Alaska is my home. studier of microbes (when not "administrating" from the dark side); gardener (if you can call it that); lover of dogs; rider of bikes; hiker of hills. GenX tryna survive to retirement without needing a root canal. F*cks jar is empty

Late Friday night, Lt. Gov. Nancy Dahlstrom reversed course and said she will certify former Attorney General Treg Taylor as a candidate for governor — putting him back in Alaska’s final four. Read more on the decision from the Alaska Beacon:

If you're in Anchorage, I'd definitely start being cautious about viral risks. For some reason, #COVID19 in Anchorage wastewater has exploded to near-record levels in the past week. Unsure why this is happening, but it's concerning. It is 12x higher than any other US sewershed at present.

1/ Over the weekend, RFK Jr. was interviewed on CNN, and as I'm sure many of you have seen, he made a number of inaccurate statements. The conversation covered Covid-19, RSV, measles, vaccines, and autism. Let's fact-check some of the biggest claims.

The new rules would decimate scientific discovery in the US. Public comment ended July 13. This piece states nearly 500K comments came in. A huge response. Supposedly about 95%s were against the rule changes. We'll see what happens...

Two physicists won the Nobel Prize for the 2012 discovery of the so-called “God particle.” Under a new rule proposed by the Trump administration, American scientists might be forced to watch similar discoveries from the sidelines.

Public health messaging we need to hear: "We acknowledge that we were wrong about COVID not being airborne. We've learned from that. We no longer assume the same with new outbreaks and we employ the precautionary principle until we have clear evidence that airborne mitigations are not required."

I love a good road trip, but this is brutally out of touch: a Trump Cabinet member making a documentary about himself while regular families can’t afford road trips anymore, because Trump and his war put gas prices through the roof.

1/ Yesterday, it was announced that RFK Jr. is requiring placebo-controlled studies for new vaccines—potentially delaying this fall’s COVID shots as well as the approval of other vaccines. RFK Jr.’s repeated claims is that vaccines were “never tested against placebos” is simply not true 👇

The possibility that RFK Jr. is going to undermine herd immunity in the United States grows increasingly likely. This would mean that US will be responsible for starting numerous pandemics and potentially destroying the effectiveness of the entire globe’s vaccine arsenal. This is bioterrorism.

Do not normalize children dying from measles. Measles was previously eliminated in the US, thanks to vaccines. When children die from measles, it means that adults have catastrophically failed to protect them because they have rejected basic science.

I have had it up to here with people who complain that NIH-funded research hasn’t made enough progress or contributed enough. The generations of amazing scientists trained in US programs—who have gone on to work in government, academia, & industry alike—are a priceless return on investment.

2 days ago, there was an abrupt $11B cut to local/state #publichealth (PH) infrastructure. I don't think people realize what this means: -Want an updated system to check your immunizations instead of digging through docs? PH no longer able to carry out upgrades to immunization information systems

What people in every part of higher education need to understand is that Republicans now want to do to universities what they’ve tried to do to labor unions: erase them from the institutional landscape. The question is how much you want to collaborate in your own destruction.

The terrible CR Budget bill — written by right-wing House Republicans with no input from anybody but themselves — was passed tonight with the support of 10 Democrats.   An absolute failure of Democratic leadership. NOBODY in the Senate should have voted for this dangerous bill.

I think JD Vance read somewhere that having charm only requires smiling at the end of sentences. Unfortunately, no one has ever genuinely smiled at him, so he can only do his best approximation of a human smile. This is why he looks like he's grimacing through a painful poop every time he talks.
