Welcome to all the new people joining! 👋 I’m a public transportation engineer who thinks critically about what car-centric public spaces really mean for our cities, our pocketbooks, and our planet. I regularly share articles about transportation urbanism and stories from my local advocacy work.

A silver lining is that it is through this phenomenon that I helped my state DOT acquire its first skatepark. 🦺🛹🤘

There is a worldwide network of unauthorized skateparks built underneath highway overpasses because these urban spaces are so polluted and unpleasant that city governments tolerate unpermitted construction that displaces drug dealers and other criminal behavior.

It went well. We ended up with 30 kids (50 total with the adults).

Tomorrow is Nat’l Walk and Roll to School Day so I’m spending the evening laying out signs for the bike bus “stops” along the route.

Fire in the Sky. Had no business watching this as a 9 yr old. I stayed late to watch it at a friend’s house and had to ride my bike home in the dark.

Luke Kanies@luke.kanies.com

Fun fact: our roads are also too big, which encourages people to drive too fast, because fire departments demand to use the biggest trucks. The rest of the world survives just fine with smaller trucks. But no, not us. This is America. And that’s why people drive 40 down your street.

My bike is my favorite fashion accessory. This was a "surprise" dress 👗 gift from my husband and I brought it home for them to see it out in the wild.

Economics aside, 4-6 story midrises can make for some outstanding gentle density.

Oh The Urbanity!@ohtheurbanity.bsky.social

Spending time in France and Switzerland, it’s clear that the “missing middle” in North America isn’t townhouses and duplexes. It’s mid-rises. Especially mid-rise neighbourhoods. Our denser urban fabric (Montreal, Chicago, etc.) is still mostly 2-3 storeys, not 4-8 like is so common here.

Among many other things, even decent access to food is a neighborhood crime deterrent.

In the Netherlands, 84% of people have a supermarket, GP and primary school within five minutes of their front door. But new research by Argaleo for Provincie Noord-Brabant also shows that 2.8 million people still have at least one daily service further away. Read more (Dutch): buff.ly/qzCQ0GQ

We biked to hockey today almost entirely on all ages and abilities infrastructure. And then brought our bikes on the train back home because kiddo was tired after his games. This is what having good quality transportation options is all about!

1. Humbly observe where people in your community are struggling. 2. Ask "What's the next smallest thing we can do to address that struggle *right now*?" 3. Do that thing. Right now. 4. Repeat

No one likes unnecessary scaffolding. Thankfully, we have a plan — and John Wilson is here to help break it down.

Without my bike I’d be functionally disabled. With it I’m as mobile as ever So accusations that cycling is “ableist” really annoy me. And “Cyclists Dismount” signs are a literal pain Disabilities are unique to the individual, cycling’s not for everyone, but can be absolutely essential help to many

We don't need chain stores and car-oriented corporations dominating our cities. We need neighborhoods that are small, local, and personal. When we finally move past the era of car dependency, this is what the future of sustainability looks like.

Do YOU have an aging friend/relative who should stop driving? Tell them this story from San Francisco. Ask how they will feel if they kill an entire family. But don't tell them that even then, they'll be forgiven and be able to drive again. This verdict is obscene. www.ktvu.com/news/woman-a...
