Are research papers content yet?

Ted Underwood@tedunderwood.com

Right now what researchers care about is publication; review is just an obstacle in the way. But actually human review is the scarce commodity. We need a world where ~anything can be published, but if it’s careful and potentially important, it gets expert human review and a second draft.

why i pay for the verge

There are blocks I won't go jogging down because it's just a wall of Ring cameras right up against the street with no setback and I do not need everyone and their grandmother recording me struggling at sunrise. www.theverge.com/podcast/8220...

3/ Academia enables “research as play.” • But how do we balance that with: • Real funding constraints • Recruiting top students • But how to compete with 600-person industry teams? By picking the right problems

4/ Panelists’ spicy ideas: 🌶️ • 8 page SIGMOD papers + a YouTube explainer • More industry internships to understand "the real world" • Host “Data + X” workshops in other fields—NOT at SIGMOD

2/ DB folks still have a massive edge: • Declarative thinking • Separation of logical + physical • Deep systems chops • But we’re not always in the rooms where AI decisions are made. That needs to change.

I was delighted to deliver a keynote "A Decade of Systems for Human Data Interaction" at HILDA Workshop. I argue that HILDA is about providing guarantees for **user-facing experiences** -- critical to support the rise of vibe coding and LLMs that are eating UX.

Along with Raul Castro Fernandez, I also co-organized a lively SIGMOD panel exploring the future of academic database research.

Physical Visualization Design by Yiru Chen et al., lets interface designers focus purely on the visual experience and user interaction of visualization interfaces. PVD automatically assesses if a design can meet interactivity goals synthesizes the client-server architecture to deploy it.

Highlights: John and Luis received the 10-year Test-of-Time Award for their 2015 paper k-shape Lampros, myself, & friends at Celonis won DEEM Best Paper for Hierarchical Text Segmentation using LLMs & Best Industry Demo for semantic taxonomy-driven prompt optimization.

software craftsmanship in action.

Ultorg 2.0 is released, with several user-requested features! With conditional formats, you can color rows or cells, or "strike through" a row, based on values or an arbitrary formula condition. (1/6)

Working on HILDA@sigmod2025.bsky.social keynote slides. Thinking about human data interaction, AI, and a virtuous cycle. Looking forward to seeing folks in a week!

Now it's the professors using ChatGPT. Students aren't happy about it. I talked to professors. I talked to students. I read the scathing reviews on Rate My Professors. Here you go: www.nytimes.com/2025/05/14/t...

Almost every db faculty that has received an nsf award ad benefitrd from hector and sylvia’s work. Well deserved!

🏆 The 2025 SIGMOD Contributions Award goes to Hector Munoz-Avila and Sylvia Spengler Citation: "For outstanding service to the database community by initiating and supporting research, and for increasing awareness globally about the importance of database innovation."

Excited for Phil Cascado from Outropy to join our class to talk about systems problems that arise when building agentic systems for real. AI is great for demos and hard for products. Class: W6113.github.io

Really excited for shreya to speak about docETL, and in general LLM powered data analysis and the role of agent-based optimization, in our graduate seminar Agents For Real Class website: w6113.github.io

Exciting opportunity at the Columbia DAPLab! We are looking to hire a postdoc to work on AI Agents at the intersection of systems, AI, and HCI for Fall 2025. 🔥 Check out the details in the job post here: daplab.cs.columbia.edu/positions #ColumbiaUnversity #AI #AIAgents

The disparity between the ease to write an EO and the effort needed to push against it seems like a problem.

BREAKING: Attorneys General of CA, NY, AZ, CO, CT, DE, HI, IL, ME, MD, MA, MI, MN, NV, NC, NJ, NM, OR, RI, VT, WA, WI, and D.C. are suing Trump for his budget freeze. That 0 GOP AGs are joining, despite the fact that this freeze hurts their constituents the most, speaks to how MAGA is 100% a cult.

Mechanisms for user agency and control over their data will continue to grow in importance and visibility!

New post: Databases are more powerful than they've ever been, but the average person's relationship with their data is in the worst state it's ever been. Your data is stored in databases you don't control, and should instead be stored in your own personal database. blog.marcua.net/2025/01/05/m...

Just did a calculation of our lab's time from project conception to publication (e-pub) over the past x years. We're averaging 3.5 years from the first idea to acceptance. About 6-9 months of this is review time. Don't know how typical this is but good reality check esp. for trainees.

I asked my students in introduction to databases to create database memes. Here are some bangers: I remove all data redundancy, Might not preserve some functional dependency, Cluttered databases I do reform, 'Am your good ol' friend Boyce-Codd Normal Form.

Values need to involve a tradeoff. If they don't come with a cost you're willing to accept then they're not actionable. e.g., "Move fast and break stuff" = 🔥 "Move fast with stable infra" = 😐

Planning and arguing for a project (whether a grant or paper) is hard. One reason is that writing and speaking is a linear process, while the arguments for a project is a graph. This blog post describes a mental model and its implications to writing. eugenewu.net/writing/2024...

Thanks for the shoutout! Our perspective is first figure out how to separate complexity from the data out of the visual representation before trying to attribute complexity to the person.

After reading more, I like this paper a lot - makes me ponder some of the assumptions we have in evaluating vis On the complexity of vis tasks front, I like this recent paper (from @eugenewu.net and Remco Chang) as a start at trying to decompose tasks into operations: arxiv.org/abs/2407.06404
