Enjoying Mike Flanagan's adaptation of @stephenking's Carrie. My sixteen year old was noting that, since it was set in the present day, it should have been called Carreigh 🤌

Perhaps the most breathtakingly cynical part of the settlement is this: Meta has agreed that the nighttime feed blackout will expand from midnight–6 AM to 10 PM–7 AM — but only if major competitors including Snapchat, TikTok, and YouTube agree to comparable protections.

I would not rely on your teen's willpower to keep them from using their cell phones at night. You need to have custody of the phones. How good are you at not picking up your phone when it's in your pocket? Honestly, I struggle with it. Your teenagers may struggle even more.

And there is evidence supporting this approach: bedroom access to phones and other portable media devices is associated with shorter sleep, poorer sleep quality, and greater daytime sleepiness.

Although I think this is a step in the right direction, I really would not recommend that parents or teens rely on the goodwill of tech companies and their oligarch owners to keep them safe or help them sleep well.

Teenagers need a sleep opportunity that allows for the recommended 8–10 hours of sleep per night. If the blackout is only midnight–6 AM, that allows only six hours of sleep.

Two changes are specifically relevant to sleep health. The first is a nighttime block restricting access to feeds between midnight and 6 AM. The second is turning off notifications between 10 PM and 7 AM.

You can't fix a summer sleep schedule the night before school starts. I can't tell you how often I see teens in July and August who are sleeping until noon — and who are going to have to be up six hours earlier in a few weeks. #backtoschool

Now the same trip (with all the different layers of fast passes etc) would be practically out of reach. Which is fine for us but makes me sad for parents of young kids who are not wealthy.

This is happening everywhere for lots of things that our parents (me- Gen X; parents on Silent Generation /Boomer cusp) took for granted. What I especially like is the focus on solutions— finding new non corporate ways to find and share joy for everyone.

I cannot believe how far people will go to avoid medical intervention: one of the founders of the “free birth” movement lost her baby and still continues to peddle lies (and a $399 course on how to give birth at home without medical intervention)

Took my dog for a long hike and spent the whole thing chatting with an AI about which mattress to buy. Came home with a great spreadsheet and a ruined walk. New essay on the urge to research everything — and what helps me stop. drcraigcanapari.com/how-not-to-r...

John Roberts and Sam Alito really took the last tiny brake off this runaway train yesterday, and all of the worst people are not only running with it, but — importantly — also taking it as a sign that, yet again, they can and should go even further.

I’ve been trying watching UConn basketball and still remember them losing to Duke with a buzzer beater by Laettner in 1990. This win felt like sweet revenge. Got a FaceTime immediately afterwards from my two best friends from high school. We’ve been enjoying college hoops from afar since then.
