Last week’s Nobel for optogenetics is already giving some sight back. Retinitis pigmentosa kills the eye’s light-detecting cells but leaves the nerve cells behind them intact. Researchers injected nerve cells with a gene for a light-sensitive protein. buff.ly/AGkscua #ShareGoodNewsToo
I mean, you can't predict without also influencing outcome
Prediction is hard. Especially about the future. That Yogi Berra gem proves that you don't have to be a sf writer to get irritated with people insisting that you must know what's going to happen tomorrow, but (as a sf writer), I can tell you that this is one of our main occupational hazards.

This is what drives me crazy. Supporting labor and unions should not be analogous with inhibiting technological advancement!
It's important for folks to be very thoughtful and caring about job displacement and changes induced by automation. At the same time "all jobs must remain frozen in amber, exactly as they are today" is an absurd position that folks often implicitly wind up at

my nuclear-grade AI hot take that’s sure to get me cancelled until kingdom come is that refusing to use AI at all is rapidly becoming an extremely privileged lifestyle choice that feels social justice-y while actually being the complete opposite
being anti AI is a luxury belief only available to first world people, especially Americans imagine how important machine translation is for people whose first languages aren't that common

This just seems to be the best solution to reliance on closed models. And it also makes the comparison to what Aaron Swartz or other persecuted piraters did more clear—so when they invoked as a way to put down AI models we can say we don't want corporate control we want a training set commons
Pirate everything and make your own training sets from copyrighted material

This whole thing just makes me think of my middle of the road NJ suburban parents who watch Fox News everyday but they also obsessively watch Food Network and while they are not averse to eating at chains 100% understand places like Cheesecake Factory are tacky as hell
I think it's fine that Barack Obama made fun of The Cheesecake Factory but also you are kidding yourself if you don't think there are Americans who consider The Cheesecake Factory to be fancy, special occasion dining. Multiple things can be true.
Worth saying I don't 100% agree with him & I think he should know better. Workshops are not strictly an old idea and artists still make work this way or outsource their ideas to be fabricated by assistants. Part of my thinks he's being intentionally provocative as an art critic and historian

The youngest to be shot was 11 years old. ELEVEN YEARS OLD. In 2026, in the United States of America, the leading cause of death for children is a bullet. The victims and families are in my prayers. But they are also in my actions. We must end gun violence.

AI can produce slop (fucking stop it!). It can also be an accessibility tool for non-native speakers and neurodivergent people. If you reject everything AI touches without reckoning with that, you should know how privileged and exclusionary you come across.
r/opensource banning non-english speakers because "we can't tell the difference between ai slop and ai translation" is... uh... yeah. a choice.

I don't think it's a coincidence that the further down the privilege ladder you go from American middle class the attitude towards AI improves. A tech that lets a Zimbabwean teenager compete with a 40 something American suburbanite knowledge worker is going to test a lot of people's progressivism.

thinking fondly again of the college girl at the donut place, who made a little muslim boy bounce giddily out the door after she told him his donut was free, and who waved me away and said "you're good" when it was my turn to pay and then, when asked if there was a deal that day said "i hate my job"

I do hope I can maintain a reputation as the weird AI art guy
i like a lot of the weird AI art shit that @dylanschenker.com posts bc he finds artists who ask this question and/or use the tech as an artistic medium in ways that make sense as outgrowths from the trajectories of new media and conceptual art
