With Sentinel-3C successfully launched on 15 September and returning its first images, data continuity for global fire and atmospheric monitoring is secured for years to come. 🛰️✨

bit.lyGlobal wildfires in 2025This animation follows a full year of fire activity worldwide in 2025, tracking where fires broke out and where their smoke travelled. It brings together three complementary views from Europe’s Earth observation programmes: 🔥 Copernicus Sentinel-3 detects active fires and measures their intensity from polar orbit, giving a global picture of where fires are burning. 🛰️ Meteosat-12, the first Meteosat Third Generation imager, watches Europe and Africa from geostationary orbit, capturing how fires and smoke plumes develop over the course of a day. 🌫️ The Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) provides aerosol data showing how smoke spreads through the atmosphere, often far beyond the fires themselves, affecting air quality thousands of kilometres away. Together, these data sets reveal the scale and reach of wildfires, and why continuous monitoring from space matters for emergency response, air quality forecasting and climate research.
