Happy #LetterboxdFriday there have been some movies that really surprised me recently!! Films that I expected to be great were mid, and films that I expected to be trite were creative, fun, and engaging

I really tried to judge these #LastFourWatched on their own terms. A film that takes itself very seriously should execute that vision with substance and heft. But some movies are witty and subversive and fun! And I love that too!

Breaking News!!! After 3 years of patience and building trust, my Giant Day Gecko let me hold her for the first time today! We sat like this for a few minutes and then she calmly walked back onto her bamboo. I AM OVER THE MOON!! #reptile #pet #lizard #gecko

I know it might seem silly to those outside the hobby, but Giant Day Geckos are a very shy species with strong instincts to distrust humans. This is a big accomplishment and I am so proud of our bond :)

It’s always interesting to visit cities in California with FAR better public transit than I’ve ever experienced. All I hear from locals are complaints (not good faith critiques) and it kinda pisses me off.

Bringing this back to say that I visited LA this weekend and was SHOCKED how easily I was able to navigate their metro! It took me wherever!! For cheap!! LAX, my hotel in Arcadia, a concert in Pasadena, meeting my friend in Santa Monica… never more than a 10 minute walk!

This is excellent news! One real issue we face in environmentalism is “shifting baseline” blindness where every new generation accepts a more barren world as “normal” with no knowledge of past biodiversity already lost.

There’s no such thing as “counter-gerrymandering” it’s the same thing!!! Less democracy is still bad when your party does it… which should be obvious for people always complaining about structural barriers to 3rd parties!

It really feels like they just want to whine about it so they can justify driving everywhere in their stupid SUVs. The SECOND I push back on their negativity I’m dismiss bc I’m not a local. I would KILL to have San Diego’s transit system in my city!

I would say that the biggest improvement to my daily life in the past few years has come from carrying a purse. Got one for a trip to Europe last summer and I’ve never looked back. 10/10 would recommend for any gender

Congestion pricing in NYC has been a policy miracle. It has dramatically reduced air and noise pollution, saved drivers time money and New Yorker *lives.* There has been a ~50% reduction in injury crashes in the congestion relief zone. Pricing driving delivers better transportation for *everyone.*

Congestion pricing was designed to finance more than $15 billion in critical transit upgrades in New York City. Those investments will take years. But the parallel changes at street level are already apparent. Here’s what we know so far. nyti.ms/4mbuGg0

Higher education is under attack politically in the US. But it is also being pummeled by growing illiteracy rates among students. As a professor, that is a truly exhausting combination.

They are smart, AND they truly struggle to read and write. Not even mentioning science literacy, civic literacy, etc. It is dire, and requires so much extra effort for instructors.

My latest Forbes article is all about SUVs. Specifically, it delves into two new research papers - one from traffic engineering, and one from public health - that shows how these increasingly-popular (and increasingly large) vehicles come with major downsides 🧪 www.forbes.com/sites/laurie...
