Appreciate the sentiment, but the internet is Where Things Are. Obviously, including this article. I think *engaging* less is where it’s at. Like the radical blocking practiced here. Training your mind to be less reactionary to what it sees online. Accepting that It Isn’t Everything.

It’s actually even worse than that - the LAFD budget is only 1/3 of the LAPD’s. LAFD and the county FD have to fundraise for supplies while the LAPD collects millions in overtime. Inmate firefighters, until recently, were not able to be hired as firefighters once released.

Wait. So the LA City Council slashed the FD's budget to give to the LAPD and now the city is on fire and inmates are now being forced to fight the fire? Bullets don't fight fires, y'all. We're literally police-stating ourselves to death.

The six year old likes football so we watch football now which is weird for me since I’m a month away from 40 and probably watched fewer than ten whole football games in my life. Anyway, Go Ravens!

I’ve been playing Stardew in downtime this winter break because the break is long and all my other games stress me out. Observations: 1) I can let this game stress me out too, but I won’t 2) Its hard not to chase money and “just enjoy the simple things.” Thickly ironic. 3) Still chill

Stardew Valley may as well be instant nostalgia cream for when I’d play SNES games in emulators in my teenage bedroom. Infinite fun with time just melted to oblivion. Apply directly to the forehead.

My other video games either I’ve played through 90+% of the story and don’t have the multi-hour block of time and energy to beat it (Tears of the Kingdom, Forbidden West) or are roguelike where I’ve plateaued (Hades II, slay the spire)

Notably the memory of that collective action is being kettled towards mask mandates and school lockdowns rather than, say, cutting child poverty in half, ceasing all evictions and student debt payments, and a mass uprising against racist police violence

The pandemic forced Americans to think and act collectively and while there were amazing examples during peak COVID of all kinds of people doing just that, a majority of Americans came away thinking “that sucked; I don’t want to have think about other people.”

Drinking Prisoner out of respect for the host, but let me be clear in this safe space: it’s a terrible wine. Lots of Barolo, Bordeaux is the same price or cheaper, and tastier by a mile.

Better it than me; I’d probably forget my sunglasses like I ALWAYS do.

On Dec. 24, NASA's Parker Solar Probe will get closer to the sun than any human-made object ever has before. Astrophysicist Nour Rawafi hopes the data it collects will help solve the sun’s mysteries.

It’s not perfect yet but I spent barely an hour with ChatGPT today making a script that turns the 10 manual steps needed to get the data in the right place for processing into something that’s almost a single button push.

This is the kinda thing I’ve been tasked with because my job responsibilities changed suddenly. But it’s also the kind of problems my brain likes to say “let’s make this as dumbly easy as possible with computers”

To everyone in a similar scenario: the tactic my doctor's office has taught me is to ask, in writing, for: 1) the name, board specialty, and license number of the doctor making the determination the treatment was not medically necessary;

Our Thai place had an evening like that one episode of The Bear, apparently. Too many tickets. Our order got lost. I’m not terribly mad. Hungry a bit, but they’re in worse shape than I am. I’ve got wine and snacks. Thinking about whether shrugging this off means I’m in the minority
