Congratulations to @deisseroth.bsky.social ! Optogenetics has transformed neuroscience. I'm also grateful for the open-source spirit Karl and colleagues championed by sharing optogenetic tools freely from the start. It made a huge difference for the field.

I am highly humbled to be this year recipient of the Pearl Meister Greengard Prize for outstanding women in biomedical research: its first awardee was my PhD advisor Nicole Le Douarin, an extraordinary scientist and mentor! Importantly, this award also recognizes the amazing scientists from my lab.

We are thrilled to announce that molecular biologist and neuroscientist Catherine Dulac of @harvardmcb.bsky.social is the 2026 winner of Rockefeller's Pearl Meister Greengard Prize! Register now for the award ceremony on Oct 20. #WomenInScience 🔗: https://bit.ly/3V2pZMA

Delighted to share our discoveries about one of the brain's neurotransmitter systems: www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6... Together with colleagues at the @alleninstitute.org, we have learned a lot about a tiny cluster of neurons in the brainstem locus coeruleus (LC) that releases norepinephrine (NE). 1

Well done @jieyusz.bsky.social and @mameister4.bsky.social!... 👏 I always joke that a key role for the cortex is to protect the most essential and way less studied brain areas below it 🤣😜

Well deserved! When I was searching for an example of how a discovery about the brain unlocked an entirely new class of therapies (while writing Elusive Cures), orexin is what I pointed to. It doesn't always happen this way. When it does **it's epic** and we should celebrate.

NIH's Aug 2026 proposal would scrap exact scores and percentiles for three broad bins (top = top 25%). With funding rates at 5% or lower, too much then rides on administrative discretion. It devalues peer review and is a deterrent to engage. Tell NIH before Oct 13. grants.nih.gov/grants/guide...

Finally out: a very cool study by @jenbussell.bsky.social from the Axel lab--summarized here by @thetransmitter.bsky.social-- on the urge to know in mice, even without any immediate benefit for the animal

The Transmitter @thetransmitter.bsky.social

“All men by nature desire to know” is the first line of Aristotle’s seminal work “Metaphysics.” New findings show that this statement extends across the animal kingdom to mice, too. #neuroskyence By @sarahthau.bsky.social www.thetransmitter.org/behavior/wou...

Amazing first publication: cortical representation of social cooperation, congrats @herbertwu.bsky.social!

Herbert Wu@herbertwu.bsky.social

First study out! Using a new cooperative paradigm and multi-agent inverse RL, we show that mice spontaneously adopt leader/follower roles, and the prefrontal cortex encodes these role dynamics and an egocentric social value map of the partner’s position. (1/3) www.nature.com/articles/s41...

New preprint from our group (collaboration with @sueyeonchung.bsky.social) showing that discriminating odor components within a complex mixture is constrained by neural sensitivity rather than background interference - likely due to sparse representations at the front end.
