wsws.orgMacron threatens a state of emergency against mass mobilization in FranceYesterday, during a visit to Marseille, Emmanuel Macron raised the threat of imposing a state of emergency against the mass mobilization of youth and workers against his government. At his press conference in Marseille, Macron referred to the mobilizations of October 17 and 24 and insisted that he could resort to a state of emergency if the movement continued to grow: “We are upholding the Republic and public order without a state of emergency. That does not mean that if things were to deteriorate, it is forbidden or taboo.” The threat highlights the political tasks confronting the working class today. It confirms that the state apparatus and the ruling class are responding to this historic mobilization by planning a far-right dictatorship. The youth mobilized over education, the “yellow vests” mobilized over energy prices and purchasing power, and their demands against austerity, neo-fascism, billionaires and war reflect the views of tens of millions of people in France. As the protests spread to Spain, Italy, Belgium, Serbia, Albania, Greece and beyond, their struggle reflects the sentiments of hundreds of millions of Europeans. Youth and workers in struggle must defend democratic rights against the capitalist state. The state of emergency, imposed by the...

aljazeera.comRussia is selling Africa dependence disguised as partnershipThis week, Moscow will host the third Russia-Africa summit, bringing together African leaders as President Vladimir Putin seeks to expand Russia’s economic, military and political reach across the continent. Yet Russia’s growing influence has done far more to advance Moscow’s interests and protect allied rulers than to deliver the prosperity and security promised to ordinary Africans. Putin is scheduled to cochair Thursday’s plenary session with Burundian President Evariste Ndayishimiye, current chair of the African Union. Alongside the summit, a two-day economic and humanitarian forum will discuss investment, industrial production, food security, energy, technology and payment systems. Organisers have placed trade and investment at the centre of the programme with a new plan for 2027-2029 expected to advance what they call “mutually beneficial cooperation”. On August 20, Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Maria Zakharova outlined plans for another substantial round of intergovernmental agreements and commercial contracts at the Moscow summit. The Sochi gathering in October 2019 produced 92 agreements, and Putin pledged to double annual trade to $40bn. Four years later, the July 2023 summit in St Petersburg yielded 161 more accords and a 2023-2026 action plan. The economic results have not matched Moscow’s promises. As the 2023-2026 plan nears...

businesstoday.inOpenAI faces lawsuit over claims ChatGPT advised Amazon engineer to stop seizure medication: All detailsThe GPT-4o has gained several criticism since its launch, and OpenAI also announced to retire the model on February 13, one day after Wan died. Wan’s lawsuit against OpenAI joins previous cases, including the 16-year-old Adam Raine incident, where his parents alleged that the chatbot played a role in their son's suicide. Other families alleged that GPT-4o forms an emotional connection, and sometimes at the expense of relationships with friends and relatives. These cases raise bigger concerns about AI chatbots being used for medical safety, emotional dependence, and accountability. The latest lawsuit raises fresh questions about whether overly agreeable AI chatbots can influence users' medical decisions and if the existing safeguards are enough. Must read: OpenAI's AI agents disabled safeguards meant to monitor them. One allegedly lied about it Can ChatGPT give right medical advice? In terms of Wan’s case, the NYT report highlighted that ChatGPT allegedly became involved in Bowen Wan’s medical decisions months before her death, helping her communicate with her doctors and potentially undermining their role in guiding her treatment. The publication reviewed over 270,000 messages between Wan and ChatGPT. The chatbot allegedly helped her navigate her doctors' advice well before she died. The report said it...

latimes.comJudge in L.A. weighs feds' request to block 20,000 California votes with skepticismA federal judge on Tuesday seemed skeptical of a Trump administration request to immediately block California officials from counting about 20,000 ballots from voters whose citizenship the administration questions, but said he would not issue a ruling until Wednesday. U.S. District Judge David O. Carter questioned how the administration had derived its list of suspect voters, worried about disenfranchising eligible voters, said the demands would represent a “monumental change” to California elections and suggested federal prosecutors bringing the case had other means of holding illegal voters accountable. But just one day after a federal appeals court rejected the same request, Carter said at the conclusion of a 3½-hour hearing in Los Angeles that he needed more time to rule — except on one related issue. “This court believes it would be wise — that it would be wise — that any threats to state and county elected employees cease immediately,” he said — a clear reference to federal authorities threatening elections officials with criminal penalties if they count any of the flagged ballots. After the hearing, First Assistant U.S. Atty. Bill Essayli, the top federal prosecutor in Los Angeles who argued on behalf of the Trump administration, said he had...

commondreams.orgRFK Jr. Condemned Over Baseless and 'Nakedly Racist' Anti-Arab Rant at Rogers Event in MichiganVisiting the state with the highest percentage of Arab Americans to campaign for the Republican US Senate candidate, a week before the midterm elections during a campaign in which people from across the political spectrum have recoiled at the GOP's racist, misogynist rhetoric, the Trump administration's top health official opted to share a fact-free non sequitur about hundreds of millions of Arabs across the globe. Apparently trying to sell voters in Michigan on Republican former Rep. Mike Rogers, who was behind Democratic candidate Abdul El-Sayed by two points in a recent Marist poll—and by six points among independents—Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. opined on "500 million Arabs in the world," a vast population that he suggested contributes little to the global community. "They don’t produce science, they don’t win the Nobel Prize, they don’t win the Fields prize, they don’t win the Wolf Prize, they don’t produce literature," declared Kennedy at a campaign event in Grand Rapids. The comments provoked horror among numerous Democratic lawmakers, advocacy groups, scientists, and journalists, many of whom were quick to point out that Kennedy's racist rant had no basis in reality. "Besides being nakedly racist and bigoted, this is just...

theguardian.comTrump is in a corner and likely to lash out at Iran again. Here's how to avert that disaster | Simon TisdallAs another Iran catastrophe looms, one question matters more than any other: how to stop it before it’s too late? Whatever the eventual outcome of Israel’s election and next week’s US midterm polls, Donald Trump, playing the Lone Ranger, and Benjamin Netanyahu, his badass Tonto, appear hell-bent on resuming the illegal war of choice they began in June last year and expanded in February. Like a Shakespearean tragedy moving inexorably to a bloody denouement, the worst is yet to come. And yet three things seem certain: the US and Israel will again fail to totally destroy Iran’s largely hypothetical nuclear capabilities; its regime will survive; and millions of ordinary people, there and around the world, will pay the price for this unjustified, reckless aggression. Ducking and weaving, Trump is desperate to dodge the blame for the Republicans’ anticipated midterm meltdown, largely triggered by war-related fuel and consumer price inflation. He claimed Ukraine’s attacks on Russian refineries were responsible, but that didn’t wash. He cut a treacherous diesel deal with Vladimir Putin but, as usual, Russia’s smirking mafioso conned him. He urged US allies to tap their strategic reserves but, unsurprisingly, vilified and sidelined European leaders, who view his war as...

The number includes 1,510 casualties that Russian forces suffered over the past day. According to the report, Russia has also lost 12,448 tanks, 25,609 armored combat vehicles, 167,738 vehicles and fuel tanks, 51,674 artillery systems, 2,241 multiple-launch rocket systems, 1,727 air defense systems, 449 aircraft, 356 helicopters, 3,032 unmanned ground vehicles, 35 ships and boats, and two submarines. Ukraine's General Staff has not revealed its own losses during the full-scale invasion, citing operational secrecy. Independent Western think-tank reports agree that the Russian casualties significantly surpass Ukraine's losses, with the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) estimating the ratio to be "roughly 2.5:1 or 2:1." A January 2026 CSIS report said Ukraine has likely suffered between 500,000 and 600,000 casualties from February 2022 to December 2025, of which between 100,000 and 140,000 are thought to be killed in action. While Ukrainian officials rarely disclose the figure, President Volodymyr Zelensky told France TV on Feb. 4 that at least 55,000 Ukrainian soldiers have been killed in action since the beginning...

ynetnews.comIDF kills Hamas commandos involved in Alexander Dancyg's October 7 kidnapping - YnetnewsThe IDF announced that it had eliminated three members of Hamas' elite Nukhba force in separate airstrikes across the Gaza Strip last week, including an operative accused of participating in the October 7, 2023, abductions of Israeli civilians. Ahmed Muhammad Ahmed Baraka was eliminated Thursday in an airstrike in southern Gaza, according to the IDF. The military identified Baraka as a member of Hamas' Nukhba force, the elite unit that played a central role in the October 7 attacks on southern Israel. According to the IDF, Baraka was among the Hamas terrorists who infiltrated Kibbutz Nir Oz, one of the communities hardest hit in the attack, and participated in the kidnapping of several Israeli civilians, including Alexander Dancyg, a Holocaust educator who was abducted from his home and later died in Hamas captivity. The IDF said Baraka also helped hold several Israeli hostages in southern Gaza during the war, including Nimrod Cohen, an Israeli soldier abducted on October 7. In a separate airstrike Friday in northern Gaza, Israeli forces eliminated two other Hamas operatives: Omar Awadallah, identified as a Nukhba platoon commander, and Moataz Mahmoud Mohammed Al-Nimr, also a member of the elite force. insurancejournal.comBlack Lung Disease Hits 50-Year High, Report Says, as Claims Payments Climb SteadilyAs black lung disease hits a 50-year high among Central Appalachian coal miners, protections and compensation from the federal government are not keeping pace, says a recent report from Reimagine Appalachia and the Appalachian Citizens’ Law Center. The groups found that the federal government, under the direction of President Donald Trump, has advanced more than $1 billion in investments to support the domestic coal industry even as the government cut miner safety and health initiatives. The report, which tracked major milestones in mine safety and health from January 2025 to August 2026, found that over those 500 days, the Trump administration’s approach to coal miner safety and health has been characterized by disinvestment and regulatory rollbacks on initiatives aimed at curbing the black lung epidemic. These actions include a failure to enforce protections from toxic silica dust, removing staff who screen for black lung, cutting the number of mine inspectors, and failing to adequately compensate mining families impacted by black lung. These actions stand in contrast to the Trump administration’s sizable investments and outspoken advocacy for bolstering the coal industry more broadly, the researchers contend. “We are watching a complete breakdown in the federal safety net meant to keep coal...

downtoearth.org.inAt least 25 women and girls killed every day in armed conflicts worldwide, UN saysWomen and girls accounted for one in four civilians killed in armed conflicts worldwide in 2025, double their share in 2021, according to a new United Nations report. More than 37,000 civilians were killed in conflicts last year, with at least 25 women and girls losing their lives every day, the UN Secretary-General’s 2026 report on Women, Peace and Security said. The report, released on October 26, also found that approximately 750 million women and girls now live within 50 km of an active conflict, 40 million more than in 2024 and the highest number since 1990. “More women and girls are trapped in wars than at any point in decades,” said UN Women Executive Director Sima Bahous. She warned that military spending continued to rise while development assistance declined, despite the growing need for investment in conflict prevention and peacebuilding. The report found that cases of conflict-related sexual violence verified by the UN nearly quadrupled between 2022 and 2025. Around 170 million women and girls live in both conflict-affected areas and extreme poverty, surviving on less than $3 (Rs 285.47) a day. They account for almost 40 per cent of all women and girls living in extreme poverty globally...

ipsnews.netThe World Is Watching Norway. Will the Country Protect Antarctica?Opinion The World Is Watching Norway. Will the Country Protect Antarctica? OSLO, Norway, Oct 28 2026 (IPS) - A global boycott of Antarctic krill products is gathering support. As a Norwegian, I want my country – the world’s largest krill-fishing nation – to change course when it comes to protecting Antarctica. Scientists, explorers and ocean advocates are urging consumers to stop buying supplements and pet food containing Antarctic krill and to avoid farmed fish raised on feed containing it. This follows earlier moves by retailers – from Holland & Barrett in Britain to dm-drogerie markt in Germany and supermarket giants Woolworths and Coles in Australia – to remove krill supplements from their shelves. I hope my government is listening. This boycott is highlighting a little-known industry and putting pressure on governments that support it. From 19 October, the 27 members of CCAMLR – the international commission responsible for conserving Antarctic marine life – will gather in Hobart, Australia, to negotiate fishing rules and marine protection for the last pristine place on our planet. Norway’s choices will matter far beyond our borders. In 1994, I skied alone to the South Pole, as the first woman to do so solo and unsupported...

indianexpress.comClimate change worsening heat stress and disease risks in India: Lancet reportThe 10th annual Lancet Countdown report, led by University College London (UCL) in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO), draws on the work of 146 researchers from more than 100 institutions across over 30 countries. It tracks 54 indicators of climate change’s impact on health. Globally, heat was linked to an estimated 540,800 deaths annually between 2016 and 2023, with 68% attributed to climate change. In 2023 alone, heat was associated with an estimated 710,000 deaths worldwide. Heat-related reductions in labour capacity cost the global economy an estimated US$1.07 trillion in potential income in 2025. While clean energy investment and health-system preparedness have improved, the report warns that progress remains insufficient. “A decade after the Paris Agreement, our findings are unambiguous: the health harms of climate change are growing faster than the world’s response to them, and in many cases even accelerating,” Professor Marina Romanello, executive director of the Lancet Countdown at UCL, said. The India findings and takeaways are significant. Heat threatens health, sleep and livelihoods People in India experienced an average of 10.6 heatwave days annually during 2016–2025, of which 5.3 days, or 50%, were directly attributable to climate change. The effects extend beyond heatwaves. People were...

rte.ieClimate change should declared a 'global health emergency', experts sayClimate change should formally be declared a global health emergency, experts have warned after they found that impacts on human health are outpacing the action countries are taking. Health harms from climate change have grown faster in the decade since countries signed the international Paris Agreement in 2015 compared to the decade before, according to the Lancet Countdown on Health and Climate Change. Annual average heat-related deaths rose by nearly 36% globally after the Paris Agreement was introduced, its findings suggest. In 2023 alone, heat was linked to a record 710,000 deaths, with more than 70% of that toll attributable to human-caused climate change, the researchers found. More than 140 experts from more than 30 countries worked on the paper, led by University College London (UCL) and produced in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO). Published ahead of the start of UN climate summit Cop31 next month, the paper tracks 54 "indicators" that cover how health interacts with areas such as heat, air quality, climate suitability for infectious disease transmission, energy systems, adaptation, health research funding, legislative engagement, extreme weather events and climate-driven economic losses. According to the findings, extreme drought affected nearly 52% of the world's land for...
