Games are made by people and game studios are made of people but game studios are also made of institutional knowledge, continuity, practices, standards, technology, resources, and IP. And those things do mean something, and it is a loss when they're discarded.

I do kind of wonder though. When I was the age gen z is now, I do not recall thinking about or discussing gen x at all, ever. The heightened, grating generation discourse felt like a new thing invented to sell us things (or to sell narratives about us), primarily through social media.

I love videogames. As an entire medium. Sometimes a game can be a Commercial Product for Games Machine, made of Light And Sound that Generates Dopamine. And sometimes it can be an anomalous web-page, and a spiralling tangle of genres and styles that makes you feel complex, messy feelings.

I just don’t believe video games as a medium are done forever, even if it looks bleak right now. I don’t know what that will look like, and right now I don’t entirely care—I mostly just want everyone to land on their feet as much as they’re able.

There is no legitimate reason, none whatsoever, that in an industry as wealthy and powerful as ours that a single dev should ever have to worry about their livelihood, their job security, their health insurance, their crediting, their career longevity, their retirement contributions-

Is there a word to describe the feeling when faced with projects made by friends & peers - that you were very much excited about - but now stand as monuments to their years of labour, from which some soulless ghouls extort millions of $$$ while casually discarding said peers' entire livelihoods?

Also important: being "in the game industry" can also mean plugging away at your personal projects while you get your money elsewhere. You're not any less of a dev if your work is "just" a hobby or a thing you do on the side.

And what's hilarious is that Game Companies ™️ are still requiring folks to move to work at their studio. Lol absolutely not. No no no. Don't do it. Not worth it.

For an industry that claims it wants new stories with new protagonists, new IPs with character, and stories that haven't been done before. There is virtually no long-term support for the studios that take the risk of creating these games. It's not sustainable.
