For those new to BlueSky, I write novels and comics in multiple universes. My latest STAR WARS novel, THE LIVING FORCE, came out this year; I also wrote the first STRANGE NEW WORLDS novel, THE HIGH COUNTRY. And now BATMAN: RESURRECTION, the first original novel tying into the Tim Burton Bat-films.

I rooted our Clayface in the character’s Golden Age actor origins — along with a twist not seen in previous versions, to better mesh with Burton’s tragic-comic style. We also figured in that era we’d have seen more of practical-effects version of the character, more of a phantom-of-the-opera type.

We are underway at GalaxyCon St. Louis! Find us at table 1208. — and catch my “Legacy of Tim Burton’s Batman” presentation at 11:15 in panel room 2 upstairs! #galaxyconstlouis

I’m at GalaxyCon St. Louis today and all this weekend! Find me at table 1208. And check out my “Legacy of Tim Burton’s Batman” event Saturday at 11:15 in panel room 2! #galaxyconstlouis #batman #starwars #startrek

What John said. My tie-in writing has been full of challenges found nowhere else. But I keep going back. What, I get to borrow priceless classic cars and take all my friends on cross-country thrill rides as long as I get back to the garage exactly on time without a scratch? Just give me the keys!

Writing tie-ins is *a real fucking skill* and anyone who sneers at the people who do it can go piss up a rope. You think it's easy to write an entire novel to very specific order on an almost impossibly tight deadline? And have it be satisfying to read? Motherfucker, *you* try it. See how you do.

I had a Trek novel character‘s species change the day of the production deadline. I did a Mass Effect graphic novel about a character we couldn’t show. And my Kenobi novel had to reflect events in comics, games, children’s books, and more — and I wrote it not knowing if it would survive the buyout!

There are a zillion harder ways to make a living, but there aren’t many harder ways to write a book. It’s all part of the job. I just know I loved reading these books as a kid — and I love hearing from people who recognize the amount of work that goes into them now. We put our all into them!

This is sad to see. I cowrote the first three MASS EFFECT comics series with Mac Walters — and while my KNIGHTS OF THE OLD REPUBLIC comics series was its own thing, we definitely drafted on the game, with our characters Forrest Gumping their way through its backstory.

As much as it's not really a surprise, especially given the industry right now coupled with the Saudi sale, the news today still made me sad. BioWare joins other great studios of the past, with a legacy that will not soon be forgotten. 😔 www.forbes.com/sites/paulta...

This weekend, I'll be making my first comics convention appearance ever in St. Louis! Find me at GalaxyCon St. Louis, all three days in the creator area. And check out my "Legacy of Tim Burton's Batman" presentation Saturday at 11:15 a.m. in Panel Room 2 (231). #starwars #StarTrek #batman

Timothy Zahn was the last person I saw at New York Comic Con before heading out into the deluge on the last day — and in a few days you can find us both at GalaxyCon St. Louis! Somehow, it'll be my first comics convention in St. Louis ever. Find both of us there October 23-25! #galaxyconstlouis

Last stop leaving New York Comic Con — stopped in at the Spyscape spy museum, home of the Aston-Martin from GOLDENEYE. Was not permitted to drive it home.

Never accept a deal from a random Joker — but you can score one of the copies I set aside for Sunday for New York Comic Con. Find me at Table 2 in the Writers Block!

“This is Your Life” week continues at New York Comic Con as Dave Marshall, my editor on the latter half of KNIGHTS OF THE OLD REPUBLIC and all of my MASS EFFECT work, stopped by. We haven’t seen each other since those series ended — he’s the editor in chief at Dark Horse Comics now!

Another New York Comic Con delight — Stan Sakai, creator of one of my favorite comics, Usagi Yojimbo, just dropped by. First time we’ve seen each other in many years. Legend!

I’ve known Jason Liebig for years as an X-Men editor and also as the guy behind the Collecting Candy historical website — and now he’s often on TV as an expert on various Food Network and other shows. He found me here at #NewYorkComicCon at Writers Block Table 2 — and so can you, all day today!

And we are underway at New York Comic Con! Find me at Table 2 in the Writers Block, where we’ve got some rare editions we don’t normally have at shows! #starwars #startrek #batman #nycc

Took the NBC studio tour in advance of New York Comic Con and saw studio 8H where Saturday Night Live is produced — as well Seth Meyers’ studio and the one where they shot “That Was the Week That Was.” Even got some desk time: “And now let’s go to Larry ‘Bud’ Melman at the Port Authority terminal…”

Fun mail day: received the Scribe Award for BATMAN: REVOLUTION, which was named Best Original Novel - Speculative at San Diego this summer. I am further delighted that I finally figured out how to photograph it. (Black background, award literally sitting on your phone!) Find the book in stores now!

Mattel's handhelds led to Mattel's Intellivision; Intellivision's Utopia led to my obsession with Santa Paravia once I got my Apple ][; then Ultimas until the smart simulators arrived like President Elect and Earth Orbit Stations. Add a bunch of Civs and then the game that helped me quit my day job.

Since fiction became my job, I unwind now with games that include no story at all. I have a fleet of trucks in American Truck Simulator, run a publishing company in News Tower, and still play whatever the latest 4X game is that doesn't make my head hurt with details. R.I.P. Kerbal Space Program!

One more "Batman Day" post. Today a new hardcover of Batman '89 came out that includes a free download of the original Tim Burton film that inspired it! A labor of love from myself & the amazing @shamm.bsky.social w/beautiful colors by Leonardo Ito. If you missed it before, hope you'll check it out!

Whenever I abbreviate AMAZING SPIDER-MAN, it’s always “AMZ” because that was the code on Marvel’s subscription copies. Too late to change now.

This sea lion we saw at #DragonCon’s Georgia Aquarium night did a pretty good cosplay as Rodin’s “The Thinker.” If you’re thinking of what to do today at Dragon Con, it’s my day for signings — noon to 5 at the Sidestreet Book Market booth, 3201 in the Vendor Hall! Bucket of fish not included.

It’s Saturday at Dragon Con! Find me on the Star Trek/Star Wars panel at 1 in Marriott A706, signing from 3-5 at Sidestreet Book Market booth 3201, and on the Star Wars Comics panel at 5:30 in Mart 203BC! #starwars #startrek #batman

Thirteen years ago, I started work on STAR WARS: A NEW DAWN by getting suggestions and feedback from the REBELS producers Dave Filoni, Simon Kinberg, and Greg Weisman. Never got to meet or guve a copy of the final product to Greg, but finally took care of it at Dragon Con. Better late than never!

My thanks to #DragonCon for hosting me and Joe Quinones as we took fans into the world of Batman ‘89 comics and novels today! Saturday I’m on the Star Trek/Star Wars panel at 1 in Marriott A706, signing from 3-5 at Sidestreet Books booth 3201; then the Star Wars Comics panel at 5:30 in Mart 203BC!

Busy start to #DragonCon for me today! Signing sessions at Sidestreet Book Market Booth 3201 at 11 and 5; an IRON MAN comics panel at 2:30 in Mart 203BC; my BATMAN ‘89 event with Joe Quinones at 4 in Mart 203J; and Military SF writing at 7 in Westin Chastain DE. Whew!

Made it through the storms to arrive at #DragonCon in time for the Old Republic panel! My thanks to the panelists and all who attended. A full day Friday, with signings at 11-1 and 5-7 at Sidestreet Book Market booth 3201 and panels on Iron Man at 2:30, Batman ‘89 at 4, and Military Sci Fi at 7!

Heading now to Dragon Con! I'm at Sidestreet Book Market Booth 3201 all four days, and have my first Comics Track panels ever, including a #Batman '89 event with Joe Quinones. Also ones on writing Iron Man and Star Wars and a fun dive into my #StarTrek/#StarWars research. Come on by! #dragoncon

Racing to get ready for #DragonCon — find me at booth #3201 and many panels — but while there are a few minutes left, Gryph reminds me that today is the 12th anniversary of the release of #StarWars: A NEW DAWN from Random House Worlds. Huzzah!

This time next week I'll be at #DragonCon! I'm at Booth 3201 all four days, and have my first Comics Track panels ever, including a #Batman '89 event with @joequinones.bsky.social. Also ones on writing Iron Man and Star Wars and a fun dive into my #StarTrek/#StarWars research. Come on by! #dragoncon

Sorry to learn of the passing of Tim Curry. I always thought he was perfect as the deer-in-headlights RED OCTOBER officer that they wouldn't tell what was going on. Rest in peace.

Recently read DRAGNET: THE CASE OF THE COURTEOUS KILLER in its original 1958 Pocket Book form (surprisingly, an ebook exists). Richard Deming captures Jack Webb's patter pretty well, but here's a curiosity: he spells "mug shot" as "mugg shot" throughout. Was that spelling a thing?
