Just saw this amazing image of Tetsuya Chiba holding omnibus 4 of Kodansha USA's English release of Ashita no Joe. I can't help but see his face & imagine he's thinking "Took you Americans THIS long to finally release my manga in English, huh? Well, better late than never." RIP

😥 Rest in peace to an absolute MASTER of manga art. It's been such a special pleasure to work with Chiba's art on Ashita no Joe... to be able to examine his linework, tones, angles, & visual "mood" up close & in great detail. His art is truly beautiful & has a real depth. A real inspiration.

When I bought studio monitors, an audio interface, and some cables from Sweetwater a couple years back, I was surprised to receive a phone call from a real human after each order, checking to see if I was satisfied...

But anyway, sorry salesperson, I definitely don't have the money right now, but I can dream of drums! 🥁 (Normally, my browsing a site leading to contact from a salesperson would vaguely creep me out. But in this artificial era, since it was from an actual human, I find it a bit endearing.)

It's too bad that my dear friend Tom moved out of Chicago (though he moved to Hawaii, which is pretty sweet!) since I used to see their headquarters en route if I took a more leisurely non-80/90-turnpike route to see him, and I'd been wanting to visit their giant store. Maybe someday!

Last night I was fantasizing about buying drums (I used to have a big TAMA set when I was young), so I was adding various acoustic & digital drum kits - that I can't afford - to my wish list, & today I got a voicemail from a Sweetwater salesman. They're definitely on top of trying to make that sale!

My heart is heavy. Walter Koenig, our Ensign Pavel Chekov, passed away early today. Walter and I met on the bridge of the Enterprise in the 1960s, and we stayed friends for nearly six decades. When Brad and I married in 2008, Walter stood beside us as our best man.

The internet would improve by 95% overnight if the possibility to monetize via ads or engagement was banned worldwide. You don't need to regulate content when the monetary incentive to create incendiary content is gone.

It's really important to pay attention to the fact that Lula beat the fascist candidate not by compromising and trying to meet fascist voters in the middle, but by sticking to his guns, promising prosecutions for election interference, and mobilising his own voters to turn out in greater numbers.

I'm trying not to push my own opinions on my young son *too* much yet, but I'm absolutely a hardliner about AI & screen time. I've told him that if he grows up relying on AI, he's not going to learn how to problem-solve. How to THINK. Wild that this idea feels almost out-of-step with today's world.

AOC: "As AI begins to encroach in our society, their goal is to take your cognition away from you. AI's goal is to take your thoughts away from you, your ability to think away from you, so that you become dependent on a machine ... reading books is active resistance"

If someday, years from now, he's the only young adult in his town that actually knows how to think critically, surrounded by a sea of unquestioning troglodytes, he has daddy and mommy to thank 😎 (and himself of course! He's a smart kid who loves to learn.)

One of the most dangerous people in the world now owns a huge chunk of CBS News and CNN...not to mention all of the other Skydance media companies. Don't forget that Musk is also the largest single donor to Trump's Republican party. Oligarchs should not have this much control of our media.

A long time ago I convinced myself that I wasn't into cottage cheese, and then this past year, I've fallen in love with it. I guess the thing is that I'd never tried it with pineapple, or any other fruit before. Holy heck was I missing out! It's divine. Can't get enough of it. 🍍

Also, peanut butter & banana sandwiches. I'd heard of them, & love those ingredients separately, but I don't think I'd tried them together until recently. TOO DELICIOUS. Side note: I've loved peanut butter & pickle sandwiches my whole life. I know it sounds bizarre to most people, but it's amazing.

Sometimes I think that if modern social media existed when I was in my teens/20s, I might have flourished on it (or had a breakdown.) I see so many artists on here posting stylish, pretty manga-style ladies, & that's like 80% of what I drew from my mid-teens to mid-20s. (Kinda miss it, actually!)

I also got envelope-art-of-the-month from (I think?) Game Players magazine for some Super Metroid fan art I sent in. I was supposed to tell them if I had a Super Nintendo or Genesis, so I could claim my free game, but I forgot to include that - *d'oh!* (I had both!) They even mentioned it in print!

Thank you for joining me on "Oldtaku reminisces about the '90s"! (Honestly though, the '90s still don't feel *that* long ago to me, but gotta face reality! Entropy and all that...)

I'm pretty embarrassed by most of what I drew in my teens (raging hormones & whatnot) but I think the stuff from my early 20s still holds up. Don't wanna disparage teen me too much though. That kid had raging passion for art & drew a ton every day. Hundreds & hundreds of original comic pages / art.

Fun fact, there are like 8-10 issues of Animerica from the mid-90s with my art in the letters column. Almost all embarrassing to me now, but man did I take initiative back then! I also sent surveys back to AD Vision and Viz, decorated with art. I wonder if anyone kept them...?

Listening to music while I work helps me to focus - to a point. The problem is, it also inspires me to want to MAKE music. That desire has been 🔥overwhelming🔥 this past couple years. I sated it a little when I finished "Psychic Battle" back in January, but I have 6 or so more albums' worth of ideas.

But I also don't want to deaden myself again, now that I feel like I've "come back from the dead", after years of trying to push my real self back into the shadows & trying make myself give up on big dreams. I have my mom to thank/blame for that. Her death filled me with acute existential urgency.

Even right now as I work, I have an idea for a music video for one of my songs, but it would require rendering & motion capture (which I dunno how to do), a model (don't know any anymore), and getting the crew to go up to northern Michigan with me, to shoot at a place by Lake Huron that I love.

I love the feeling of creative ambition when I can act on it, but man I wish I could just put it on pause during the times when I really am overloaded with work. It's like trying to plug a leaking Hoover Dam with one's pinky. Can't hold it all in!

Some of the old extra-annoying side of this creativity is coming back, in terms of the big multimedia ideas that require beyond what I can do alone. Stuff that needs collaborators / gadgets / props / locations / wardrobe / makeup / hair. Stuff that needs a real budget. Stuff that needs TIME.

Back in my eight California years, I felt like I was in a place where I was surrounded by people I could have collaborated with, and while I certainly did to an extent, I could never do the really BIG ideas I wanted to do. Had to work my ass off all the time. Feels even less possible now.

It is harder and harder all the time to put these desires away. The more it seems like my life is speeding by, and remembering that death could come anytime, for anyone, induces in me a frantic need to make things. A damn-near psychotic level of creative urge.

Art demands a blood price out of you- time, energy, focus, a piece of the inner self you hide, if needs a piece of your flesh to live. Ai generation tries to skip that

(Wish it was possible to fix my several typos in the ALT text. “Walking”, not “Waking”, “Why do these paths seem…”, not “If by do these paths seem…”, etc)

Can you imagine how respectful and polite all the rap battles and diss tracks would be if everyone just got a decent amount of shut-eye every night?
