Trump: "Are you a sick person?" Reporter: "Not that I know of, Sir" One of the most galling things about the present moment is the spineless, yellow-bellied obsequiousness of the press US democracy cannot ultimately survive with a such servile, oligarch-controlled media

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

😳 Trump loses it and SNAPS at a string of reporters, says Ilhan Omar might "go to jail," calls Somalia "a shit house," and boasts that thanks to a new program he announced today Americans "will make millions of dollars by turning others in" during absolutely deranged Oval Office event Supercut:

I feel like this car illegally using the bus only lane to drop off a person in a tie-dye shirt is such a perfect encapsulation of Berkeley's worst tendencies

I don't understand why it's still so hard for @bart.gov to keep passengers informed. Was on a train that kept having a mech issue, stopping/starting, doors opening/closing, and then we proceeded very slowly to MacArthur. Single muffled announcement, then 10 min later "train going out of service"

I'm going to ask this question again: If social media (rather than corporate legacy media) are the reason we are in this mess right now, then why is it older people (who remain most reliant on corporate legacy media) who are still most supportive of Trump?

There few better encapsulations of everything wrong with the United States than the fact that the Trump regime is promoting a livestream of a human getting shot to death at the same time that they claim drag shows are corrupting the nation's children If you support this, you are all but beyond help

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Q: Did you personally authorize or approve the livestreamed execution? TRUMP: Did I approve? Absolutely I did

It makes me almost unspeakably angry that we hear how it's a huge imposition for people to have to park a block from their destination (bus riders typically walk several) or to have to *GASP* pay for parking, and meanwhile people walking and riding bikes routinely pay with their bodies and lives

BREAKING: A driver fled after striking two elderly pedestrians in Berkeley on Wednesday night, causing major injuries, according to preliminary reports.

[insert Maya Angelou believe them the 1st time quote]

Trump: "Let them hit a missile into San Diego or Los Angeles on the way. You want to see a horror show? Let them hit San Diego. Let them hit Los Angeles. You want to see some bad things happen?"

The new PA systems on @bart.gov trains are a vast improvement, but they don't help much ᵢ𝒻 ₜₕₑ... ᵦₐᵣₜ... ₒₚₑᵣₐₜₒᵣ [ᵤₙᵢₙₜₑₗₗᵢ𝓰ᵢᵦₗₑ] ₘᵤₘᵦₗᵢₙ𝓰 ₗᵢₖₑ [ᵤₙᵢₙₜₑₗₗᵢ𝓰ᵢᵦₗₑ] ᵣₑ𝒸ₑₙₜ ₜᵥ [ᵤₙᵢₙₜₑₗₗᵢ𝓰ᵢᵦₗₑ]

I'm struck by how people who fight tooth and nail against removing a single parking spot because "seniors and people with disabilities" never seem to bring the same level of passion for making buses more frequent, reliable, or speedy People too old, disabled or poor to drive are invisible to them

I hope y'all haven't gotten used to having coffee, chocolate, clothing, computers, and consumer goods in general

Trump suggests he wants to cut off almost all trade: "We're gonna very very self-sufficient very soon"

PS remember when a Democratic president saying something was 5 million dollars when it was actually like 4 million was an all-day press feeding frenzy?

Playing with new ways to visualize my Berkeley rent data. What this is trying to say is that in summer 2026, the 33 apartments that had previously been leased in summer 2021 typically rented for 14% less. I started collecting this in 2022, that's why it is sparse on the right.

Let them eat concrete, pulp, and road salt.

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

SUSAN COLLINS: I was successful in getting road salt removed from the Canada tariff list TROY JACKSON: What about everything else? We can't eat road salt

The fact that the oligarch-owned media will treat this as "no big deal" "Trump being Trump" and likely move on less than 24 hours later should be, like, the millionth last straw convincing you that you should assiduously avoid watching/reading any corporate media

Kyle Griffin@kylegriffin1.bsky.social

Trump suggested tonight that Iran could "take out" American cities: "It's a small price to pay for keeping the world safe, keeping our country safe. They can take out a city. Let them take— let it, let them take out Los Angeles. Let them take out San Diego. This is a very small price to pay."

This incredibly incisive post is a great example of why I don't subscribe to the notion that social media is *the reason* people are so misinformed It appears that the Atlantic, perhaps knowingly, is misleading the public about this truck driver's politics to create a preferred narrative—shocker

Marisa Kabas@marisakabas.bsky.social

It’s confusing that @theatlantic.com described this man as a “a lifelong Democrat who had voted for Trump for the first time in 2024” who when these are some of his very easily findable FB posts:

When someone says supply and demand doesn't apply to housing, here's a fun thing to ask them: If additional higher cost housing makes all housing more expensive, then we should be able to lower prices by destroying high cost housing. So why not destroy the most expensive 5% of homes each year?

We hear over and over again from Berkeley NIMBYs that new apartments are vacant and that we have nothing to show for all the homes we've built They are flat wrong on both counts and Berkeley has extensive, City-collected data to prove it But they keep repeating the lies—like climate change deniers

Jeff Baker@jwbee.bsky.social

Rents for new leases of regulated 1-bed and studio apartments in Berkeley ticked down a bit in September '26, sequentially and annually, to a median $2098/month. That is the lowest of any September in a decade. Even in nominal dollars, that's lower than 2019.

Putting the "complex" in homeless industrial complex

Liam Dillon@liamjdillon.com

Years ago I interviewed Houston Mayor Annise Parker who told me one of the main reasons the city was able to cut homelessness by so much is she forced all the governments and nonprofits into a room and made them use the same data system. Meanwhile in LA www.latimes.com/california/s...

Green energy accelerating. We're testing vaccines for cancer and the common cold. Gen Z is very empathetic and good at healthily sharing feelings. Mass timber is a lower carbon building method. People are less lead poisoned now. (Some) AVs are safer drivers than humans. Lab grown meat is coming.

dame@dame.is

i challenge you to post one optimistic take or belief today on bluesky this needn’t be toxic positivity, just good ol’ run of the mill optimism/hope in the face of a torrential downpour of doom

Today in San Francisco I saw an ABDL person loudly helping clear a crowd of furries so that someone wearing a strappy leather getup using a wheelchair could get to the sidewalk ramp I was trying to think of a fun follow-up comment, but I think I'll just let this stand as a BlueSky Rorschach test

If more people knew engineering, perhaps they would not have bought into Elon Musk's hyperloop and various other claims, would have seen him for the fraud that he is, and we wouldn't be here right now A challenge of modernity is that a keeping a republic requires well-rounded education for all

If State Senator Wiener doesn't win this seat, he should primary Adam Schiff Or become the Joker

Clara Jeffery@clarajeffery.bsky.social

Absolutely scorching endorsement, bringing serious heat for Weiner and against Chan, but a blast furnace at Pelosi for her role in this race and her true reasons for it. Never read an editorial this heated in Chron www.sfchronicle.com/opinion/edit...

Counterpoint: The housing crisis is going crazy in places where homes are treated as *anybody's* investment vehicle It doesn't matter if it's a hedge fund or just your grandma, treating housing as an appreciating investment is fundamentally incompatible with long-term housing affordability

Brian Goldstone@brian-goldstone.bsky.social

An 87-year-old woman lived in the same Madrid apartment for 70 years. Then a real estate firm bought it and forced her out. The housing crisis is global because the underlying logic is the same: your home is someone else's investment vehicle.

A good investment has to grow faster than inflation If housing costs are growing faster than inflation, they are by definition becoming less affordable over time Ownership housing should be considered a depreciating asset whose benefits are stability and the freedom to renovate, not an investment

By the way, this is also how many homelessness activists operate Are they out there protesting in Moraga or Tiburon where homeless shelter and services essentially don't exist and the towns would kick out most homeless people faster than you can blink? Nope, they're suing Berkeley over and over

Perhaps it is the least worst or only physically/financially feasible option, but I must confess I still have some pretty deep skepticism that controlled burns in the middle of an urbanized area are the optimal way to reduce fuel loads But I'm open to being told I'm wrong and outside my lane

This is your regular reminder that only about 20% of California's water use is for urban uses; of that 20%, something like 30 to 40% is for lawns and pools; and people living in dense cities use much less water than people in suburban mcmansions

Snowden St.@snowden.st

Folks are welcome to try and prove it otherwise, but "free migration within the country" and "barely managed water policy, especially in the light of climate change" are inherently in a kind of conflict.

I might actually have *understated* how much of CA urban water goes to landscaping and pools (mostly landscaping) Some estimates put it up at 40-50%, but these numbers are hard to pin down Either way, the idea that people should need government licenses to move because of water is bollocks

I would very much like to make at least one $20,000 bet with anyone willing to sign a legally binding agreement that AI will not end or take control of human civilization in 2027.

Unpopular opinion: people who take buses deserve places to sit, and until we start forcing drivers to let homeless people sleep in their back seats, bus riders (who are also often low income) shouldn't be treated as second class citizens who are expected to bear the full brunt of bad housing policy

There is very little in this world that makes me more cynical about our ability to deal with climate change (or do anything hard, really) than the people who were chanting "shame" at the Berkeley City Council meeting just now because the City Council approved a bike lane in July

Eric Panzer reposted

With Trump unleashing insane tirades against regulating AI, Obama just urged Dems to adopt a comprehensive position on it, warning that failure to act now will be "dangerous." Trump's malevolence has given Dems a big opening. They should seize on it. 1/ (new piece) newrepublic.com/article/2154...

newrepublic.comThe Real Reason Obama’s Harsh Warning to Dems About AI Is So UnnervingMost Democrats have more or less the right position on AI. But their arguments are way too narrow to dramatize the real stakes. They should aim higher.

In about two months, we'll have another interesting test of the degree to which this is true of typical Berkeley voters (at least in certain parts of town)

Ian@woolie.meowmeow.city

I love Berkeley, people will build their entire politics around the idea that mitigating climate change requires radically restructuring the world economy, but they draw the line at a 12 story building a few blocks away or replacing some parking spaces with bike lanes.

American politicians believing that their progeny have a special successional right to their elected office like they're descended from the unbroken bloodline of Elendil, High King of Arnor and Gondor is very bad, actually

Sam@samd.bsky.social

the thing about this race that nobody is talking about is that most of these seemingly nonsensical endorsements are downstream from how Nancy Pelosi tried to clear the field for her daughter but Scott running ruined that plan so now she’s on the warpath against him
