That was a wild ride! Everyone should read this

My day has involved a blanket and this - so far I have yelled out loud, laughed, screamed, cried and also completely forgot about my terrible cold

Cheery reminder that France - the world's most visited tourist destination - has had a tourist tax for decades, rates set by local authorities

Jonn Elledge@jonnelledge.bsky.social

some of the hysteria here seems to ignore the fact that this is *optional*? if it looks like it will damage local tourism, mayors can just... not do it! they can change their minds!

Going to shamelessly plug this one again, as I was quite pleased with the way it turned out

New podcast episode! 🇫🇷 What really happened in France on Saturday? 🇫🇷 Are we in for another 6 months of violent protests? 🇫🇷 Why does this all link to French debt? . . and, on a lighter note, the best 🇫🇷 food festivals (this is my favourite recent episode, goes from violence and looting to lemon art)

Absolutely batshit profile of the man arrested on suspicion of setting Limoges town hall on fire during Saturday's protests; 34, from Creuse, on a watchlist for violence at far left protests - his 70-year-old dad also recently convicted of violent protest. But sure, it's the immigrants . . .

I wrote about France's 'casseurs', about why they are neither protesters nor looters, and why the police seem unable to stop this violence, which only ever comes from relatively small groups (when compared to the hundreds of thousands who protest peacefully)

Sitting at home explaining new curfew rules, takes me back to 2020 . . . TLDR this is only in a handful of streets and has many, many exceptions. It exists only in order for authorities to say they are doing something

thelocal.frFrance announces curfew in Paris and ban on protestsFrance imposed a partial curfew and banned demonstrations in parts of Paris on Monday, police said, as the government sought to restore order after some of the worst street violence in years.

Notable that 2 of the countries going big on 🇫🇷 violence have - racist mobs trying to burn asylum seekers alive - militias kidnapping people off the street and taking them to concentration camps

Sans surprise, les images de violence en France sont à la une d'une partie de la presse internationale 👇 #17octobre

As Paris begins the clean-up it's important, I think, to note that protesting, vandalising/torching and looting are 3 different activities done, by and large, by different people

Protesters take part in peaceful marches on an issue they feel strongly about; casseurs (rioters) show up to smash and burn things; petty criminals take advantage of the disorder to loot shops

Don't be like Louis Bielle-Biarrey . . . if you're going to the UK and you have recently renewed your passport you need to get an entirely new ETA, even if the old one is still valid (obviously doesn't apply to people travelling on a UK or Irish passport)

The new electric Citroen 2CV is not going down well with many of the classic car enthusiasts, but I think it's quite cute

My local swimming pool is being torn down next week (because we've got a brand new pool from the Paris Olympics 🥳) so they're letting everyone graffiti the walls now. Kinda like signing your mates' shirts on the last day of term 🥲

thelocal.frPresidential election watch: French centre-left primary, antisemitism and a flour bombFrom the latest polls to party infighting, the primary of the not-so-united left, an antisemitism scandal and the fine political tradition of chucking flour, there's a lot to catch up on in the first ...

'But the election isn't until April next year', I hear you say, 'that's 7 months away, why launch this now?' Because not only is campaigning well underway but the election is already affecting almost every aspect of domestic politics, as well as politics where it really counts in 🇫🇷 - on the street.

On the 🇫🇷 Left it's all going very well . . . a planned 'primary of the united left' went ahead without the Greens, Communists or the hard left (LFI and various ex LFI). The winner, Raphaël Glucksmann of centre-left Place Publique, was enfariné (had flour chucked over him) within minutes of his win

Protests called in 🇫🇷 for Saturday over the cost of living, especially fuel prices. This is also the day the Gilet Jaunes are supposed to 'rise again'. (I suspect protesters will be more typical urban leftists but we'll see)

I'm afraid I laughed out loud at this book opening - the hottest day of the year in Paris and it's only 23C at 7pm? Oh guys, just you wait until 2026 . . . (Day of the Jackal)
