This is insane. I don't know how it plays in practice given disengaged voters & all, but damn this fills me with fury for the 12yo girl betrayed by her mother... at least the rapist is dead.

This muthaf@cka here! @amyactonoh.bsky.social is running for governor. She is from the town next to mine. I know people who knew her growing up. Her childhood trauma is well known. What does Vivek do? Platform her abusive mother. It's repugnant and disgusting. 🤬🤬🤬

NGL: Mamdani ran as too much of a populist for me, but hearing this response (including correct use of words like purportedly -- especially notable in contrast to national politicians like Trump) would make me feel represented.

Patrick Chovanec@prchovanec.bsky.social

This is the danger of having "law enforcement agents" dressed in masks and second-hand tactical gear, with no ID. Who can tell them from criminals or terrorists?

If Trumpism isn't defeated at the polls, we'll probably wind up leaving this country. I'd like to fight for the US, but in addition to the personal risk from living under christofascism-- the idea that my government is doing this kind of stupid and self-defeating treachery is difficult to stomach.

Our (humans) powers of self-delusion are hard to understate -- so long as we're given acceptable lies. I have no sympathy for those who abdicated their civic responsibility and voted for Trump or abstained... ... OTOH there but for the grace of god go I. Consequences are often how we learn. :-(

Like I truly don’t understand how you could have been anywhere in the vicinity of Springfield Ohio even before the election and thought that he’d only go after “criminals.” Trump, Vance, and CO werent subtle in the slightest. I can only really conclude this was a lie the median voter told themselves

So Trump's hand-picked board agrees that he is unable to faithfully execute the laws -- i.e. he is unable to fulfill his oath of office.

Celeste Headlee@celesteheadlee.bsky.social

“The Board understands that w/o appropriate recognition it is unlikely Trump will provide the fundamental oversight of the renovation of the building & lead the fiscal rescue of the Center." Translation: Put Trump's name on the building or he'll withhold the $257 mill Congress set aside for repairs.

Unpopular opinion: Kavanaugh should be praised for his explanation of "Kavanaugh stops". They were always a fantasy disconnected from reality, but a concurrence laying out those details allows courts to determine when the decision obviously doesn't apply. ballsandstrikes.org/law-politics... IANAL

ballsandstrikes.orgBrett Kavanaugh’s Imaginary Immigration Stops Opinion Gets More Embarrassing Every DayThe fact that ICE officers do not allow wrongfully detained people to “promptly go free” is a surprise to only one man in America.

Influence operations are now easy to implement. I used to find social media helpful as a way to get exposed to other opinions But if those opinions are mostly propaganda ... it is impossible to emphasize enough: propaganda works, including on people who think it doesn't.

When I see people advocating for riots as a political strategy, I can't help but think of US history like this. (Riots have often been used by the reactionary right as an excuse to seize power or do things they wanted to do already -- such as massacres.)

Tthis take on the Democratic party matches my opinions: Somewhat more wishy-washy than I'd like, but Democrats have attempted to protect trans folks. [Reading about things in the UK (e.g. the Cass Review bullshit)... from afar it doesn't look good. I can't comment with confidence on it, but...]

Evan Urquhart@evanurquhart.bsky.social

This only works for people whose rights haven't been taken away by your preferred party. In the US, Democrats largely have NOT caved on trans rights, despite being more wishy washy than we might like. But UK labor has dismantled trans rights on par with Republicans in the US South.

This thread is generally about media coverage and engagement, and worth reading for that. This skeet matches my mental model around some activists. I think it would have been great if people tried to influence Biden's & Harris's policies -- but instead those folks worked to elect Trump.

Amanda Marcotte@amandamarcotte.bsky.social

Incidentally, this also explains why Gaza was a motivating issue under Biden, and protest energy has dried up almost completely. People felt they could influence Biden. They think Trump is beyond influence. They moved from a high-dominance to a low-dominance framework and lost energy.

Somehow this is logically consistent -- protestors against Biden/Harris *did* have more power to elect Trump than to force the US to fully adopt different policies. But if those folks cared about the things they said they care about, they'd have worked to elect Biden or Harris anyway.

Both outcomes would be humiliating to Trump if he were capable of feeling shame.

Carl Quintanilla@carlquintanilla.bsky.social

“.. There are now only two outcomes to the conflict: either the kind of wholesale destruction of Iran that Mr. Trump posited, or a settlement that will leave the government intact and empowered, and a blustering American president humiliated.” @nytopinion.nytimes.com www.nytimes.com/2026/05/04/o...

I read Haaretz for news on this topic, and there's plenty criticism of Israel that I agree with. But social media doesn't seem like a place where that kind of nuance is possible...

I was going to vote for Swalwell; not so much now. I'm on board with Becerra. He was good as AG, and he served in Biden's administration -- I'll be happy to vote for him. :-)

She wouldn't be my first choice, but I'd prefer AOC over (e.g.) Newsom. I like that she's taken pragmatic positions while still articulating recognizable values. (But I'm not a fan of the populist wing of the party, and it'd depend on how indebted to them she wound up being.)

jamelle@jamellebouie.net

from the perspective of someone who might want to be president, the best time to run for the white house is now, not later. so if AOC is thinking about it — if the white house is her ambition — then her best bet is to throw her hat in the ring

I don’t really know what I expect in posting this, but maybe some people see it and can learn from it. I’ll call it “lessons from an unwilling immigration attorney.” 1/

In hindsight -- outside the US, some powerful people are being held to account. My gut fear that no one would was myopic. I'd guess that the DOJ during Biden's term did the same calculus I did; and it seems to have been wrong. We should punish the guilty from the Epstein/Trump files.

Ed K@edk.bsky.social

I hate how powerful people were protected, but it's unclear to me that releasing the files like this will do anything to hold them accountable; and there's a risk of further harm to the victims. Still worth demanding now because of Trump, but this is likely why the files weren't released before.
