Finally, and great timing to keep it fresh on voters' minds.

This week’s main story is about how more and more white nationalists, antisemites, and Nazi sympathizers seem to be integrating into the Republican Party, how some of them are currently running for office, and how old you can be for JD Vance to consider you “a very young boy.”

Note that the CDC changed the rules to significantly raise the threshold this year - so it takes more cases to be designated as Mild, more cases to be severe. So it's actually worse then this - compared to maps of previous years.

And yet, silence from the FDA and CDC.

There is something really concerning (and disappointing) going on in the US right now. A dangerous and preventable situation. Let me explain. nextstrain.org/avian-flu/h5... 1/

Whereas on GrapheneOS, we have: - Graphene App Store - Accrescent - Obtainium (most flexible) - Aurora (anonymous fallback when all 3 above fails) With the exception of Aurora, Google doesn't play a damn role in what I decide to curate and install.

Remember, we also had root certificates compromised last week (with the Linux kernel root exploit). Sidenote: their password was 4. Not four as in "four letter." No, the CA Root certificate just had the number "4" as the password.

Filippo Valsorda@filippo.abyssdomain.expert

THIS IS NOT A DRILL. If you package/distribute/maintain root stores or chain verifiers, act immediately. If you know how to remove trust in a root, consider doing it now. Otherwise, prepare to update systems as patches/mitigations come. Go users, update to Go 1.27.3 or Go 1.26.10.

By my napkin math, total Bell Labs research expenditures from 1930-1980 were on the order of $50 billion in 2026 dollars. AI companies have spent ~$1 trillion so far: The equivalent of ~20 Bell Labs histories. In its history, Bell Labs researchers discovered the transistor, the solar cell, the laser

Funny thought experiment: Tech monopolies have spent about $1 trillion on AI development so far. How good of a chatbot could we have built for $1 trillion by just employing smart people to answer any question people might reasonably ask and collecting all the answers in a big lookup table?

RIP Tom. And also, wtf Ridley Scott?!

With Tom Skerritt's passing, the cast of Alien have so far died in the same order as the director's cut (where they find Dallas still alive waiting to become a cocoon): 1) John Hurt 2) Harry Dean Stanton 3) Ian Holm 4) Yaphet Kotto 5) Tom Skerritt It's macabre, sure, but it's also fascinating.

Still remember the MS specialist saying, "prepare yourself" because #MECFS signs and symptoms look so much like MS that even the MS expert was sure! "Nope; you have the wrong lesions... you may have a kind of 'pre-MS'," was her conclusion. 25% of MS diagnoses are misdiagnoses. How many are ME?

Nothing quite sums up the abhorrent violence inherent in the state (anywhere, everywhere in the world) than a video of the cops tear gassing an orchestra playing music at the Place de la Republique in France yesterday

However, I am now exploring MapQuest. Not as private, but it's in solidarity with protesting - and it has Traffic! It's new Flock/ALPR camera overlay is fantastic too. OrganicMaps' satellite imagery sign-up failed me over the weekend when I needed it in deep in a large park over the weekend.

Also found out what has been causing print failures on our 20yr old color laser printer - the RPi Zero V1.2 was pegged at 100% CPU processing the rasterization. Had this problem for years on big image prints. It's now been replaced with a RPi Zero V2.

As a side note, if you pickup a good robust color laser printer, like our HP CP4025dn, do NOT use the JetDirect NIC! It's full of exploits to the outdated HP firmware. Setup a Linux box (e.g. RPI Zero V2) instead. It also offloads rasterization from devices, and auto-configures all drivers.

Another big event was donating my only desktop to our daughter - who wanted to start playing Skyrim. Goodbye ASRock X399 Tachi Threadripper 2950X. Hello AM5 from Craigslist, at normal DDR5 prices (awesome deal). Rebuilt into a while theme chassis, we hated the KB though.

She ended up with the AM5 white build. The X399 sits in the closet. It could command a very pretty penny right now but with the way things are going in the US, I may want to hold onto it. I'm on my laptop only now.

There were a lot of tablet changes this year as well. Finally deprecated the iPad 3 and iPhone 8 "controllers" and resurrected the Surface 3 LTE with a new battery and thermal paste (no pics). I also restored the Lenovo Thinkpad Helix by installing a 1TB mSATA. Both running Bazzite Linux now.

I also cleaned out my homelab and put dozens of pieces of equipment up for sale. This has provided at least a dozen people to continue their own #RightToRepair by utilizing gray market parts to further their own homelabs and repairs.

Of note was my adventure into the latest Chromebooks to see if they would support native Linux (not the sub-linux). docs.mrchromebox.tech was fantastic. Unfortunately, the Asus I picked didn't have Audio nor Touchpad drivers in the latest 7.x kernel. That sucked, restore it, and sold off.

Usually I use my phone to snap pics of everything I mess with, but this past year I had to come to grips that Google dropped support for the Pixel 3a and GrapheneOS could no longer provide security updates. Also, the cracked screen (that I replaced twice) finally stopped working.

Switching to a new Pixel, Google has guarantees for 7+ years of security updates. I never even booted the phone - I immediately loaded GrapheneOS. ...and then I broke the screen. Lol. ...and so did my daughter. Lol x2. So the first noted repair of the year were two LCD replacements.
