvd.bsky.social just a heads up that unfunded inclusionary zoning mandates just make housing less affordable! please get a more serious housing policy!

I know we're all supposed to be herding onto the anti-data center bandwagon, but man, I worry a *lot* that it's going to overspill its borders & become a more generalized anti-wind & solar, anti-battery, anti-grid-infrastructure, anti-transmission, anti-anything mega-glonzo that leaves us worse off.

Most of these are dumb ideas but we really do need more homes and energy.

In the future popular authors won't get a movie or even a TV miniseries based on their novel. Instead, their work will be broken into microdramas that cut out all the nuance and worldbuilding.

There’s a category called Microdramas on Peacock and every show just looks bizarre. Like the streaming equivalent of a B-movie or pulp fiction, except without the kitsch/camp

This article starts out about data centers but veers into complaints against electrification in general which would still generate complaints if these were solar panels instead. I don't think people, even those who care about the climate, understand the scale we'll need even without AI.
