Language, Speech, and AI: FACTOR Summer School 2025 📅 28-30 July 2025 📍 Lancaster University, UK 💼 Theme: Fraud & the (Mis)use of AI Countless frauds and scams are being perpetrated all around us right now, and AI has made it easier than ever. And we'd like to fight back...

With that in mind, the world-leading FACTOR team is running a 3-day summer school to take you through the cutting-edge worlds of forensic linguistics, forensic speech science, and the ever-growing challenges that we now all face - the (mis) use of AI.

We'll talk about how easy it is to clone someone's voice, our telltale linguistic habits, and how good ordinary people are at distinguishing human language from AI. On the last day, you'll have the chance to turn detective with your own high-profile fraud case to crack.

🗣️ It's the last FACTOR talk of the academic year! Join us for Dr. Tharindu Ranasinghe's discussion of the challenges of offensive language detection in political discourse, including how human and machine moderators often disagree on what's considered offensive.

Upcoming @_FACTOR_LU talk 🚨 What’s the (copy)right way? 🚨 Join us for a talk exploring the legal challenges around large speech & language models 💡 Key questions: 1️⃣ Does developing these models risk copyright infringement? 2️⃣ What’s the copyright status of their outputs?

We're thrilled to announce our next talk: Sophie James (LUMS, SPS) and Prof. James Cronin (LUMS) will present: "Digital Dreamscapes & The Spectralisation Of Reality" Exploring digitally networked horror as a new frontier in dark tourism.

This talk explores how "creepypasta" and sites like r/nosleep reimagine reality with eerie, dreamlike qualities. Join us to discuss myths, simulacra, and the cybersecurity risks of online horror spaces.

🚨 Exciting news from FACTOR! 🚨 Dr. Hansi Hettiarachchi (Lancaster University) will explore how temporal word dynamics can inform event detection from social media streams. From crisis management to market analysis, learn how this approach tackles vast, unstructured data. Why is this important? ->

Most social media event detection tools rely heavily on statistics, often overlooking the meaning behind words. Dr. Hansi Hettiarachchi’s talk explores the semantic gaps in current methods and how new strategies can uncover critical insights from social media data streams. Interested? ->
