Yesterday in Brussels, Maria Noichl, MEP, and Ivan Ivanov ( @effat.org ) spoke at the screening of THE PICKERS at Cinéma Aventure. The public was engaged and moved by the film, the inspiring discussion and the hope that things can change for migrant workers in Europe.

The #backtothefuture march ended last night with a bang. But today it is The Pickers screening at Cinéma Aventure, in Brussels, at 19:00. We will be joined by Ivan Ivanov from @effat.org and Maria Noichl for a discussion afterwards. Please come meet us there!

The #BacktotheFuture March presses on! Our first screening of THE PICKERS in Maastricht ensured that the rights of migrants agricultural workers are at the heart of our demands. We'll walk with marchers to Hasselt this evening, getting closer to Brussels and holding the 2nd screening.

THE PICKERS is a journey to European fields where our fruit and vegetables are grown: in Southern Italy, Seydou from Mali is picking oranges. 🍊 He has no contract and is paid per crate. He lives in a self-built hut in a settlement without water and electricity. campaign.thepickers.org

With impact campaigns, you can easily and happily stay in an activist bubble. The challenge always is to reach beyond that. For THE PICKERS, we drove our refrigerated van with fairly picked oranges to the global headquarters of ALDI Süd in Salzburg to show them the film and talk about our campaign.

We took fair oranges to ALDI! 🍊 We contacted several major supermarkets asking them to meet with us as part of the Meet THE PICKERS Tour. ALDI South welcomed us to show the film and ask the question: ‘How can we ensure that our food is not produced through exploitation?’

Over 1000 people have added their names to our calls for a FAIR PICK. We are calling for 10 essential guarantees for migrant workers to ensure the people who pick the fruit and vegetables we enjoy each day are treated fairly. Find out more and add your name: campaign.thepickers.org/fairpick

Gilles Reckinger is an Austrian-based academic who has written two books on migrant workers in agriculture in Europe, including Bitter Oranges about African labourers in Calabria that explores many of the same themes as the documentary THE PICKERS that inspired our campaign.
