The inaugural Energy Innovation Leadership Forum featured illuminating discussions on where U.S. energy innovation is headed and how we can ensure financial and policy support for groundbreaking energy solutions. Explore our work: efifoundation.org

While the money does not technically expire, Congress can repurpose it for different programs within DOE or, in certain cases, rescind it. This figure highlights the funds that have been repurposed through FY26 appropriations, showing what Congress prioritizes.

Both Fervo and X-energy went public earlier this year in major milestones for next-generation geothermal and advanced nuclear. This Energy Innovation Project analysis explores how DOE investment supported these companies.

Last week, the EFI Foundation hosted 18 congressional staffers for a tour of energy infrastructure in the Midwest. The group visited energy and agricultural sites in MN and SD. The trip demonstrated how federal policy translates to investment and operational decisions.

@ernestmoniz.bsky.social recently joined Tavis Smiley to discuss Trump administration cuts to public research. “When you start taking this kind of political approach to determining what's getting funded, you have no idea what major innovations you are handicapping.” Listen here -

The Trump DOE inherited billions for energy innovation, largely from unspent Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and Inflation Reduction Act funds. After a down 2025, the first few months of 2026 show effort to move more money into the private sector.

efifoundation.orgIs DOE Open for Business? - EFI FoundationIn 2026, it seems DOE is changing course. The first few months of the year show a clear shift in the Trump administration’s science and energy innovation strategy.

Ledger-based carbon accounting can provide credible, comparable measures of product carbon intensity. EFIF's case studies apply our carbon accounting framework to steel production, tracking every carbon stock and flow across the supply chain with precision. Read below -

Since January 2025, DOE has lost roughly 3,000 federal staff and department headcounts are still declining today. Our recent collaboration with @scientistsorg.bsky.social examines what this ongoing loss means in practice. Read here -

Moniz advocated “going big” in negotiations to find regional solutions capable of “addressing the issues of Iran, the Emirates, the Saudis, Qataris, Kuwaitis, et cetera.”

Unlike in 2015, the Iranian Revolutionary Guards now control negotiations. Their influence over regional energy infrastructure and the Strait of Hormuz has made negotiations much more difficult.

In addition, Iran’s nuclear program has advanced rapidly since 2018. The country has accumulated about 10 tons of enriched uranium, half a ton of which is directly usable in a nuclear bomb.

💡Today, concrete production accounts for 8% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Low-carbon solutions are available but require scaling. Public and private procurement is the key to scaling low-carbon concrete adoption, as found in EFIF's recent report -

efifoundation.orgBuilding Demand for Low-Carbon Concrete - EFI FoundationThis report recommends a pragmatic, low-cost plan to reduce concrete’s carbon intensity by leveraging the market-forming power of demand-side policy.
