Empty Movement

watched a really important episode of television today

Lolita, a film by erotic thriller director Adrian Lyne, premiered in September 1997, if you were in Europe. Episode 30 of Revolutionary Girl Utena came out in October 1997. It's unlikely one of these inspired the other. No. It's worse. This is the strength of a shared language of boundary violation.

I know exactly the stills from Revolutionary Girl Utena I would use with the uh... wealth of meme fuel... that is those images of Trump and Erika Kirk. But I don't have the heart to do that to Utena. Or Akio, for that matter.

Revolutionary Girl Utena, Episode 37, The One Who Will Revolutionize the World. Shot 269, Utena's choice to be the fool. Production sheets for one of the most emotionally dense moments in the entire series. Scans by Thanatos_26, processing by me! ohtori.nu/gallery/Seri...

@empty-movement.bsky.social seeing this artwork made me think that the kitsch-ness felt too similar to Pierre et Gilles 90’s work✨
