I finally got a production Tangara! …couldn’t resist swapping in the aluminium back from my prototype unit, but it still feels special I love working on open source hardware with my friends 🧡

if I ever decide to write a talk for EMF camp or whatever it will likely be titled “you probably shouldn’t run a manufacturing operation out of your bedroom, here’s how”

I’ve developed a good relationship with an Irish cable braiding factory for work in the last ~year, and I’m so tempted to do a run of lesbian pride flag coloured mains cabling…

they’re so nice, I just post them a big roll of cable and an email, they say “that’ll be £30 c:”, and then they post it back the day after.. literally unheard of service quality in european manufacturing

computer touchers with “automation autism” have it so much easier than machinery touchers with automation autism, only one of these makes you want to build a factory production line in your bedroom…

it’s amazing (read: depressing) how many otherwise decent cis allies have passively absorbed the whole “most trans women work in tech or at defence contractors earning 6 figures” trope..

In a better world medication prescriptions would include an extra month’s supply occasionally, to store as an “off-site backup” (if you do DIY HRT you should already be doing this, or at least communicating with friends about what you can share in an emergency)

filling the unused areas of my JLC solder paste stencils with patterns to use as nail stencils 💅 (commercial nail art stencils are basically the same thickness)

I think we should all start calling more workshops “engineeriums” again.. 💭 calling my bedroom an engineerium because it contains: - many machines and tools for engineering - an engineer you can come and look at like a fish in an aquarium

this past ~month has taught me (once again) that having time / energy to do my silly little side projects is critical for my ability to feel like an actual person...

somehow found myself looking at one of the places 4chan transfems migrated to (don’t ask), and wow these women just need to meet other weird nerdy autistic women who happen to be cis.. they literally struggle with all the same things 😵‍💫

growing up with an accepting friend group entirely made up of socially ostracised strange / nerdy cis girls really immunised me against the worst species of brainworm..

I see people joke about transfem engineers all being talented, and there is truth in that, but the reason is that gaining a reputation for hyper-competency is the only form of job security we can get.. also survivorship_bias.png

hell, I think trans women should be allowed to be weird and unlikeable without starving, but I can’t even quantify just how far outside the overton window that view is..

It’s why I feel more secure as a freelancer, my clients hire me because of my reputation for being extremely good.. but it’s exhausting, and I desperately wish just being “pretty good” wouldn’t mean being disposed of by society…

I’m actually excited about touching a computer again?? it’s been 25 years… (a silly little bricked DECT phone that runs android 4.3 I’m going to try and fix, and then do silly mods to)

Generally speaking I do need AI boosters to understand that I’ve lost my career and future plans entirely to AI-based cost cutting. so any time you’re talking about tech you have to understand people whose livelihoods were destroyed by a thing they didn’t choose to adopt they’re gonna be prickly lol

procrastinating doing proper research on FCC certification for Witch Staff because I think there’s a 50% chance the FCC no longer meaningfully exists by the time we’re at that stage..

messily eating a mango because I was too lazy to cut it up and in doing so reminding myself that a friend is getting bottom surgery soon..

weighted blankets are not enough, I need to sleep under at least 2G of acceleration, I must become the weighted blanket someone invent fusion torch ships for this purpose pls

neurotypical people who don’t remove their in-ear wireless headphones while talking out of laziness have unknowingly done so much for autistic people who wear them all the time for the noise cancelling.. thank you for your service 🫡

so Stratasys won their lawsuit against Bambu for infringing patents that cover basic 3D printing techniques every modern printer firmware / open source slicer uses… the 3D printing industry is going to get pretty interesting for a while!

a lot of men seem to have a definition for “hard scifi” that can mostly be summed up as “almost all the characters are men, and said men get to feel smart about solving engineering problems” regardless of how realistic the technology actually is..

I really liked Project Hail Mary (book and film), but it is basically this… and if you read the author’s prior book you’ll realise the only reason he’s not extremely weird and creepy about women in PHM is because there aren’t (m)any in it..

as a workshop safety officer you should be mindful in using environment-appropriate language: "awww did you have a little booboo?" ❎️ "awww did you have a little industrial accident?" ✅️

that one devboard I bought on a whim 6 years ago because the feature-set looked neat saved me a week of waiting for parts on a project today.. it can actually happen!!

I stopped buying devboards soon after because I felt bad about not making use of them… so, sorry future Erin 6 years from now, suck it, wait a week

I've been informed Dyson have now recalled the toothbrush (less than 2 weeks after launch) ..because it wasn't waterproof.. lol

dyson came up with one good thing 17 years ago (cheap way of making a high power BLDC motor) and since then seemingly their only goal has been figuring out how to put it inside weirder and more unsuitable devices? headphones?? a fucking toothbrush???

when you verify a friend’s signal safety number in person you have to give them a little kiss on the top of their head after, it won’t work properly if u don’t
