1/28 A propeller in a tube straight through the bow, pushing the front of the ship sideways. At a standstill the bow thruster is simple. Once the ship moves, the water around the hull fights it. How it works, where it came from, and why it fades with speed. #shiphandling

MiG-23 aerial victories Short🧵 I'm not someone who pays much attention to counting aerial kills. Firstly because I'm more interested in engineering & flight performance, secondly because counting kills means little without understanding the circumstances under which the kills occurred.

This is an incredibly researched & well written article about the growing need for relocation of several villages in rural Alaska & the many conflicts over how to do that & how to pay for it. I can not recommend it enough; just outstanding journalism.

the year is 2030 and i no longer consume anything that isn't personalized to me. every game, every book, every movie extends to the limits of my own imagination and no further. i haven't been surprised in five years. i cry softly, in bewilderment, if i see a word i don't know

maybe i'm old fashion but the coolest thing about video games is being taken to new worlds that i hadn't thought up and experiencing something exciting that the artists behind the game want to show me

This seems to be a total collapse of ethics review. There is a reason that experienced scientific and medical researchers review studies that involve human subjects. Another safety valve is usually the funding agency, which normally wouldn’t let this through. But, you know…RFK Jr.

This is a poor take that suggests Owen Jones doesn't know much about Russia in the 1990s, including Russia-US or wider Russia-West relations in the 1990s. By giving only one part of the story, he is repeating the Russian political elite's self-serving line that it was all the West's fault. Long 🧵

The West helped create Vladimir Putin. A senior Western diplomat warned in 1994 where capitalist 'shock therapy' would take Russia. They ignored him - and ended his diplomatic career.

Dear British Airways: This very public thread has shown your airline to be a primary example of some of the worst customer service in modern airline history. Diversions for medical emergencies happen, but everything after that is on you. You guys need to be shelling out refunds BIG time.

lol my flight got diverted because of a medical emergency and they landed us in reykjavik in the middle of the night and deplaned us and sent us through passport control and then the crew vanished and then british airways sent us links to book an overnight hotel room but for a hotel at heathrow

The Facial Expressions of Tethys by artist Julius von Bismarck. A suspended high-sea buoy that moves in real time. Sensors on a twin buoy out in the Atlantic Ocean send live satellite data to motors inside the museum. This makes the indoor buoy copy the exact, real-time movements of the ocean waves.

1/x A man is remembered for two contrasting legacies: heroically saving the US Declaration of Independence from flames, while his mismanagement of US lighthouses left the American coast shrouded in darkness and filled with shipwrecks. This is Stephen Pleasonton. A small 🧵 #maritimehistory

Having observed the performance of the Fieseler "Fi-156", France decided in the late 1930s to acquire an aircraft with similar characteristics. The "SFAN-11" was therefore a prototype observation aircraft from 1940, designed for short take-off and landing capabilities.

1/x In 1971, Boeing faced an existential crisis. A billboard emerged, declaring, "Will the last person leaving Seattle turn out the lights?" after the company laid off 63,000 employees. Boeing needed something other than airplanes? The Jetfoil was born. A small🧵 #maritimehistory

As both an academic and a writer, I am repelled by the "this looks like a long document. Would you like me to summarize it for you?" that seems to appear at the top of every pdf viewer now. NO. The *entire point* of good writing (either books or journal papers) is that every sentence has a purpose.

I can easily imagine future historians trying to make sense of our age and coming up with elaborate and wild theories, and endlessly fighting over them in mountains of books — because the implausible truth is that it makes no sense at all.

Nathan Cofnas and the US Ambassador to Belgium say that the University of Ghent have now lifted his suspension, thanking the US government for supporting him (with threats of retaliation). The Ambassador says that Cofnas will be able to complete his one year appointment to March 2027.
