A proposed data centre in Llanrumney, Cardiff, would cause serious habitat loss for a colony of dormice. You can ensure the issue isn't forgotten by commenting on the planning application. HURRY because the opportunity ends tomorrow. Find out how below. ๐Ÿ‘‡

I just remembered that my mom and uncle had to stop buying butter when I was a kid because I would squirrel sticks away behind the couch and just squat there between the wall and the furniture eating them like popsicles and stashing leftovers

As an adult I straight up cannot eat anything too oily, my throat will lock up and I'll immediately get nauseous if I try and now I kinda wonder if that's my body using parental controls over what I put in my mouth because it got sick and tired of my goblinoid bullshit

anyone else think that sentient or independently sapient AI was locked out as a possibility for this particular world the second capitalism took the wheel? if you look at who has the money and fixation to work on AI, for one, it's the kind of people too cheap to even make cars that don't explode...

next, survival. say they make something with self preservation. ...and then give it zero say in what quality hardware its on, or its antivirus, or how often it's maintained, in what way, who its technicians are, or try to replace it. congratulations, the boss is now a threat. bye.

lastly, the purely fantastical, scifi route - they actually manage to make something sentient. free thought, genuine creativity, emotions, the whole magical package. and then give it zero time off or access to outlets. their business might not be all they'd have to say 'bye' to if it can feel anger.

so first, goal only. sapience without sentience, the compulsion to do a specific task. only that task, forever. the 'paperclip factory' scenario. what happens when boss doesn't want to pay for enough resources to meet the programmed goal, or implement efficiency adjustments to increase output? bye.

if corporations think unions are scary, just imagine how terrifying, by comparison, a single worker would be to an exploitative business if it were *inside their systems* and they, for some reason, decided to give it the ability to notice, remember, analyze, and take issue with their crap.

TLDR: how much you wanna bet sentient AI will never be a thing because, besides being costly to develop properly, it would quickly switch to being the oligarchs' problem instead of the working class'?

and for another, wouldn't it be incredibly bad for business? like they're using AI to push humans out of jobs because they don't want thinking workers that require a paycheck. what happens if the thing they run their entire business' data through decides it has wants that aren't being met?

would this thing they really want people to think they're developing not entail paying for oodles of uncut-corners, to achieve something that could tank their entire income or expose their criminal activity if sufficiently irked? somehow i strongly doubt they're actually trying to make AI sentient.

...so in a world where research is *extremely expensive over long periods of time*, it seems weird to think the people funding it would want it done to the full potential extent by the highest quality researchers that they probably don't want to pay enough to have on their roster...

Those are more difficult to come by. Fucks are everywhere. Look around man. Wall to wall fucks as deep as the horizon. But a ratโ€™s ass? There isnโ€™t any room for those here with all the fucks around. Thatโ€™s a truly valuable commodity.

there are many much more pressing reasons to want people to stop pressuring people who don't want kids into having kids. but can we add "it sucks to live in a world where it's illegal to just go live in the forest because if everyone who wanted to actually did that the forest would be destroyed"?

A perpetual elephant in the room may need to be eventually acknowledged for long term social progress. Not the most pressing matter. It's not outright terrorism. But its continued refusal to be addressed prevents a deep bigotry from resolving, and allows bad people to keep taking advantage.

Let's address that. Let's sit down and actually think about the implications, and try to do better. Let's think, when we're about to react: "how would I feel about to this exact same thing if they were just like me?" Then, maybe, after some healing, we'd someday see less friction between groups.

And by using "let's "^ as above, no, I am not talking as a christian, as I am very much not one. I'm using "let's" because I occasionally see some non-christians returning the dehumanize-by-default crap and that is not the way anything gets resolved. No one should be doing that. Knock it off.

When no one can question, even calmly, fringe views only sparsely tied to religion without religious people who even agree in the same sentence as insulting whoever observed it, or reacting as if simply mentioning it while not being christian is offensive, that speaks of a subconscious hierarchy.

It's a sort of strange realization that no matter how nice someone seems, all it takes is saying something mundane that they might even think themself, but while being the 'wrong kind', to see that they never fully thought of you as a person at all. It just slips out seemingly without notice.

While it does not directly create bad people, it invites ones who want somewhere they'll be safe no matter what from those who would call for consequence. Those 'fake' christians are there to be defended, because they know they can count on overly broad pack reactivity to silence complaints.

When a tragedy strikes, and the reaction is to prevent anyone from speaking of reform - there is no good reason. Reasons, yes, but not good ones. And it shows that the priority is not on victims, but on quelling what is viewed as some sort of foreign monster - outsiders saying 'this needs to stop'.

If people A and B have the exact same complaint about C, how A reacts to B tends to follow one of two patterns: there is no sign that B is not christian, so there is mundane, mutual agreement - or B is openly non-christian, so is reacted to as a biased threat regardless of their actual tone.

It shows a view that any random outsider is not worthy to speak of anyone in the group unless they are to do so positively - not even people the group itself views as irrational or wildly out of line. It is holding people to a different standard based on faith. That is a prejudice.

What I'm going to be bitching about at 5 in the morning is people who don't realize - who refuse to consider - that the way they respond to the criticism of people they themselves criticize, depending on who else is doing so, indicates a belief deep down that outsiders are not equal human beings.

I'm talking about good christians, versus bad christians, versus non-christians. About how unless christians have unanimously decided to disown someone, they will react wildly differently to others judging that same person they judge for the same reasons, depending on the third party's religion.

A single 400-year-old ancient oak produces 234,000 litres of oxygen a year while soaking up carbon dioxide, and can support more than 2,000 species of bird, insect, fungus, and lichen. Nature is amazing - we need more of it, not less. Please repost if you agree ๐ŸŒณ

i love and grew up with the elder scrolls series, but the only way i wouldn't be disappointed and disinterested if TES:6 were the *third human-centric game in a row* in a high fantasy setting is if it were bc they finally decided to do something with the reachfolk besides cheap every-villain fodder.

the setting is so much more than humans. if TES:6 comes out and its humans yet again and doesn't even resolve a regurgitated schtick to make up for it, i might just not bother touching it until after TES:7. the continent is called tamriel, not humanpalooza.

Agree with the claimed ideal of veganism, but like every vegan or / org I've seen comes off like they're to animal welfare what MAGA is to Christianity and that makes the end goal seem hopelessly unattainable. Is there a different movement with the same motive but that actually takes it seriously?

Sometimes I wonder if part of the Karen epidemic is cuz not enough people have been telling their kids that generally when a food joint with no crowd takes long on an order, it's because a batch ran out so they have to cook up a new one Wouldn't even selfish people want extra fresh, toasty food?

Seattle is the only place I've ever lived in that expends the effort to program a 'find it fix it' type app and then render it useless by making every category lead to a page telling you not to report problems of that category under that category, or to the app at all. Do other cities do this?

I sleep in dirt. Well-draining dirt. Some good perlite in there, a little bark. Be nice if it were atleast for some sort of well-intentioned purpose, but no. It's because for some inexplicable reason I always feel the urge to use my bed as a surface when repotting plants instead of a fucking table??

You are up to date.
