This piece was for my daughter, and she picked the colours. Then some idiot (me) suggested that it would look better with the balls having the opposite colours to the cages.

Probably the most stressful and satisfying whittle of my life 🙂 I think this is as far as I can take the concept for now.

Game idea: a short puzzle game where I carve all the assets from wood and use them for stop motion animation. Pros: no one else has done it, it'd look so cool, I'd have a lot of fun making it. Cons: I would never finish it, or I'd go mad trying, or both.

The finish was tricky but fun! I put a sandwich bag into the middle, pushed the ball into it, added some finishing oil and sealed it up, then left the rest soaking in the stain.

A broken wooden spoon is a very handy source of raw material, but for a long time I had no idea what to do with the bowl. This, apparently 😅 the mushrooms are made from the last piece of the handle.

I haven't decided on a finish yet, but I'm leaning towards just a gentle sanding and a coat of wax.

It's already been a long week and it's only Wednesday 😑 so I'm making mushrooms. Just gotta carve it out sometimes with an easy design. Did you know there are blue mushrooms? They don't look like this but they're really cool!

There's something very satisfying about making tiny swords. They look so fierce but I have to carve them so delicately to avoid breaking them. This might be a metaphor for something. Also, a few more and I could make my own version of the album cover for The Mountain Goats "Getting Into Knives".

A fidget toy from before fidget toys were a thing! Easier than you'd think to make, but they do require a lot of patience and care (I have inhaled vastly too much sawdust from carefully smoothing and shaping it)

An idea occurs: LLMs are pyramids. Both are impressive because of their scale. Both are relatively simple concepts that were created by throwing unimaginable resources at them. Both purport to solve a problem in their society that isn't real. We shouldn't make more of either given the human cost.

I learned today that the pyramids weren't built by slaves, so that last one only kind of works. Don't think it'd be a good idea to pull a large chunk the Egyptian workforce away to build a giant tomb for the president though and definitely not under the safety standards of the time, so it can stay.

I fucking love people who become more themselves with age. Stranger taste. Clearer boundaries. Louder laugh. Less interest in impressing random people. Watching somebody slowly stop auditioning for the world is fucking beautiful.

I like this. Let's get him to do more! Soldiers? SUPER WAR FIGHTERS Computers? MEGA DATATRONS Police? ULTIMATE CITY BATTLE MEN How many days to the midterms again?

United States President Donald Trump issues executive order instructing federal government agencies to "use the terms 'Super Intelligence' and 'SI' in place of 'Artificial Intelligence' and 'AI' and will not acknowledge the usage of 'Artificial Intelligence' and 'AI' in any applicable setting."

I have so many questions and no answers. If you are feeding live giant centipedes to your cat, please stop.

This guy just didn't come out right. I had a feeling from the beginning but I'm not sure if my instincts were telling me something or if I was predisposed to make him mediocre as a result. Anyway, I made a fun lil dude and tried out carving a new pose. Not a bad result! #persistencenotperfection

Life hack: every few years or so, memorise the winning lottery numbers for a given week, just in case you turn out to be the protagonist of a time travel story at some point.

Commonly known as a "Baby Yaga", this is the juvenile stage of an izbushka. While they can grow large enough to support a house like in the famous legend, it can take decades for them so do so.

I've only been doing nice carvings recently, which is fine and all but sometimes I get a craving to make something awful. To that end, please welcome Eyeball Jeff.

The Anthropic docs refer to someone using Claude as "a human coworker". So I guess when I'm making breakfast, the stove and the toaster are my mechanical coworkers?

Eventually he went to a disastrous audition where he tried to do a happy dance and broke the set, two cameras and an entire lighting array.

Things were rough for a while but after Pingu had a cocaine fuelled breakdown during his stint as a horror director, he was able to patch things up with his cousin in rehab and now both Pingu and Big Pingus are doing a lot better.

Growing up, Big Pingus was always in the shadow of his more famous cousin, Pingu. No matter how many weightlifting trophies he brought home or how many hotdog eating contests he won, his parents were always asking why he didn't go into children's TV like his cousin.

I'm thinking of pivoting to selling "make your own" antique kits. Just take whatever random item I sent out of the box, wait 80 years and tah-day! Instant antique!

Never mind, just had a time swordfight with my daughter. Clearly this is what they're for!

Tiny knives, along with the knife used to carve them! If you have some long, thin wood and can avoid snapping them, these are a really fun five-minute whittle. Dunno what to do with them now though. Maybe I'll just give them out for free at craft fairs.

And we're done! I know it's only September and much too early for Christmas, but who am I to argue with a client? The drybrushing on the snowflake turned out unexpectedly nice, but the camera struggles with it a bit. Please enjoy the extra picture hinting at just how messy my desk is.

If you're very lucky, you can sometimes catch a glimpse of a gnome overlord. Despite their name, these gnomes are very peaceful and are most often seen apologising for something they knocked over or broke (tomte spaces are much too small for them).

Surprisingly nothing, because while I'm playing RimWorld again, my colony is founded on peace, love and free medical care for any raiders who survive the gauntlet of horrible traps.

I'd almost forgotten about this lil' guy, but the person who ordered him just placed another order for a tomte that's twice the size. This should be interesting!
