I do not think we should have a death penalty. I don't think it is any kind of deterrent. I think it's barbaric. I think it makes us all worse people. All of us. And we just don't have to do this to ourselves. We could abolish it, and we should.

it’s wild that the heritage foundation wrote in text that the assault on trans woman particularly in sports is their first step in their efforts to completely abolish all Title IX protections and liberals still don’t believe it’s about more than trans women in sports

Government policy based on the "pet peeve" of a reality TV guy.

Sean Duffy: "You know the stop/start button on your car? I hate that thing. Thank you Lee Zeldin! He's gotten rid of it and the first cars without the stop/start button are rolling off the line."

So, are all the free speech warriors going to sign an open letter about this, or nah?

Among other reforms, it cannot stand that the President can sue everyone all the time but never face any lawsuits or criminal charges himself because he’s president. www.nytimes.com/2026/08/21/u...

There was a concerted right wing attack on transgender rights, which leaked emails show, and which the Times will not report. But sure. It's "organic."

Yet another op-ed in prestige media pretending racism, sexism and transphobia among Republicans is a response to Democratic overreach www.nytimes.com/2026/08/14/o...

It’s impossible to overstate how openly Islamophobic many GOP voters I know have become. They are convinced that Mamdani and El-Sayed are posing as progressives to get in office and impose “Sharia law.” It’s completely unhinged but they view their fear as “rational” and “common sense.”

Paul Waldman@paulwaldman.bsky.social

"This campaign is the latest expression of the right’s eagerness to reject American pluralism — and their faith that the majority of voters share that goal and will respond to appeals to bigotry." My latest at Public Notice: www.publicnotice.co/p/trump-el-s...

This whole thread.

“Silly” is a good way to put it! There were excesses in 2020 but they were mostly low-stakes efforts by well-intentioned people to address real injustices. The excesses of the right during the same era were far more harmful. The reckoning we need now is about how elites lost sight of that.

I've been watching some former conservatives I know get radicalized by the Bad Place to an extreme level - they now think that there is a huge threat that Islamists will take over the country, that Mamdani is an existential threat to the US, and that the DSA will turn us all into commies

(contradictory views, I know). These were fairly normal Reaganite conservatives, Gen X and Boomers who are now virulent Islamophobes, scared of their own shadows. The degree to which they think they are simply expressing "common sense" is frightening.

Worth noting that these folks live in Texas where the state party has made Islamophobia their brand; it diverts attention from the fact that they are now requiring kids to read the Bible in school and for teachers to put up the Ten Commandments.

I taught in this area of Houston for many years; it is home to some of the most welcoming, hardest-working folks I’ve ever met. My heart breaks for this community.

A few simple ideas here for how we can improve literacy outcomes - it's not just about money, but spending money in the right ways so that students and schools can thrive.

The Second Lady is under the impression that stilted Youtube videos of uncharismatic jerks reading books to kids will solve our country's literacy crisis. Let's have some SOR peeps tell her what really make address declining literacy. #SOR

2/3 of the way through a Wheel of Time re-watch, and if Jeff Bezos is worried that people don't like him, he could spend a huge amount of his money to continue the series with the original cast. While he's at it, fund the Buffy reboot.

Weird. I lived in one of America’s most diverse cities for 17 years and felt joy and amazement at being surrounded by terrific neighbors. Maybe Sohrab is doing it wrong.

Joe Stieb@joestieb.bsky.social

Sohrab is turning that big dial that says racism.

Sanctuary cities are not "harboring illegal immigrants." They are making their cities safer, because when residents are afraid law enforcement will report them to ICE, they are less likely to report crimes.

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Banks: "It's a great idea, blocking int'l flights into sanctuary cities harboring illegal immigrants. Send those international flights to red state cities and the country will be safer and better off for it. I think Sec. Mullin is on to something here. This is a good idea to punish those cities."

Had someone argue with me today that a) the Chinese Exclusion Act wasn't racist; and b) America wasn't a country in the 100+ years when we didn't restrict immigration. Boy, white supremacy is a real head trip.

OK, but I live 40 minutes from Idaho and what works in Idaho absolutely would not work on the coasts... unless the coasts are down for creating a Christian nationalist separatist state.

I feel sick to my stomach waiting around to see what atrocity Trump has in mind for the people of Iran this evening. It's hard to fathom our other elected leaders aren't able to check him in any meaningful way. It's an indictment not just of voters but of our whole system. We're ruled by a mad king.

Sen. Padilla (D-CA) "¿Cómo puede el pueblo salvar el pueblo? Alzando nuestras voces, marchando, organizando nuestras comunidades, y votando." This is how we save ourselves: marching, organizing & voting. ✊🗳️ #SOTU2026 Together we can build a thriving economy & future. votolatino.org/vote

One important thing to note about this SOTU is that it's just a bad speech on top of everything. (Also, what is up with Trump's hair? I guess no one had the courage to tell him he had ablittle flag of hair poking up.)

I once coached a teacher who told his 4th graders they could make up statistics to put in their essays. So they would write something like, "According to friends dot com, 94% of kids like friends." Apparently, those kids grew up to work in the Trump administration.

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Peter Navarro: "Here's the statistic I want every American to understand -- 1% increase in rents for every 1 million illegals that cross our border. In the four years of Biden we had 20 million, so rents went up nationally 20% because Joe Biden left that border open."

DHS's repeated claim is that there is only chaos in MN because they aren't allowed "in the jails." Even that's a lie. Lies all the way down.

emptywheel@emptywheel.bsky.social

On top of everything else noxious about this appearance, Blanche is lying about cooperation from MN, as DOC set up a dedicated website to explain.

I know there will be a lot of video dissection and discussion of this morning's shooting. What I need the media to ask is why agents engaged a man who was peacefully filming them, and why they continued once he backed away.

Can anyone nominate someone for a Nobel Peace Prize? We should nominate the residents of the greater Twin Cities.

They clearly believed that Minneapolis would riot after they killed one of us. We didn’t, we organized. We followed them, we monitored them. We alerted our neighbors. We fought them in the courts. And now they’re desperate, so they’re brutalizing us, without a hint of legitimate government purpose.

So often, leaders invoke the science of reading to justify actions that have nothing to do with the science.

Rather than pundits urging all Democrats to move the center, how about urging candidates to believe in stuff. Progressives can win. Moderates can win. Just don't cynically triangulate yourself into things you don't believe.

The economy is great, which is why venerable cooking magazine Bon Appétit just re-featuded a recipe for burnt toast soup, and NYTimes Cooking is highlighting recipes that are "cheap and easy."
