Alonso was one of the four drivers to reach 351 km/h during the #USGP! The Honda-powered Aston can reach high top speeds (low drag, possibly decent ICE power), but not CONSISTENTLY: deployment is unsustainable, so Astonโ€™s AVERAGE top speed was the lowest of any team

Ferrari started the season aiming to improve their straight-line performance. So far, they do NOT seem to have achieved that: only Aston was slower on average, with Ferrari matching Audi. Epic drives by LEC and HAM, scoring 30 points from P4-P5 with such a low top speed!

RACE PACE #F1 No driver set quicker lap times than LEC! Ferrari 1-2 pace-wise๐Ÿ”ฅ (HAM was just 0.103 s/lap slower, VER 0.140 s/lap behind) Still, ANT was within 3 tenths of LEC despite using one fewer set of tyres: he lost ~16s on pace but saved ~20s by not pitting. Terrific pace and management ๐Ÿ‘Œ

No doubt Mercedes is still the aero leader: highest top speed (low drag, as shown by +4 km/h vs McL on the same PU) AND fastest through fast Turn 19 (high downforce) โ†’ unmatched efficiency VER lost just 10 km/h (vs ANTโ€™s 33 km/h) between lap start and lap end โ†’ more sustainable deployment ๐Ÿ”‹

LEC had the highest minimum speed and stayed at full throttle longer than anyone else, but his top speed was baffling. His 15 km/h deficit to ANT cost him 0.285s on the main straight alone, less than his gap to pole! McL didnโ€™t shine anywhere What's your podium prediction? ๐Ÿ‘€ #F1

FP2 LONG RUNS ๐Ÿ“Š NOR fastest overall (only top-team driver on Hards) VER quickest on Softs (+0.258 s/lap vs NOR), Antonelli on Mediums (+0.369 s/lap) LEC was quicker than VER at the start of the stint, but suffered worse wear. HAM was very slow at the end of his stint: will Ferrari have high deg?๐Ÿค”

Iโ€™m opening a big can of worms: should #F1 bring back refueling? ๐Ÿค” Big reasons to do itโ€ฆ but also not do do it! Read this thread to understand this topic better, and comment with your opinion! [Collab with Formula Professor on IG]

By mistake, the FIA didnโ€™t activate overtake mode in SQ1 after the red flag. This serious issue severely limited straight-line performance (~10 km/h loss in top speed). Crucially, it was then reactivated for 27s, unfairly advantaging those who could exploit it! Look at OCO: โฌ›๏ธ L5 (Issue) ๐ŸŸง L8 (OK)

RACE PACE LEC was fastest on average... but only due to the extra tyre set vs VER! Two Stops 1) LEC 2) ANT +0.29 s/lap 3) PIA +0.47 One Stop 1) VER +0.10 s/lap vs LEC 2) NOR +0.65 3) HAM +0.86 (!!) VER's incredibly consistent pace proves he was managing his pace #F1 #SingaporeGP

๐ŸŸฆVERโ€™s stop-and-go approach got him pole: he lost time around the apex of most corners, but gained massively on corner exit ๐ŸŸฉRUS reached the highest top speed, deploying more early in the lap [Continues below ๐Ÿ‘‡]

๐ŸŸฅLEC had excellent mechanical grip... and a lack of power! He could stay full-throttle for longer and had the highest minimum speed, but also the lowest top speed ๐ŸŸงPIA was fastest by far in the fastest corner (highest downforce), yet he struggled with traction and high drag

Alonso earned 4 points by overtaking on track despite having the worst top speed of any driver (except VER, who lacked slipstream/overtake mode in the dry, and BOT, who retired early)! Legend:โ€จ๐Ÿ”ด Overtake Mode/Slipstreamโ€จโšช๏ธ Free air -McLaren/Alpine had the highest top speeds -RBR/Aston the lowest

๐Ÿ“Š RACE PACE (with a new look!) VER won through sheer pace: +0.36s/lap quicker than next-best ANT! Ferrari had a terrible Sunday start (issues during the formation lap, wrong tyre choice), but LEC and HAM recovered through excellent pace: HAM was just ~0.1s/lap slower than the championship leader!

ALO had the 10th best pace, deserving his points. He also had the lowest top speed of any driver who used overtake mode, making his racecraft even more impressive ๐Ÿ‘ This "Bahrain" GP was great: for next year, let's make the "Spanish GP" at Spa, please! ๐Ÿคฉ #F1 #BahrainGP

FP2 LONG RUNS ANT was quickest overall, setting excellent lap times on both Mediums and Softs LEC was next quickest (on Softs), but both he and HAM suffered from high degradation on that compound. McLaren was slower than LEC, but managed their tyres far better VER's was QUICK on worn Mediums! #F1

My new analysis, 'Top Speed Distribution', revealed something interesting about FP2 ๐Ÿ‘€ -ANT ran a less powerful mode than RUS for most of the session, but then got full power on a few laps/straights #F1 #BahrainGP

-BOT, ALB, PER, PIA, GAS, HUL, and STR were playing with deployment: they tested deploying more or less on the main straight, resulting in either high๐Ÿ”‹ or very low๐Ÿชซ top speeds (STR didn't even hit 300 km/h!) -VER (334 km/h) and LEC (330) reached high top speeds, but just once, and with a slipstream

Florent Gooden (Motorsport photographer) actually has one in his office! He sent me these pictures: having a RB16B bargeboard must be nice!

Formula Data Analysis@fdataanalysis.bsky.social

#F1 bargeboard complexity peaked in 2021: here's Newey's 2021 Red Bull in the special white livery used in Turkey! Due to this complexity, following the car in front was a NIGHTMARE! Things improved massively the following year, with the start of the ground-effect era

"GP2 Engine"? Alonso would happily make the switch, as the Formula 2 cars were WAY FASTER in the speed trap than he was! ๐Ÿคฏ In FP1, F2s already hit a 322 km/h MEDIAN top speed, which was higher than the HIGHEST (321) reached by both Astons during the GP! [Via JMP #YesJMPCan #adv]

F2 cars run a 3400cc turbocharged V6, producing ~620hp at 8700rpm It has therefore way less power than the combined ICE + ERS power of an F1 engine, but it's still more powerful than F1's ICE. And, once the battery runs dry, F1 cars are left with the ICE only!

Bearman reached 350 km/h during the Baku GP, the highest of any driver!๐Ÿš€ Similar top speed to the one at the start of the ground effect era (351), but far below what BEA himself hit last year (361) RUS reached 329 with NO OVERTAKE MODE OR SLIPSTREAM! ANT hit the highest average top speed (343) #F1

RACE PACE (Impacted by traffic โš ๏ธ) -RUS had the best pace on track, but VER spent the whole race behind PIA and RUS! Mercedes likely had the upper hand, yet RBR performed brilliantly here -Ferrari was way back: LEC 0.66 s/lap slower than RUS despite also running in free air for most of the race

-PIA was only marginally quicker than LEC before the lockup, and struggled afterwards -BEA was the best midfielder pace-wise, yet LIN finished in front of both Haas -William's pace was terrible: SAI was helped by the SC, then he 'survived' long enough to score points!

BEST SECTORS LEC did well by almost matching RUS in sector 1, but his best sector 2 was still 4 tenths away of Russell's McL was next quickest in S2, Alpine (Mercedes PU) in S3 (where McL still struggled despite having the same PU)

MINISECTOR ANALYSIS Mercedes does seem to have excellent aerodynamic efficiency, in addition to very high power: PIA (same power unit) had a better exit out of T16, yet RUS easily reached and surpassed his speed, gaining throughout the straight

Mercedes smashed everyone's championship hopes by taking pole by 0.837s: LEC (P2) was way closer to P9 (-0.684s) than to RUS! ๐Ÿคฏ And that's on the 15th quali of the season, despite significant upgrades from the other teams ANT will overtake everyone but RUS

RUS was fastest in every sector, had by far the best top speed (331 km/h, vs just 322 km/h for "best ICE" RBR and 321 km/h for RBs, same as Aston), and had no shortage of energy: he crossed the line 16 km/h faster than he was at the start of the lap

So it's confirmed: Ferrari's 'ADUO 2' upgrade (which only HAM had in Madrid) was significant, providing 18hp more in some crucial phases (peak power on corner exit, between 260-310 km/h, in the clipping area) and similar performance elsewhere ๐Ÿš€

Formula Data Analysis@fdataanalysis.bsky.social

Ferrari's ADUO 2 #F1 engine upgrade, introduced at Monza, is worth ~15hp based on my calculations! ๐Ÿ“ˆ OCO ran the standard engine, BEA the upgraded one In quali, BEA accelerated harder at EVERY SPEED: 15.4hp required to explain that gap

This debunks a lasting myth: that one #F1 manufacturer (RBPT?) can have the best ICE but not the best ERS. Ferrari's upgraded ICE made their clipping vastly better, which is exactly what you'd expect, since all energy comes from the ICE anyway! Whatโ€™s your opinion?

Sainz (and Williams) had the best starts this season! ๐Ÿš€ 2026 #F1 START ANALYSIS - Key Points: -Williams and McLaren had the best starts; Aston and Audi the worst. Ferrari lost its start advantage... -HAM made the quickest start: 4.45s to 200km/h in Madrid! -RUS had the worst: 6.85s in Hungary

PIA and HAM had the best starts, yet their race turned into a nightmare: 2.4s to reach 100 km/h, just 4.5s in total to reach 200 km/h. PIA was on Hards, making this result even more impressive! Aston and Audi were the worst cars off the line by far: something to improve on

๐ŸŸงNOR had the best RACE PACE at the SpanishGP (0.24s/lap quicker than ๐ŸŸฉ ANT, 0.41s/lap quicker than ๐ŸŸฆ VER): from a likely win to P3 due to extremely unlucky VSC timing ๐ŸŸฅLEC's pace was within 0.1s of ๐ŸŸฆ VER's, yet he finished the race 24.8s behind him! What a pity, replacing Spa with this track โ˜น๏ธ
